    Great system, Kallie! Confession time. Paper used to be the bane of my existence. Even though my home was usually neat and clean, at one time I had so much paper I stashed it in large grocery bags in my bedroom closet. It haunted me all the time.. A few years ago I took 2 days to go through it and found 99% of it was garbage! I filled the kitchen trash can twice and nearly burned out my shredder. I now have a system similar to yours and it has worked for years! It's never too late to do this..no matter how much or how little paper clutter you have. XO❤

    1 thing I’ve done that’s really helped is having a binder with clear plastic paper protectors inside. I put all warranty information along with receipts for the product and owners manuals for any item we buy (refrigerators, watches, technology etc.) It’s easy to find if we need it because it’s clear and we can easily see what’s inside. This also is easy to clean out 1x every year or two because we can easily see and throw out old warranties or manuals/receipts we don’t need anymore for items we no longer own etc. It’s kind of like your home binder but for important things you don’t need to see often but need to have quick and easy access to if needed.

    The more you deal with paper clutter, the more you realize 99% of it is totally unnecessary. Lots of paperwork can be digitized and we don't even need physical paperwork most of the time. My trick is: once I have 5 pieces of paper that need to be dealt with, I do so immediately. I don't let piles accumulate.

    We use an accordion file box to keep track of warranty info, instruction booklets, diagrams (irrigation system, sound system components). I often refer to it for “how do I ….?” Or “who can fix this?” We sold our house this spring after 18 years and left this info for the buyers. Our realtor said he’d never had such a complete file … it made the transition so easy for everyone. New file/new house includes ALL the manuals and instructions (fridge, washer, garage doors, irrigation,generator, HVAC …). Super useful.

    Thank you for the video and yes I watch these as I do housework. The one pile I have not mentioned is shred. I keep a shred pile so the act of shredding doesn't distract me. I also have time for second thought to think something through before it get destroyed; sort of "are you sure you want to delete this?" message. I really avoid the think about it pile, that pile will end up the tallest one.
    My receipts don't get an immediate toss because I track my spending in a calendar binder. Every financial advice is to track spending to see where I am hemorrhaging money and where am self debting. I can see exactly where the money went.
    I really make an effort decrease incoming papers: free community newspapers, magazines, hobbies, activities, and advertising. I resist the urge to bring this into my home. I make an effort to get off company lists. The worst offender for me is the personal writing. I am a writer and it is really tough to part with the blood, sweat and tears that went into writing the piece. I keep it in a three ring folder. I shredded several years of journals. I am not sure what I will do with the binders. I live in a 930 Sq ft home. I cant save everything.

Just last night I was going thru a box of bills that span more than a decade, trying to determine which pile to shred 1st. A new shredder was even delivered yesterday. The 1st thing I wanted to shred was the instructions but I thought I should read them 1st. Thanks for this!

    Really great ideas Kallie! I hold onto my receipts because it may be something I need to use again (eg. need to return something). So I put them into a small plastic bag labeled with the name of the credit card. Then monthly, when I get my statement, I match them and then file them into a file for “receipts for --- (year)”. I hang onto them for a year and then recycle if I don’t need them. Occasionally I have needed to go back into receipts so it helps me find them. For Debit card receipts, I put them in another bag and check them back to my monthly statement from the bank. It is something I have needed to refer to often. Thanks for the great ideas!

    Bravo 👏. I do most of what you suggest. Any paper that comes into our house, mail school etc.. goes on the kitchen island. I am the one who goes through it only bc I’m the only one that hates the paper diarrhea that piles up in our house. So like you, I get on it asap. Any paper that is not necessary I have to rip it twice. Then I recycle it. That tells me and my family that I have seen it, read it, and dismissed it. Bills get paid online as soon as they arrive and they are posted to the pay by date, so I don’t forget to pay it and then the bill gets filled in my filing cabinet. I don’t like paperless bc as a teacher I don’t always see the email bc of all the daily work emails. Paper is easier. I hold all bills for at least 5 years, then they get shredded. I did not know what to do with the “I’ll think about pile” normally I force myself to keep it and it ends up like you said little piles everywhere… the diarrhea piles is what I call them… yes they disgust me. I like the idea of your vertical shelf. I could use that. Neat tidy and in one place. A forever home. Can you please share a link for it?

