👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Congratulations Dr Becky on 3 years of making amazing content for us all to consume on this channel. Indeed it is all of us that should be thanking you, so thank you form us all here for your amazing enthusiasm, dedication and passion that goes into everything you do here, and elsewhere on top of having a very busy life/job. The stars don't tell the future. They tell stories, thank you Dr Becky ♥
3 years, wow. I started watching 1 and a half years ago, but it feels like she's been around forever. Good job girrrlll
Why is it that whenever anybody says there’s a meteor shower / eclipse / other astronomical event, you can absolutely guarantee 100% cloud cover? Every fecking time!
Feel ya, same issue. Currently storming. 😩
You must live in Scotland.
Most time I look up all I see is cloud ☁
Astronomical events attract clouds. XD
as someone who a) falls asleep easily and b) lives in the uk i empathise with this so badly hahah
also when it isn't raining or cloudy i fall asleep before i see anything :")
@@roughfootage6501 English Midlands actually, but I’ve spent enough time north of the border to know what you mean. We have a few breaks in the cloud now, in the wrong direction, and a REALLY bright moon!
Thanks for taking the time to share with us, Dr. Becky. Happy anniversary!
Your channel is a wonderful resource for the latest news on Astrophysics/Astronomy. Happy 3rd channel birthday Dr Becky !
Just to add my congratulations on your third anniversary here. Has been great to watch, and we've all learned a lot along the way. Also great to see your subscriber numbers having grown over the last couple of years. Basically, keep up the great work.
Thanks!
I've been following you on this journey from Sixty Symbols to here, and cant help but feel like I'm observing someone grow and reach their true potential. Honestly I feel lucky to have a chance to witness you grow in your career. You are awesome, and I cherish every new piece of knowledge I learn from you. Have a great one, you deserve it !!!
Congrats on three years and thanks for doing this. I love how you explain how and why we "know" what we know and often even how we learned it.
You're one of the few channels left worth enduring CZcams's aggressive (and intrusive) ad campaign.
I want to say, Dr. Becky, that your science channel is my favorite. I'm a writer, and every character I really like can't help but display their enthusiasm when they discuss things in which they're interested. You ooze enthusiastic interest when you discuss this stuff. I love that you're an experimental and observational physicist. While I do value the contributions of theoreticians, your lot actually does the most important work of science, namely actually looking at what the universe is saying by just being what it is. I essentially love that you're like the best role models for any girl that might be interested in STEM fields. Because I think female minds do science better, as long as they can overcome social hurtles. I really love your attitude to not knowing things. It's excitement. You love the idea of not know yet, of new physics. You're a true scientist. We need more people like you, Dr. Becky. 🙂
We missed you last week... Nice to have you and a monthly installment of Night Sky News back.
Congrats on 3 yrs Dr. Becky! I have been watching your channel since it's onset. As others have noted, I can't believe that it has been 3 years. Question: I read your first book, so when is the next book coming out? So looking forward to that! 👍👍😉😉
I found your CZcams videos totally by chance and I am so glad i did. I love your delivery style with your professional knowledge of the subject linked to your infectious enthusiasm. As viewers we end up with the perfect storm. You are exactly the voice astrophysics needs. Awesome, keep up the fantastic work.
Love this part of your channel, thank you!
Thank you for all the work you do producing theses videos. We really appreciate it.
Congrats on 3 years!!
Yay! Finally!! Was waiting for this video for a long time. Definitely gonna be looking out for Uranus.
11:02 If I understand orbital mechanics correctly (from Kerbal Space Program), the gravity assists for this probe actually take energy away, so it can get into a lower orbit around the Sun. Without a way to dump that energy, it would just do a flyby and swing back out towards the Earth. Since it can give some of its energy to Venus and Mercury on the way, it is able to end up in an orbit around Mercury.
It actually takes more delta-v to hit the Sun, instead of just swinging around it.
