CNC Bit Change Tips and Tricks (CNC-IN-3)
These simple tips will help ensure that your bit changes go smoothly and you get the maximum lifespan out of your bits. While it’s not the most complicated process, I find that even experienced CNC users could use a few tips to help them improve their bit changes.
This video is part of the “CNC-IN-3” series that strives to bring you simple and concise content about the process of integrating a CNC into your workflow. Follow along for more helpful videos!
Big thanks to @shopbottools for helping this idea become a reality. ShopBot has been making incredible CNC solutions right here in the United States for 26 years! I’m running their Desktop Max machine in my workshop and that’s what you see in this video. For more information on ShopBot check out their website at www.shopbottools.com
Also I’d like to thank @bitsbitscompanyinc.8517 for supplying the bits used in this video. Bits & Bits uses a proprietary process called “Astra Coating” to increase the lifespan of their bits and ensure that every cut is a clean cut regardless of the CNC you’re running in your shop. Whether you’re looking for spiral bits, V-Bits, or bits for cutting nonferrous metals Bits & Bits has you covered! They also carry Festool Tools, Router accessories and sawblades on their website www.bits it’s.com
If accessories are what you’re after check out @PwnCNC at www.pwncnc.com I’m not sponsored by nor do I get any kickback from these guys but they make some awesome accessories!
If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the Bits & Bits or ShopBot websites consider checking out my Amazon Affiliate Storefront. I have Skill’s table saw, and I love it. Skill really did a great job on that saw, but the reviews I’ve seen on the router table have been so so. The main gripe is that the left side of the fence isn’t stable. As of 2024, they’ve done away with the top router adjustment, from what I’ve read.

    Perfect for small projects. Not got a lot of power so if the wood starts to flex it stops the saw pretty easy. Use it for small tasks and you will be happy. Safety system Works great czcams.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c .lose your grip on the saw it shuts off and the sheath closes over exposed saw.

    I have many older style craftsman router tables and routers, bought this table and router combo to have a new option in the shop and the height adjustment, went together in 8 minutes I think. What was the solution you came up with for the dust collection from 2 points and that port on the router faces forward instead of towards the rear of the table?

    That was an excellent explanation, thanks! I've watched a few explanations of this concept but none that explained it quite as well. Way to Go! Just to clarify, from a newbie -- if the nail head direction is parallel to the bottom piece (and also parallel to the wood grain in your example piece of bottom wood), you have a greater chance of shining because the nail can be deflected from the wood grain. However if you nail perpendicular to the bottom piece and thus the wood grain, the nail will likely straddle the wood grain rather than be deflected? So then if the grain of the bottom piece is perpendicular to the orientation of the wood piece itself (i.e. in your setup, the wood grain of your bottom piece is rotated 90 degrees - I forget what type of cut that would be called - would it change how the nail gun should be oriented? Is the orientation of the gun dependent on the orientation of the whole bottom piece or just it's grain? I realize it's been awhile since you posted this, so an answer from anyone else would be appreciated. I'm a newbie and want to get it right! :) Thanks all! - Fawn

    I’m new to all this so I apologize in advance but how far out can the fence be pushed? I believe you mentioned it can get up to 1/4 inch from the bit, but how far from the bit would it go? The reason I ask is because I’m making a fairly large template and I think I need about 8 inches of room on one side. Thank you.

    Does the dust collector suck heated air from the shop to the cold attic? I live in a cold state and hate to suck my heated air out of my shop. Any ideas?

    • @ButlerBuiltWoodworking
      @ButlerBuiltWoodworking Před rokem

      I can’t deny it certainly does pull warm air out of the shop pretty quickly! That being said though I recently insulted the attic/ceiling joists above the drywall and the benefits were two fold: 1.) the shop space takes much less heat to warm up and therefore unless I am running a very long carve or other operation on any other tools connected to the DC I have experienced a much less significant temp swing and the recovery time has been cut in at least half! And 2.) The added sound dampening is AMAZING! 😍 it’s honestly kinda eerie sucking up dust and cleaning the shop when you literally can’t even hear the dust collected turn on let alone hear the droning sound of the motor as it runs 😂 It gets chilly here in Boise, ID but I wouldn’t necessarily consider it to be a harsh winter climate (we’ll have 7-10 days in the teens to 20’s freedomheight but generally speaking we’re more frequently closer to 40 degrees so once the shop warms up and I get the 8” cement block walls warm the chill has a hard time setting back in with any significance or speed

    • @ButlerBuiltWoodworking
      @ButlerBuiltWoodworking Před rokem

      Doh! Hit send a bit prematurely there 😂🤦🏻‍♂️😆 I meant to close that comment with a final thought and that is that if you have a small shop (as you can see mine is a one car garage measuring 15x20’ with just a 7’ high ceiling space is so precious that in my mind losing some heat temporarily every once in a while is an incredibly small price to pay! I would say I’m more concerned with losing cool air in the summer than heat but we’ll top out at 110 degrees of dry heat in the summer and we’ll go 3-4 months per year where the only forecast you need to see is the first warm dry day of the year and you can be sure the next 90-100 days will be between 90 and 115 degrees with barely a cloud in sight and rain showers being rarer than my hand cut dovetails fitting together cleanly 😂 The attic may not be the “ideal” place to put it but I’d have mine outside the shop regardless of the size of the shop from now on and I believe you’d have the same issues mentioned above regardless of whether you stuck it in the attic or beside the shop outside the walls.

    Looks a bt complicated but a potential workable solution for an issue I am about to encounter. I am looking at getting a MacBook Pro mostly for video editing - my windows computer continues to bog down with video editing. My only frustration is that Vectric doesn't work on Macs - this may be a solution. I am also looking at Parallels but have heard that can be an issue. I would think that zeroing to machine would be much more advantageous given that this never moves. Everything else is known ie material thickness spoil board thickness and tool length. So using and offset with those known thickness would be easier. I’m new to cnc so maybe I’m not understanding why the other method is used more. Great video.
