    Hello Cpt.
    Another beautiful and fascinating video. 😀👌
    An extremely complicated and very long taxi to Rwy 23L.
    But what fascinates me enormously is the extreme climb performance in the Airbus Open Climb Mode. 🛫
    I think the camera settings and the change with the cameras to the current values in the checklists during the taxi are great. Thanks.
    I'm looking forward to the next video!
    With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching and your helpful feedback! There is no general rule about who flies to the destination or the home base. On lots of days, we fly 4 legs. In that case, both pilots do one landing at the home base and one somewhere else. Before duty begins, we discuss and decide who is flying which leg. Some airports, like Funchal or Samos are restricted to Captains landing only. Also CAT2 or CAT3 approaches in fog have to be performed by the Captain.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem +2

      Thanks for watching. Good question: We were flying on a heading. And the flight plan in the MCDU was not yet sequenced. You see that in the video on the ND. It shows MCT7 as to-waypoint. This point was already behind us. So we entered direct ELNOD which was the next waypoint in our routing we would have reached when we would have continued on the heading. Because we were not cleared direct ELNOD, we just entered direct ELNOD and then pulled immediately the heading knob to get back in heading mode.

    Another great vid! At the end a good demo of one of the very few awkward ‘Airbusisms’, in my opinion - trying to clean up the flight plan and being unwillingly pulled out of HDG mode by the direct to function. Never been sure why that is a feature.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching and the feedback! If you enter a direct to a waypoint, as we did, the Airbus wants to turn to that waypoint. This is ok. It would be not ok, if the plane would stay in HDG in that situaton. The other option to sequence the flightplan correctly would be to clear all waypoints behind us and to keep a good to and from waypoint. This is the method which keeps you in HDG mode. If you would press the HDG button, the current HDG would intercept the entered leg between the from and to waypoint. I think that the design of the system iwas done very well and works great.

    Does it depend on company policy if you do single engine taxi out? I flew SAS from Geneva recently and did single taxi out (it seemed), although for just a short while. And thanks for yet another great video. Great details on departure briefing, getting better and better with MCDU etc. And sometimes flying both airports in sim, even better content for me.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for watching and your question. In general, Airbus allows in the SOPs single engine taxi in and single engine taxi out. The airlines usually do their own risk assessment and decide if they want to use the procedures or not. Some airlines do it some not. Single engine taxi out would include an engine start which is not monitored from the outside. Also, the parameters during the start should be monitored by the pilots. If taxiing in parallel at a crowded airport, it may be not the best idea to have the eyes inside and monitoring the engine parameters.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem

      Thanks for the feedback! The Flex 68 means that the thrust is reduced to the same thrust value you would obtain if the outside air temperature would be 68 degrees C. The maximum possible reduction is 25 % and not less than climb thrust.

  • @garethtcollins
    @garethtcollins Před rokem

    I was a bit surprised there was no change in thrust setting or taxi speed when crossing 23R. Is that simply because the next arrival was sufficiently far away? One would have thought you would prefer to be on the crossing runway for the minimum time. You did note the gradient change at P1 though which catches some crews out. Excellent video as usual 👍

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching and the good feedback! We increased the speed during the crossing from about 9 knots to 14 knots. If ATC would have asked us to expedite crossing, we would have increased the speed a little more. Here, the next inbound traffic was far away, and the Lufthansa, which just landed, was still on the runway. Also, we do not want to be too fast because we want to check thoroughly if the runway is really clear and nobody is coming close.

    • @garethtcollins

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching and your question. In general, we do not want to taxi faster than 30 knots straight or 10 knots in a sharp turn. Depending on the circumstances, the actual speeds may be much lower, especially when it is slippery or so. Sometimes 1 or 2 knots in a turn is more than enough to avoid skidding.

    Awesome video, butni have 2 questions. Why did you do the flight controls check if the F/O is the pilot flying? And why did you have to contact another tower at T1? Doesn't one person monitor both 23R and 23L?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! We both have to do the flight control check because the sidesticks are not interconnected like yokes in conventional airplanes. In a conventional plane, one pilot can check the controls and the other just feels and sees the movement of the yoke. It looks like that one tower controller monitored the arrival runway and the other the departure runway and the airspace.

      Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das gute Feedback. Es ist nicht üblich, weit vor einer asphaltieren Startbahn zu beschleunigen. Ich vermute, Du sprichst von Kleinflugzeugen auf einem Flugplatz mit Grassrollwegen. Falls Du unseren Abflug meinst, haben wir erst als wir mittig auf der Runway waren beschleunigt. Als ich die Gashebel nach vorne geschoben habe, waren wir 11 Knoten schnell.

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos danke für deine Rückmeldung, das meinte ich so allerdings nicht. Meine Frage bezog sich darauf, dass du ja schon weit vor dem asphaltierten Teil Gas gibst. • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      @@djsmokie Wenn Du dort landen würdest, beginnt die Runway tatsächlich erst wo die Pfeile zu Ende sind und die Schwelle markiert ist. Sowas nennt man "versetzte Schwelle". Starten darf und soll man dort, wo der Asphalt oder Beton beginnt. Landen aber erst nach der versetzten Schwelle. Ich empfehle hierzu mein Fuerteventura Anflug-Video anzuschauen. Hier kann man ganz gut sehen, wie wir erst auf der um 1000 Meter versetzten Schwelle landen. Die Flugzeuge, die abfliegen wollen, warten jedoch auf dem Rollweg am Anfang der Startbahn.

    if i may i ask, what was it about this situation where a rolling take-off was used instead of what i assume is the standard stationary start.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and your feedback! Airbus A320 series standard takeoff procedure is to line up on the runway, hold the brakes and release the brakes when reaching 50 % N1 or 1.05 EPR depending on the engine type. Airbus also accepts a non standard "rolling takeoff" which we did in the video. It eliminates the stationary part on the runway. Depending on the general circumstances, the crew can decide what they prefer.

    Great video Captain so Professional can I ask why a rolling take off is used like in the video compared to a stand still take off . Is it less wear on engines ? Thank you

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The rolling takeoff needs in total a little less energy and reduces brahe wear because you do not stop the airplane on the runway before applying takeoff power. On the other hand, the rolling takeoff may need a little more takeoff distance because of the different line up angle. Also, during a rolling takeoff, the full takeoff thrust may be available a little later which may require a few meters more takeoff distance.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching and your question. The chronometer which you see in the navigation display is started at takeoff to monitor the time limit for the takeoff thrust. If both engines are running, the limit is 5 minutes and if only one engine is running (after an engine failure) the limit would be 10 minutes.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching and your question. You hear the pilot flying calling "set standard". That means the altimeter settings are changed from the local setting to the standard setting which we use enroute. Subsequently you see that altitude drop on the altimeter. There is a pre defined transition altitude at which we do this change. At this day, the local pressure was with 1038 hpa very high. Standard altimeter setting is 1013.2. So the change at the transition altitude was higher than usual. There is no reason for fear of flying. It is very very safe. Driving in car is way more dangerous than flying in an Airbus A320. I wish you always relaxed flights.