If you gonna do a flyby of Moho - you better bring more boosters :)
I'm pretty sure you're right. It takes less delta-V (energy applied) to get to Pluto than to get to Mercury. And oddly, the "easiest" way (least propellant) to get to Mercury is to go out near Pluto and then back -- but that's a LONG trip. So, using thrust, to get to Mercury we'd have to fire in the opposite direction that we're heading, to slow us down and reduce our kinetic energy with respect to the sun. Likewise, when using planetary assist to get to Mercury, we do it to LOSE energy, so we don't fly right back to where we started from. There's a really good youtube on this but I can't recall who did it. Vsauce? Veritasium? Astrum? Adam Neely? (OK, not Adam.)
@@turtle2720 yeah, my first Moho mission did not have enough fuel for teh return so I had to send a fuel probe to rescue them. It's insane how much more energy it takes to get closer to the sun rather then sling-shotting to the outer planets.
I was about to say much the same thing.
@@JeffLearman -_- I can't remember which video I've watched but now I can't sleep. help!! But I've watched it for ksp.
Wow 3 years already congrats, love the channel
Congratulations on 3 years Dr. Becky, 🎉🎉. Thank you for making staring up into the night sky so interesting and so much fun. ☺️. Would love to know when you are going to watch either another episode of Star Trek or a Science Fiction based TV show or film? Keep the great "Interstellar" work ☺️🎉🎉
Awesome! Thanks for the news, Dr. Becky! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I can imagine live streams with Becky "Communicating with the cosmos through my telescope. And you are invited!".
I'm gonna be so nervous until all clear with the JWST and its safely up there.
I'm moreso impatient. I've been waiting literally half my life for them to finally launch it, after expecting it in 2007 for the first half of my teen years. I desperately want to see some of these images already.
@@Honey_Daddy Gotta give the aliens time to hide their thermal signatures.
I remember subscribing about a day after you did the deep sky video announcing this channel! Can't believe it's been 3 years already!
same!
Same here! I guess that time flies when you are having fun! 👍👍😉😉
3 years = 1 kiloday
Congrats on the 3yeqr anniversary. Tuned in about 1.5 years ago and immediately binged your entire catalogue of vids.
Love this channel, keep up the good work and the funny bloopers.
Also, have you thought about doing a vid for us who want to take up astronomy. A little guide to telescopes etc.
Thanks Dr Becky 😀
Congratulation on 3 years Dr. Becky!
Good job bringing the night sky news for 3 years. I look forward to these as they remind me of the end of planetarium lectures.
OMG!!! Glad I found this channel, TY for the info and the way you present it.
i bloody love this channel 🥰🥳 congrats on 3 years!
Thanks for putting these together, good luck for your trip
11:20 - the flybys are *so* that the probe *slows down* enough in order to fall further in towards the Sun, not to *avoid* that.
Orbital mechanics are weird. You slow down at one point in an orbit (preferably its apoapsis, furthest point from the major body it's orbiting) in order to then *speed up* due to the lower/closer orbit that puts you into at the periapsis (closest approach).
You start at Earth with around 30km/s speed around the Sun and need to *lose* some of that in order to fall even vaguely further in towards the Sun. This is why you can't "just throw stuff into the Sun". It's actually more difficult than accelerating something to Solar System escape velocity from the Earth ! That's around 42km/s overall, but you already have that 30km/s of the Earth's orbital speed, so only need an additional 12km/s. There are some other factors to take into account, like gravity losses during launch which result in an additional 14km/s or so being needed overall. So still under half the velocity change you'd need to "throw something into the Sun".
Yes, I was a bit surprised to hear this basic orbital mechanics misunderstanding. Just goes to show that expertise in one subarea of a field doesn't even predict more than layman understanding in a slightly different area of the same field. Never mind brain surgeons doing rocket science - don't let astrophysicists near your rockets!
From the energy perspective, a (near-)circular orbit around the Sun, puts you exactly halfway to escaping the Sun's gravity (by the Virial Theorem). You do still need some additional energy to escape Earth's gravity, though, of course.
As for "throwing stuff into the Sun," just hurl it, at noon (when you're directly under the Sun), from the equator directly eastward (opposite to the Earth's orbital motion), at a speed that, once Earth's gravity is escaped, has it going 30 km/s wrt Earth-center. (This geometry gets you the bit of assist due to Earth's rotation.)
