These terrified me as a child when we lived in NW Arlington, VA in the early 1960's on Saturday tests...And you have TWO of them running in your garage!! Totally awesome! Now to run both of them in the garage with each of their roots blowers running full power...keep the garage door closed of course!
Yeah. That's what the 1003 was originally designed for. Hi-Lo for fire calls alert and attack for civil defense use. That's cool that they still use the hi-lo for fire calls!
@SuperUTBER You can't tell how loud it is from the video. Yes I probably should be wearing protectors but both of these sirens running together aren't as loud as an average rock concert. With them both running like this it's not even loud outside the garage. There is very little air moving through the choppers when running them like this. Notice on my videos where I have any air going through the choppers at all I'm wearing hearing protectors.
@TheFiremansavage I don't have the Ark horn rotator mounted to anything so I can run the rotator. I just got the chopper and solenoids put together yesterday on the Ark 1003. I haven't had time to do anything else with it. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to drag all that outside anyway.
@thunderboltlover The blower the sherman horn rotator is on is from Dallas. The camera is sitting on the blower frame from Arkansas. The frame is sitting on it's end. You can see the blower box from Arkansas at 1:38 in the video. It's standing on end. The siren isn't from Little Rock. It's from some small town around Pine Bluff. I can't remember what town.
The chopper rotator mounted up on the blower is on permanent loan from the city of sherman. The blower it's mounted on was recovered from an old dallas fire station that was demolished. I got it from the demolition company. The 1003 I got from arkansas came from a guy who recovered it from a city lot it had been sitting in for about 10 years.
@rhett443 I should have said that both control panels are hooked up to 240. The Sherman 1003 chopper is running on 210 and the Arkansas 1003 chopper is running 170.
@SuperUshistory They have only had minimal work done on them. One was sold. I still have the one I got from sherman. The one with the horn mounted on the blower.
So the check valves on the blower determine on how much air goes into the chopper? And thats why the Sherman 1003 is higher-toned than the Arkansas one?
All over the place. It's my garge storage system. Those barrels hold, unbuilt model kits, christmas decorations, old toys, etc. etc. etc. etc. Only a few actually have the original contents.
i see. i live in a town that has 1 still working thunderbolt 1003 and ive been here for 2 months and ive heard it go off several times for fire calls. when they blast that siren they use the Hi-Lo setting. i think they also use that alert tone for tornado warnings
@MichaelJavert13 Well first of all I'm not - blowing civil defense sirens- I'm in a closed garage running only the choppers on the thunderbolts. It's not as loud as a 100 watt Marshall amp with a 4x12 cabinet would be if it was turned half way up. I only do this on weekdays when the neighbors are at work so I really doubt if any of them have ever heard me do it. The Model 5 i have run in my garage is full volume but again I only do it on weekdays when everyone is at work and it's sunny out.
i see i thought they were way louder than that because i live 3 blocks away from where one still active and in use 1003 sits. and on the wind down you can hear the low gutteral growl it makes when the horn turns and points my direction. and i can hear that growl clear as a bell from inside my house. and 125 db i know is enough to make your ears ring but not damage your eardrums even if you stuck your head into the horn while its runnin
An octave lower is wayyyyy more that "slightly" lower. If you play my garage test of the fire station 10 siren and then the full up run of the exact same chopper set on the exact same setting in the oak ridge test video you can see the difference between blower and no blower.
In the video title AND description I state "NO BLOWERS" Each one is drawing maybe 3 or 4 amp each with only the chopper motors running. IF I did want to run them with the blowers then I probably would have enough capacity because I have 200 amp service to my panel.
right. yea they do hi lo but (and i don't know if you know this so forgive me if you do) but the blower makes it loud and the solanoids ("bowtie" at the base of the horn) affect the hi lo sound. the 1000/T can't do the hi lo... a 3t22 has solanoids that are harder to see.
The blower forces a high volume of air at low pressure through the siren chopper (rotor) causing the high sound volume. I guess the air being forced through the chopper might change the pitch a little but not much. That's what the 2hp chopper motor is for. The pitch can be set on the thunderbolt by changing the voltage to the chopper motor. There's a transformer with several different voltage taps in the control cabinet that does that. The pitch can be changed by wiring to the pitch desired.
Greetings :) I'm planning to start a project for a collection of warning sirens around the world by asking permission & giving credits for the original respective owners when using their videos. May i get your permission ? :)
One was given to me by a guy in Arkansas and the other was loaned to me by the town of Sherman texas. I eventually paid them for it when it was returned to them and sold at auction. That siren has been put back in service in Upson county Georgia. The siren from Arkansas went to a family in west texas years ago.
@cweis127 He's not running these with the blowers on (if he was he'd blow his eardrums). The choppers on these 2 sirens are spinning at different speeds.
I think one of these would be great in a theatre pipe organ! Most Wurlitzers had several federal sirens in the pipe chambers in the fox theatre organs.
when i first moved here i was suprised to find that this town had 1 working thunderbolt siren still in use. most cities ive been too rarely have those anymore because they all replaced them with those crappy federal 2001s. whats the maximum decibel rating for the thunderbolt if you put the blower on full power?

