I had an old boyfriend who got hammered on Soju in S. Korea back in the late '80s. They were eating a big meal at a restaurant and kept tossing the stuff back. Since they were sitting on cushions on a very low bench, he didn't realize just how much it was affecting them. It was only when they stood up that he realized that the floor had developed a decided tilt.

Being in the military I’ve heard stories of the unregulated soju. You never knew if you were gonna get a nice buzz or wake in an alley. They say the fastest way to make E-5 is to go to Korea as an E-6.

Soju is not unregulated. It is highly regulated. It just depends on the brand. Maybe you should learn Korean and stop being so ignorant. Also, Korea is not a third world country with unregulated industry. The U.S is more unregulated. Most American food products are unfit for the Korea market because the regulations are so low in the U.S.

I'd had Soju in South Korea and the Philippines when I was in the Marines, but coming back Stateside it wasn't in the shops, so I didn't have it again for a long time. Then I married a Korean. Now it's always to hand. LOVE IT, and it's spoiled this former USSR citizen from drinking wodka! So tasty and SO versatile. Drinking the plain, the flavoured, all good. You can add things like Ume soda to the plain - or the fruit Torani syrups & it's awesome. Add it to bad beer to make a VERY drinkable concoction called a Somaek. Also makes a tremendous Bloody Mary the morning after too many Titanic Somaeks LOL Soju is dangerous because it's a "stealth drink" - it tastes so good and it doesn't taste alcoholly, so you forget that most Sojus have an ABV the same or higher than a fortified wine. Also... the flavoured ones tend to be REALLY good... and get better with each sip. And since I'm on a roll - PERFECT PARTY/BRUNCH COCKTAIL: 1/3 Plum or Lychee Soju. 1/3 Honey Syrup. 1/3 Lemon Juice (or Key Lime Juice)... you're WELCOME lol

Eh, I don't think people were requesting it to see you suffer as much as they genuinely wanted to see your take on an interesting and slightly out of the ordinary beverage. If they wanted to see you suffer they would have recommended Baijiu, Soju's bastard Chinese cousin. You should totally get on that btw.

Soju's EVIL b*stard cousin! I Looooooooooove Soju but Baiju is worse than the rotgut homemade wodka my uncle used to make back when I was a kid in the USSR LOL

This stuff can get you in trouble!!
Just trust me on this one:
In Korea those folks know how to handle this stuff and there's rituals around it you don't know.
Plus they think it's hilarious to get you really drunk.

This brings back many friday safety briefs. Commanders, sergeants major, first sergeants, PLs and PSGs lifting dry status again, all telling us to be careful with soju, telling the underaged people that just because Koreans would serve us booze didn't make it legal, the smirks shot around the formation between the 18-20 year old privates, then after being dismissed everyone runs back to the barracks, changes into civilian clothes, pulls out half their paycheck in won, hops on a bus and slams back 2 or 3 before 6pm, aimlessly wander sketchy alleys and streets while drinking more they picked up at a small kiosk along the sidewalk cause you can drink in public in korea, go into less than reputable bars, hide from MPs every 30 minutes, then stumble 2 miles back home at 12am cause you missed the bus you swore you'd catch. And then the next morning everyone being called in cause some dude in A Co got in a fist fight with a taxi driver or Filipino lady boy he thought was a chick

unflavored soju just takes like less miserable vodka
im guessing if i took a glass of jinro classic (20%) and a vodka that was watered down to 20% i wouldn't be able to tell the difference