It will then "free fall," from rest wrt the Sun, into our star, in several months.
Fred
It is like emptying a bathtub, some little dirt in the water that just refuse to go down the sink and even get jettisoned all the way to the other side. I would love to see a Sci Fi chase sequense using thease mechanics taking place over months. Or it could be a spaceship with a ruptured fueltank forced to go slow and old school with what little fuel they got left. Star Trek chace sceans are just boaring in comparison. In movies events taking place during months can be shortened down to minutes for the viewers after all.
You are amazing Dr. Becky! Great episode!
WHAYYYY DID U NOT UPLODE LAST WEEEEEEEEK!?!?!?! also thank u for ur amazing videos 💜💜💜
Congrats for the three years!! Always giving me a smile 😊
Always enjoy your episodes...and Congratulations for completing 3 Youtubian Earth years...Keep looking up!
I can imagine an ad for a digital telescope with Metallica in the background: "do you see what I see?"
So happy you're back with space news, it's probably the astronomy series I enjoy the most
This is the first time I've ever seen your channel. I've never seen anyone speak w such passion about anything! Thank you Dr. Becky! And I look forward to next month!
Dr B thanks for 3 years of my favourite science.
Dr Spunky. Keep up the outstanding work.
3 yrs 🤩.. wow congratulations 🎉. Now I can officially say that I've been following this channel for 1/3 of its life.
Nice. Three years of Great content. Love your channel. 🔭
Congratulations! 👍
Three years already! Good luck for many more!
Dr Becky Just found your channel and I am so excited to see someone that's making sciences cool. Not speaking above people, or speaking down to people. Please keep these videos going im catching up, cause.. black holes are cool even black hole burps.
Happy third anniversary Dr Becky

She's the best ☺️
I just happen to be reading your book right now! Glad to see you are on youtube!
I was missing this. Love your work, Dr. Becky!
Welcome to the Maldives.! Never thought we would see you here! Thanks for visiting ... These days bit cloudy tho next week hopefully it's better. also full moon time this week less stars are visible.
I can't believe Dr Becky hasn't got her own TV show. ❤

Just subscribed after watching your video on Webb. What a loveable character you are.
A BIG THANKS to you Dr. Becky. Love your channel.
LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEO'S THANKS
Hi Dr Becky! Love your informative and entertaining videos. I often have to watch several time just to try and understand everything you talk about! In this video, you mention apps to help find stars in the night. Which app would you recommend? Thanks very much for your help!
Thank you. I remember why astronomy was so exciting when looking at your video. Look forward to next month.
Crikey! Been watching you for three years? OMG that’s a lot of sitting in front of my pad! 😳
All good though Becks. Would do it all again.
Thank you for your efforts and time spent to give us the knowledge you do. It’s all appreciated as you can tell from all the positive comments. Keep going girl! 😊😊😊
Congratulations on 3 years!

Dr Becky 🙏🏼🙌🏼It's been fun and interesting, each and every posting thanks 👍🏼
Congratulations Dr Becky absolutely love your channel.
Which app are you using in the Looking Up segments when you show things like Mercury rising in this video?
Brilliant video, exciting stuff, thanks. :)
Congratulations 🥳 thanks I love this Chanel 💚💚💚
I love this segment! I built a "sidewalk telescope" about fifteen years ago, with an 8 inch mirror. I generally look at the moon and planets. Love the information about what is coming up.
Love these kinds of videos! I am loving astronomy even more
I think your fab... Fab video thanks Dr. Becky... Love from Liverpool, UK xxx
Enjoy the Maldives!
I was there about 25 years ago.
Had a great time and it's very beautiful.
Congratulations on 3rd, Your videos simple, well explained, jargon-free for simple yet curious mind like me. I always look forward to your videos get me connected to the understanding of universe.
I am so excited for you Dr Becky I have not even watched the video yet. CONGRATULATIONS on your Nobel Prize. However, I am puzzled as to the mechanics of how you flashing would cause floods on Mars, I will have to watch the video to find out more.
