    Hi all! I am not feeling well today so I struggled a bit with this video. Also the Russian names got into my head a bit dialog wise. As many of you know I have struggled for a lifetime with stuttering and pronunciation. I definitely should have waited to do the video.. But I am stubborn.. So just a heads up and I apologize if I annoyed some of you.

      There are numerous Russian words that are total tongue-twisters! Try pronouncing "Здравствуйте" (Zdravstvuyte), which is the formal "hello". lol! No worries Mate, ya done good! Very informative video that required a lot of digging around to get info on this cool, but obscure engine. Thanks for posting it!

      Russian is a trip to try to speak. Don't worry about it!
      The presentation is solid (lord i have seen SO much worse in train vids on YT) and the information is impeccable. I've seen a good handful of videos on this locomotive alone and this is by far the most comprehensive. Don't stress it and feel better soon!

      The problem isn't so much Russian as it is getting into my head.. Because then I start doing it with everything,, Er, ah, Dah... I can still sound like George W Bush when this happens.. Back in the day I was similar to Bo Jackson.. Not as bad though. it took a lot to stay out of my head when talking. A pitcher with the yips is a good analogy.

    I can honestly imagine the Southern Pacific 4-10-2’s and Union Pacific 9000 Class 4-12-2’s laughing at the AA20-1. It just gives to show that sometimes bigger isn’t always better.

    I believe a Soviet engineering team visited the USA and heard about the UP 9000 series. (They may even have seen one.) When they reported back home they were told to do "better". The result was the enormous, useless 4-14-4. There were two or three successful 12-coupled locos around the world (Germany, Bulgaria, USA), but 12 was the practical limit.

    Who could have imagined copying designs with little to no understanding of the science behind them would not work out well? China and Russia both have always suffered from the exact same problem. Since they steal everything, and don't do the homework themselves, they seldom have great results. When problems pop up, they have no clue what to do about it.

    The least the PRR S1 didn't violently tear apart the tracks as often and could've possibly broken the speed record of Mallard (along with the T1).

    Even trying to have that many driving wheels in a non-duplex or articulated form feels absurd to this day.

    Just the locomotive was a complete disaster? Much of what they design and build is of poor quality.

    Wasn't this called the Stalin class? I remember reading that no one dared to tell him that something named after him was a failure.

      The Josef Stalin class were 2-8-4s, I believe. (Bolshevik Berkshires?) They were fairly mediocre mixed-traffic locos, but some received a streamlined bathtub. Stalin was pleased to hear that they were the fastest locos on the system. Well, somebody had to tell him that.

    This loco was too far ahead of it's time. Heavier Rail construction, wider radius curves and turn-outs, Quality Coal, and Lateral Motion on leading and Rear Drivers. Then just maybe, it would have been a valid design....unless it pulled couplers out of Freight Car bodies? But the underlying Political System contrived to cause its failure from the Start. And the 1960 scrapping was obviously part of the Post Stalinist purging of History.
    It would have made a wonderfull Museum example of what could have been but wasn't.

      I cannot see anything that big being unhinged and successfully managing curves.. No matter the track weight and supporting structure.
