N/S Work Train Pulls 15T with Broken Compressor from Main Line

- Lots of interesting scanner chatter here - from dry humor to pay to "union" work. It all started when Norfolk Southern motor 6957 lost all oil from an air compressor north of Waynesboro, Virginia. Dispatchers sidelined the 15T at the Waynesboro switchyard, and the V83?local work train crew pulled the train off the main line. Not sure if the 6957’s air compressor leak was solved at the switchyard, or whether it had to be sent to the Roanoke maintenance shop. It was bitterly cold on this particular morning, so perhaps that played a factor in the compressor's failure. It certainly didn't make things easier for the two crews who had to lash the motors together twice - after the first coupling was unsuccessful!
Right after 3:49, I hear that last slight increase in RPM's of the orange locomotive to move forward to make the final coupling and WHAM !!! Talk about super power to create that loud SLAM, and the orange locomotive is just using a tiny fraction of its power!!! Wow!!! Thanks for this great video!
that was ALL of those locomotives, not just the orange one.
Thanks for sharing this with the audience, it's always interesting to see how Norfolk Southern Railroad crews come together and help each other, thanks fir the nice video.
This gave me ideas for my ho layout. Next time a motor burns out I’ll just get a big old consist to tow it out!
I dunno how easy it'll be to do that considering just about all model locos connect the motor to the wheels via worm gear drive. You can't reverse-drive a worm gear, so you're gonna have a locomotive with frozen wheels rubbing along the track.
@@calyodelphi124 I have a couple dummy locomotives that I could simulate it with. You are right that wheels sliding along the track would be bad.
@@lanceotto9569 It probably wouldn't be terrible to the track for a short little scene to play out. I'd be more concerned with putting more strain on the motors of the locos being used to do the rescue.
But I didn't think about dummy locomotives, that's a good idea there!

You'll see mixed power from all RR because trains cross back and forth. I'm in Houston but grew up in an old N&W town of Williamson, WV. Last week we saw a long UP intermodal with NS, CSX, and FerroMex power mixed in.

1:33 and they kiss and fall in love. 9 months later they had a little trolley of their own.
Bruh shut up 💀💀💀
I can’t figure out why he needed to get towed with the other power consist because of the bad compressor. I had one fail once on my leader. The other power in the consist fed air to the leader through the main reservoir MU hose.
I was wondering the same thing why it wouldn't work!
@@robertheinkel6225 on EMD's (not tier4 1010 units) the air compressor is driven from a shaft directly connected to the engine- the compressor had lost all of its oil and was in danger of seizing up, braking the shaft and causing damage to the cooling system, oil pumps and oil cooler. on GE's the compressor is electric motor driven.now why they couldn't shut down that unit and push their train back in the yard with just 1 unit , we may never know.
I live in Georgia and have been driving semi trucks since 2010 and thinking about a career change. How do you become a conductor and does it take a long time? And how often were you home with your family?
Speed Racer You’d need to just apply. The railroad is not like trucking. You’d not be gone for more than a few nights at a time. Some guys work runs that return daily.
rear speaker If this was the problem, then I see shutting down the diesel. Maybe they needed the extra power. If the weather was good, just shut it down and use it like a cab car.

KISSY TRAINS!
Just wondering...why did he come up and bump it then backoff 40 ft, then sit for a few minutes, then come up to it and finally hook up? Its like they take bets. Let's see how long we can block traffic at the gates.
The couplers weren't set properly to make a good joint. As you can see, after they back off the locos, they adjust the couplers so they can make a solid connection. Once they make a joint, they stretch it out to test to make sure it's a good coupling and doesn't come apart.
@@jesseblyth8539 cool ! So stretch it out means to take up any slack and verify its actually connected?

With multiple engines on the broken train, why can’t they use the second engine to provide the air?
i think the other loco´s compressors are usually being used too to provide air so one broken compressor is already enaugh damage to stop the train, its just aguess from my end.

At 4:03 you really don't realize how big they are until you see someone standing next to one, those engines are taller than my house!
You’re right! Another thing that surprises me is how the cab crews can protect their hearing when those locomotive air horns are right above the cab. Even though the air horns are “unidirectional,” some sound waves still have to penetrate into the cab.
Now that's a super rescue

@Elijah Devin no
There was 2 loco mover violation with the second attempt at coupling 1.should never ride into a couple 2. He told the running Loco to stretch and then proceeded to dismount should always dismount before telling your unit to move or climb into the cab while moving
When you’ve been doing it for 15 years there’s less need to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. It’s kind of like gun safety - lots of rules to account for potential mistakes by newbs but when you’ve been shooting and hunting for a long time you recognize which rules are there for the newbs.

I think I missed the point of the "failure". Isolate the sick compressor/loco and fire up one of the other units. Isn't that why we always see 2, 3, 4, loco's on even a consist of ten cars? In the following days I'm sure the smart ones will school me as to why it took all of those folks an engines to move one sick locomotive. Hummm.
Could have been due to the cold in part. The colder it gets the more the gaskets shrink and allow leakage in different areas
could not they shut the unit with the bad compressor down they had 8 wagons
Also do you mean NS instead of N/S? Just saying.
How many engines to US railroads need to pull ONE train?
@@redranger6751 incorrect, NS wouldn’t use that many locomotives to pull one train.

Idiot engineer should have backed his train off the island circuit.

@@tractorboy31 Likely a long time.
Engineer should have backed the train enough (30 feet?) to get off the "island circuit" (section of track across the roadway) so the mee-mool lights *(o)T(o)* would cease operating and stopeople from detouring for who knows how many miles around the crossing.
First world problems.
@@outdoorfrenzy If thengineer would back his train (locomotive) off the island circuit, it would stop the fuel waste and pollution of traffic finding other routes around that crossing. Suchas caused tremendous traffic back-ups and congestion affecting otheroads.