I also try to schedule things, like paperwork, for times when I know I will have some down time. As I only get paid once a month, I schedule the 25th of each month to review my bills and set up the payments to be paid in the following month. Some people like the auto-pay feature for all their bills but the only way I found to not go overboard on spending, is to review all my bills monthly. Things that have no change to the amount paid, such as insurance premiums, cell phone, etc. I will go ahead and do auto-pay for them. My “later basket” is usually done on Sunday mornings as I can take the time to read any magazines or catalogs and can then put them out for recycling which happens on Mondays. I hope this helps you!

    As a former legal/executive admin, I found it better to do more digital filing. Have receipts emailed, then put them in a digital file. If you’re using the app to get rewards, can you use digital receipts? Scan items that you don’t need to have as originals. I use Mint to track spending and categorize each other expenditures. I shred anything before tossing and black out me name and address.

  • @alyce-kayruckelshaus1224

    What a great system! At this moment besides a few small piles of papers in various places, I have a table in my office with a stack of paper that is... Not kidding or exaggerating... Over 2 ft tall. And it's not just a neat stack of paper. It covers the entire table at that depth. As I watched your video, I jumped on my computer and ordered the stuff you were talking about on Amazon.

    Every time I sit down to clean up paperwork I find myself wasting time with some things "I want to think about" Charity donations, political surveys, offers for services that I may soon be in the market for, etc. Now I will have a "think about it" file. That is brilliant!!! Thank you so much, I'm sure that's where I waste the most time is trying to decide what to do with some things that come in the mail because I want to "think about it" for a day or two.

    Awesome system! Paper is a big pain sometimes. For my appliance manuals, large purchase receipts etc, I keep a large binder with page protectors. Whenever I put something new into it, I go through and purge the items that we no longer have, or whatever and get rid of them. This system works great for us, because if something happens, I know right away where everything is.

    it was great to see your presentation of your organization style. its simplicity is very refreshing and i took note of a few good ideas i liked. on a side note of video production, i recommend drinking half decaf coffee before you film. there were 5 points where I had to go back and re watch because sooooo much detail was presented sooooo fast i couldn't remember the first 3 things you talked about. i finally figured out i needed to slow the video down to 0.75 speed so i could hear your full presentation and comprehend your talking points. thank you for sharing your helpful information. it is helping me tackle a big project.

    I love your videos and how concisely you explained your system. These are definitely ideas I will use. However there’s no category for the paper source that piles up the fastest in our house - kids art and schoolwork! Ahhhh! I’m wracked with guilt about throwing things away, but what’s the point of storing it? Even taking pictures of the art just piles up (digitally)

      Maybe they need their own "think about it" bin that is gone through at the end of term and they decide what to keep, photograph, gift to family, use as wrapping paper and throw away.

    • @carolc2574
      @carolc2574 Před 2 lety +7

      You could keep them for a week and at the end of the week they get to decide which one is their best work of art. At the end of the year you would have 52 pieces of paper that you could bind together and create a book per child. If 52 sounds like too much, you can make them decide again at the end of each month which one is their best and you would get 12 pieces of paper a year 🤔. About getting digital copies, you could use a cloud like google photos or Amazon photos so they don’t take space out of your phone and they survive changing devices

    My system would literally be a file cabinet and a recycling bin tbh. Anything important, I will take care of the minute I see it. Most of my mail is junk mail and any bills or billing statements I get in the mail are also available online, so I don’t need to keep those. I’m struggling to figure out what I actually need to keep because everything is online now, I just have a paper copy for some reason.

    I already do alot of this. I use a 12 pocket folder that houses bank statements. Tax info. Etc at end of year I go through. I keep house maint. In a binder. I also have insurances binder and refresh regularly.

  • @Madi4321
    @Madi4321 Před rokem +1

    Categories:
    1. Toss it quick
    2. Complete it as quick as you can (binder)
    3. File it (your filing cabinet maybe in another room so you have a category for this - sometimes it’s tricky to know what you need to keep and what you can just throw away) Marie Kondo says get rid of most of all the paper.
    4. think about it/time will tell. I’m going to hold onto this paper for as big as this basket is and then I will throw it away. I will delude myself into thinking I will do something with it, but I should’ve thrown it away in the beginning.