@ArduinoAlan It uses solenoids to alternately close the high and low pitch sections of the chopper. I have another video up that shows how it works.
@rhett443 I should have said that both control panels are hooked up to 240. The Sherman 1003 chopper is running on 210 and the Arkansas 1003 chopper is running 170.
Cool thunderbolt 1003 sirens
hi eric do you remember me i emailed you about the mini tbolt and sweet vid ps my name is scott
@SuperUshistory They have only had minimal work done on them. One was sold. I still have the one I got from sherman. The one with the horn mounted on the blower.
I found a thunderbolt for sale for $2,000. It is a complete set including a single phase blower, all the control boxes etc. Is $2,000 a good buy?
sounds like my computers hard drive after i dropped it...
Does that happen to be an A1 Blower on the Sherman 1003?
I like the sound of the Sherman 1003 I don't know what you are talking about🤷♂️😕
Opinions..
Wow!!!!! That's insane
where did you get it?
@EstateManor Yeah. They already have the air supply there in the organ!!
One came from Arkansas one from Sherman. I say that in the first 14 seconds of the video.
Wow
So the check valves on the blower determine on how much air goes into the chopper? And thats why the Sherman 1003 is higher-toned than the Arkansas one?
@rhett443 No both are running on 240.
Wow those tbolts are big I never knew they were that big
how does it modulate the pitch?
One chopper level 7, and one chopper level 5?
Two Lita Kino's!
And these are one level 5 and one level 3
My Elemantary school had a Thunderbolt, but they got rid of it.
Are all Thunderbolts the same size?
Hopefully one day I’ll see the 1003 in Grafton MA
What does the blower do?
What was that white thing bin the siren
Where did you find those?
All over the place. It's my garge storage system. Those barrels hold, unbuilt model kits, christmas decorations, old toys, etc. etc. etc. etc. Only a few actually have the original contents.

I can see the switchy thingy moving on the siren.
Nice Vid!!!
What is your name that talked in the beginning of the video & who's the guy who turned on the siren may you please reply to my question
Same guy talking at the beginning that turns the sirens on.
those 1003's sound like they need there choppers cleaned
YOU HAVE TWO OF THEM!!!!!!!!!
Which one is high Pitch
Those sirens are gonna scare the tornados away
In the middle when there dual tone and line up its sounds like minecraft subwoofer lullaby
hey man are those things really heavy or are they sort of light????
@TheFiremansavage Not enough room and the ark 1003 isn't mounted to anything to allow the rotator to run with the horn attached.
Him *turns on siren*
*ppl outside*
Ppl: Wth is that sound we gotta run theres a fire
with blowers they litteraly sound like leaf blowers
LOL, they even have almost the same internals
@vanamonde2 Thanks. I thought you sold both of them based on the two thunderbolts on the civil defense museum website.
What the chopper level on Arkansas 1003
Yeah. Pretty much. There are some differences in the sizes of the rotator boxes but you could say they are all the same size.
0:53 that sound awemazing
I noticed your fallout shelter sign and the old rations of food supply
@MichaelJavert13 Well first of all I'm not - blowing civil defense sirens- I'm in a closed garage running only the choppers on the thunderbolts. Nice car alarm.
@Barricade360 I sold one and still have the one with the horn mounted up on the blower.
The HIGH hilo is cool and the low one too
i see i thought they were way louder than that because i live 3 blocks away from where one still active and in use 1003 sits. and on the wind down you can hear the low gutteral growl it makes when the horn turns and points my direction. and i can hear that growl clear as a bell from inside my house. and 125 db i know is enough to make your ears ring but not damage your eardrums even if you stuck your head into the horn while its runnin
Did you buy that?
really how did you survive 2 1003's?
An octave lower is wayyyyy more that "slightly" lower. If you play my garage test of the fire station 10 siren and then the full up run of the exact same chopper set on the exact same setting in the oak ridge test video you can see the difference between blower and no blower.
I thought Sirens were supposed to be stuck on the floor how did someone give it to you instead of taking it out of the floor
who means solenoids?
do the blowers on the 1003s effect how loud they get, or do they just effect the tone pitch?
They effect how loud the get. They supercharge the sound so it's really loud!
how do you have enough juice to run these both at same time! they draw 20-30 amps apiece!
In the video title AND description I state "NO BLOWERS" Each one is drawing maybe 3 or 4 amp each with only the chopper motors running. IF I did want to run them with the blowers then I probably would have enough capacity because I have 200 amp service to my panel.
@Barricade360 They were restored and sent to smaller cities to be their warning sirens
right. yea they do hi lo but (and i don't know if you know this so forgive me if you do) but the blower makes it loud and the solanoids ("bowtie" at the base of the horn) affect the hi lo sound. the 1000/T can't do the hi lo... a 3t22 has solanoids that are harder to see.

The Upper Right one is the Sherman 1003,
And the Lower Left is the Arkansas 1003
0:37 sherman starts
0:44 arkansas starts
This mah jam
That's solenoid not solanoid. If you will look at my other videos I have a demonstration of the 1003 solenoid valves operating.
@AcaAllertor127 Yeah that is weird. It's right before they get in sync.

125 db dual tone. 127 db single tone.
The first one has a 5/6 chopper,with no blower,you got yourself a 10/12 thunderbolt.
can these run on 110v or are they higher voltage
they are 220-240v. depends on what chopper sound you are going for.
! ObamaTookMyCat ! where dose one find one I am in California and would enjoy one of those 1003s
the choppers can run on 110 volts. That's the lowest voltage on the chopper transformer.
Every siren in the world should be a Thunderbolt .. it should be the universal law.
They look bigger up close than they do on a 90 foot poll
