  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #331
Charles Manson had a fascination with Death Valley, believing that it was home to the secret entrance to a bottomless pit where he and his Family could wait out the coming apocalypse. Check out these five places in and around Death Valley where the Manson Family spent the most time.

They used to come to Ridgecrest as well. I remember seeing a girl with the swastika carved in her forehead, in the mid Seventies. The family members did that during the trial to show support for Charlie. Yeah, they were nuts.

My cousin, Johnny Otterstrom, is in the book "Helter Skelter". He wasn't involved with them, he was kind of a handy man in Death Valley. Manson offered him girls in payment for his services, he declined.
Weirder, the Manson family, those that didn't go to prison, moved less that five miles from where I lived in the 70's in the little town of Lucerne Valley, CA at the old C-H Ranch (my first real paycheck job at age 11 as an Assistant Cook, C-H was a Dude Ranch).

In the mid 60's I went to the Death Valley region and spent some time exploring, by myself and with my room mate. I'm sure I was in places the Manson family hung out, and it is really creepy to look back on how close I came to colliding with that evil.

    • @someotherdude

In 1976 my ex-wife and I visited her bother who was serving time at the Vacaville State Prison in California. Charles Manson was also being held there at the time. While he was not in the general population, my brother in law’s cell mate had weekly ‘therapy’ sessions where Charley was one of the participants. Vacaville was a surprisingly small prison in the 70’s. My brother in law later told us we were probably within a hundred yards of Charley at that time when we visited.

Hey wonderhussy, Hard to believe 50 years. About 30 years ago when I was hanging around in death valley, I stopped at a little mini mart near death valley junction, maybe trona, I can't remember, and there was a small stand/ table there with a gentleman selling his new book about the Manson family travels around death valley in the late 1960s, book was" Desert shadows" author was a park ranger Bob Murphy who worked that area. Very good book, he also signed it for me... Don't know if it's available anywhere but a great read if you can find it

Great video as always...I have an old 1955 Dodge Power Wagon Bus that the Manson girls ran around Death Valley in while Manson was in jail. The bus belonged to David Barton who was the husband of Catherine Myers alias Catherine Gillies. She was one of the four Manson girls that shaved her head outside the courthouse during his trial. She was the grand daughter of the Myers family in Death Valley

Manson was influenced by another book as well. He had found a book called "The Testament of Adolf Hitler", written by Hitler himself. That book was his motivation to try to start a race war, which he hoped the Tate - LaBianca murders would provoke.

    *Wow, that was GREAT!*
A Wonderhussy Documentary! 60 Minutes better look out! It’s a shame that Power Wagon just rots away in silence! I think Sarah should interview one of the “Manson girls” who is still in prison! Trona was really hit hard by the quakes - maybe we’ll get a Wonderhussy exclusive on Quake-Ageddon and what happened to Trona, Ridgecrest and China Lake! I wonder how the “talc houses” held up to the quake?

The cabinet he was on was even shorter than you got. As flexible as you are somehow that evil nut job got into a smaller space. Whole place had an off kilter vibe about it. Great video!

Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day) was a music producer and was introduced to Manson by Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. After meeting with Manson a couple of times and hearing him sing, Melcher decided not to work with him and to keep his distance because of the strange behavior he witnessed by Manson and his followers. In January of ‘69 Doris begged her son to move from his rented house and in with her because she was worried about the things he told her he saw when meeting Manson. When Manson decided to get revenge, Sharon Tate had moved into the rental vacated by Melcher. Melcher was the actual target.

There is a book I read recently about the whole Manson thing. What we have been led to believe all these years has all been discredited in this book. It's about a re-investigation of everything. Example; The Tate/LaBianca homes were not chosen randomly. They knew where they were going and who lived there. Several of the characters within those homes were major drug dealers, but Bugliosi came up with his Helter Skelter nonsense to move the trial away from the illegal activities within those homes because of who was behind it. The book is called, "Now Is The Only Thing That's Real: A re-examination of the Manson murders, motives and mythos". I got the Kindle version. Read it and you will never see the case the same again.

@@debbiebrown4420 Hope you enjoy it. It really opens our eyes as to just how corrupt our judicial system can be. Reading it can be a bit strained at times because it seems like he wrote 4 or 5 books then tied them together into one book. Lots of repeated stuff. I've watched a lot of videos of interviews with Manson. After reading the book, a lot of the stuff that he says in interviews that seemed to be nonsense suddenly made sense and tied truth into the book. I was even able to finish some of his sentences. I was really surprised at many things I read about some of the things that went on in the Tate house. An open drug house, orgies, filming porn movies, sado-masichism and a lot of big name celebrities who "dropped in" to buy stuff from Sebring. Voytek Frykowski as well. Many well known celebrities involved.

Hey WH, you are getting closer and closer to 100,000.You were right to point out that the family is not totally gone. Squeaky, for instance, lives in upper state New York. Quick story. In 1977 a friend lived in Box Canyon off a dirt road. One evening we were having a couple of beers and he told me how the only other people on the road were some ex-Manson family members. A few minutes later five to ten (long time ago, it seemed like a lot) blew past us headed towards that house. My friend and I decided it was a good time to leave and we drove out. Not a fascinating story; but, it was when I found out that not all of the family had been jailed. I don't remember the ladies name; but, one of the Manson family tried to hijack a plane to Hawaii, I believe, in order to get Manson released.
