They were actually there in the field, probably just smoke bombs being set off behind them. There's a video that shows how the video was shot. The song was written by Faouzia and performed by her, solo, at first. It was then sent to Legend who agreed to doing a duet within a week of hearing it. I believe the song was tweaked by other writers, for the duet, before the two performed it.
