  • Another day in a life of a Rope Access NDT Technician. This time working with an overhead obstruction. Many times we see rope access tutorial and training videos but I guess not many out there of the actual jobs. During training we usually do rope access maneuver indoors and with comfortable clothing. In the actual job site we do it outdoors exposed to the elements and wearing full PPE which is not exactly comfortable. And aside from the rope access part, we still have to do the actual job while on the ropes and it is harder than it looks. That is why I try to shoot as much of these rope access + NDT work in actual work site.

I love the point you make about training environment and the work environment. Coveralls, lifevests all make our moves cumbersome. However, the principles stay the same. There is a reason the length of cowstails is mentioned in the ICOP. And we should use devices according to manufacturers specs and evolve with new knowledge. If you want to showcase cool climbing, promote some best practices please. A shunt is a rope clamp and not a backup devices. It has been out of fashion for decade my friend. And keep those cowstails at the right length. For every thing else. I like the real life video's you have been putting out. It gives people a glimpse into what it is to work offshore in rope access.
    Stay safe out there 👊🏻👊🏻

Hi. Thanks for the comments. Agree with the shunt being not a backup device. I used the wrong term as my English vocabulary is limited. What I'm trying to say is with the shunt, the tech will at least be connected to a rope if the other connections fails. Sometimes there is limited choice of equipment in the job site and we have to work with what ever equipment is available. And that is another reality one may encounter in the actual RA work.

@@DIYPhil for some reason I only just now got a notification from your reply.
I understand what you are saying and there are some cultural differences and how subcontractors are treated in the world. If my client would provide me with improper gear, I would tell them so and do the job in such a way that we only use gear as intended by the manufacturer. If that means we cannot do the job then so be it. Not my problem. According to EU rules and regulations they should provide a safe workplace. Which they are not doing. You as the L3 supervisor are responsible on the site and when the shit hits the fan and an accident investigation gets to court you might be in trouble.
And like I said I know it can be very hard in some parts of the world to decline work and just say NO. I think such changes start with L3’s chucking this shunt overboard 😂.
      Have a good one👊🏼