Excellent presentation! Congratulations!
Please mention the times in GMT ... It will be helpful for the viewer from different countries
Thank you for sharing this! Great stuff, was happy to catch the Lucy Launch live on YT. Keep up the good work Dr. Becky!☺💪🏻🚀🔭
Love u video s !
Man keep up the good work
you are a joy to watch and you make learning fun.... peace
Three years already? I have been watching since the sixty symbols videos. It doesn't seem that long. I guess because they're still making those. Congrats on the success.
Dr. Becky--Could you put more diagrams, maps, and examples in the videos and leave them longer? For the maps, it would be nice to show the map and then zoom out, or present another reference map; just to give us a perspective. Another request: I may have missed this, but...I have seen the new videos of the diagrams of how the planets move around the sun, being dragged by gravity, but I haven't seen anything about how this is with the Kuiper Belt. I always thought that the Belt provided some protection for the planets from "space junk," is this true and how would it protect us if it is behind us? Or, do we have any protection. other than the vastness of space? Thanks.
Love it Dr Becky!!! Thanks!
Dear @Dr.Becky, Waiting for a video on unusual radio signals received from space. 😌
Thank you Doctor Becky for your wonderful presentations and sharing your enthusiasm and beauty.
Hay Doc! Can't believe you''v been nattering on at me for 3 years! Time fly's when your having fun. Hope you keep on nattering for at least another 3 years. Thanks again Doc. Becky.
Congratulations on the milestone!
Love this channel thank you Becky 😘
Dr. Becky, what telescope you recommend for an amateur astronomer ? maybe in the 500-600 dlls range ? Thanks
Happy Anniversary!
*3'th anniversary .... Congratulations dear Dr. Becky*
*I hope we'll celebrate the 50'th one on Mars. Big party with you and Dr. Becky's army (subscribers) and Klingons!*
*And I'll be a commander of science officers; admiral m5*
Thanks for your great info 👍
I got incredibly excited when checking that Unistellar Optics link, checking the specs and capabilities of the telescopes, before I clicked a few pages on and found the price. Dang. Guess that level of astronomy is way above and beyond a casual pop-sci/cosmology fan like myself.
Never buy that telescope!
You can buy a better one for less money.
This telescope is almost like a scam!
You can find videos on CZcams about how bad it is, :-)
@@PieterPatrick Yep. Buy a far cheaper, but bigger, telescope and just duck tape your phone to the eyepiece and it'll be far better.
@@PieterPatrick That's fair. It's way far out of my price class and skill level at any rate. The stores locally seem to recommend things like the Bresser Pollux or Quasar, or National Geographic tubes for my level as a newbie, and they're more in my price range and capability.
great video BECKY!!!!!!
@Dr.Becky I have been looking for a good telescope that's good a for beginner but its either cheap and breaks down within 5 mins or too expensive were i cant afford it. So could you recommend me a good telescope for a beginner?
Congratulations on your three year anniversary. 🥂
Thanks for all the great educational content, you present an amazing show full enthusiasm and information to inspire the next generation of star watchers and give us older people with an armature interest so helpful information answering some questions in our knowledge like the one you did on how space cameras work. In New Zealand l have had an amazing view of Venus out my bedroom window when I go to bed for the last week or two even when the moon was right beside it for a few nights. Keep up the great work.
❤ TY for 3 years
hi dr becky! really enjoying your content--found you by pure accident, but i'm loving everything here! always love seeing space news/info, and you put it down in laymen's terms really well~
i've been watching a lot of your older videos, but i had a question that i hope you see/someone who can answer sees:
as far as we know, the hottest possible stars are blue stars, but is it possible for ones to exist that are hotter? could there be stars so hot that they're purple, or even go over into ultraviolet? if they're even possible, what would they look like to the naked eye since we can't see into those spectrums?
i know that stars give off ultraviolet light and higher wavelengths, but i just think it's...an interesting idea. i'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Addicted to your channel!
Excited for this one!
