    1. I love the look of the Vstrom as well.
    2. I do respect people who ride them even just because they trade the "expensive bike prestige" (and whatever it's good for) for a sensible bike.
    3. No bike can do everything. Maybe I can also add not a lot of bikes can do everything as well as the Vstrom does.
    4. Cool video!

A cracking video again, I actually like the fact that lots of riders don't understand that the V-strom is such a versatile platform on which to build, it's the main reason we can get so much for so little, makes me smile every time.

Your $3500.00 V-Strom has probably gone more places then those $25,000-$30,000 bikes. Your videos prove that you go more places than Starbucks.

So i got my motorcycle licence this year. i live in Norway so it is quite expensive. (paid around 2000$ /20 thousand nok for the licence)
i am a tall guy (193cm ) and finding a bike that is cheap, rides good and fit me was really hard. went online and found a 2008 V-Strom 650 with 70k km driven for about 4000$ (40k nok)
and i went to try it out, took a 30 min test drive and fell in love with the bike, it has a comfort seat (a bit taller than oem) givi cases on side and top, and crashbars on the side. it has been looked after quite well. i bought the bike right there and drove about 200km home that day, not even a bit tired after that trip (my first trip after i got the licence and the first trip over 50km) had a few trips this summer, but with work, family and bad weather i did not get all the riding i wanted. but upgraded a bit, got handguards (looks like the one in this video) engine cover, usb charger, smoked turnsignals. i have plans of painting the bike this winter and upgrading some more, pluss full service with valves, oils filters etc. planning a few roadtrips for next summer and can`t wait. this bike is really good for new riders, handles great, not that much fuel usage, looks good and it is cheap to buy

In 2018 I rode my 2nd gen model 43,000 two up around the world. No issues with reliability at all. I agree with many of your views of the bike. Owned it 9 years and no plans to change. I have ridden many bikes, even was a BMW dealer back in the day and this bike doesn’t have the corrosion issues that many BMWs suffer from. Also its been dealer serviced from Portland, Oregon to Auckland, New Zealand, and its economical to run.

Great video. I agree on every point. Being an extremely light person, the stock suspension is great for me. It truly is equal parts adventure/sports/tourer. Like you, i get a bit bored of hearing people look down/overlook the V-strom, but part of me likes standing up for it. I suspect the reason why your bike is better off road than your wife's, is because your bike says "Adventure" on the side of it. Keep up the good work and watch out for those DUIs.

I love my V-Strom. Extremely good bike for value.
Regarding the valve adjustment, I did it myself. The big difficulty (when you have ABS) is that the timing chain tensioner of the rear cylinder is located almost behind the ABS device. Very tricky. I had to find solutions :-) (to long to explain)

Great video and I love all the facts and interesting points you bring up!! (I'm still learning about my V-Strom) I have ridden for over 47 years which includes mostly dirt, some cruiser, a lot of sport bike time and at 53 years old I bought a used (cheap) 2009 V-Strom 650 and she's a peach. Having so much fun already either solo or with the wife and have many more plans coming soon this fall. This bike will see mostly dirt roads as I am tired of challenging cars on the pavement. Just put some aggressive Shinko tires on her and we'll see how that pans out but so far so good. I may eventually morph to a ktm 890 or something like that, but at 1/4 the cost, I may just keep what I am enjoying.....my V-Strom.

This week I gave up on my broken '02 1K and picked up an '07 650... Only a couple rides in and I already do not miss the extra 30hp... the 650 will be a keeper... swapped over the hard bags - same subframe, same mounts... but I did have to bring over the rear peg mounts so the pannier mount system (Trax) fit without any other changes...Looking forward to lots of great riding.... IMO the newer adjustable windscreen is no better than the original on the '02... I will repaint it at some point in a darker shade of blue (PO repainted it from the stock red)... otherwise it is just great as is. Oh, also putting the tool tube on the left pannier bars, where the dual exhaust was on the 1K....

Hi, as an owner of 2nd gen DL650 I totally agree with you. 25000miles in 2 years, commuting daily 80 miles. I dont care about design I just feel fine riding it, simple, reliable, serviceable by myself in the garage without any special equipment, I like the quietness too (84db at 4400revs). Recently a dealer offered me a test ride on MT09 and I have asked if is possible to get rid of that Akrapovic exhaust and mount the original one.. :) A fresh knowledge from yesterday I dont like: for changing the clutch plates a coolant must be drained + detach whole front chasis part, ouch.. Of course from time to time I look for another bike stronger, faster but I still cant find another one with such a good price/value ratio.

WOW this was a really great review. I just road my new 2006 650 Vstrom from springfield MO to Dallas Texas! It was amazing riding this motorcycle all over the dirt roads, high ways and everything in between. I have had a Versys, NC700, KLR and even a 1200 sportster (dont ask why, regret buying it) and the Vstrom has been the absolute BEST!!
I wish I could post a pic of her! I think she is a bit bland when kept stock and windscreen sucks, BUT mine is upgraded with new hard cases, crash bars, front lights, and tall tinted windscreen.... with these upgrades she becomes one of the best motorcycles ever created.
OF COURSE I want a GS 800-1200 ... but have fun spending 10k-15k. I bought my with 30k miles for 3100$ (talked him down a bit).
You have me as a new subscriber for sure!!!

That's a tough one since there are so many factors that play into fuel mileage. Sounds like you've got got a couple of them covered already tho. If you are doing a lot of in town riding 200 is going to be close to expected. You could try using a fuel system cleaner to see if that helps. I use Berryman's B12, works magic and is pretty cheap. Its like Seafoam but better IMO. Check tire pressure maybe? Are you using standard sprocket gearing? Are you an aggressive rider?

Awesome! Congratulations!!! The seat I have was custom made at Mr Ed's Moto in Albany OR, you can see the vid here czcams.com/video/_Ydnts9lP48/video.html
I don't think it came out any lower but it is definitely more comfortable! My wife's Strom has a Sargent seat and it seems lower and more comfortable than the stock seat.
Mr Ed's charged me $500.00 to do a one of a kind, custom, hand crafted work of art, the Sargent seat (new) runs between $400.00 and $530.00.

I think he his beautiful as well! I have always put premium ethanol free gas in all my bikes! If a person is traveling and is going to burn strait through a tank they can probably get away with it but I've never tried it. I guess the way I see it is that ya cant use all of the gas in the tank therefore some ethanol will remain and get mixed in with the next tank. I really don't know how many tanks it would take to get rid of it all. That's my thoughts anyway! We gotta go get coffee sometime!

10% ethanol fuel should be safe for a fuel injected bike but should never be run through a carbed bike. As far as I know there are two issues.
A: Ethanol fuel will go bad faster, like say after 6 months instead of a year with regular fuel, but if your storing it you should be putting sta-bil in anyways. I always run cheap ethanol mix gas in my sv 650 and then put a tank of ethanol free in with sta-bil before putting it up for the winter, and I have had no problems.
B: The ethanol is more volatile and can evaporate and allow water into the fuel lines somehow, and the water can freeze and damage lines, or possibly cause the tank to rust. I am unsure of the specifics on this but I have heard 10% ethanol gas somehow gets water into the fuel.

You know it's funny... I never looked in the direction of the vstrom ...ever. I was not a fan of it, it's just not a bike I ever saw myself having... Fast forward 10 years of riding... I'm now looking at a 650 vstrom which to some people seems mental considering my current bike is a Tracer 900 GT but I'm honestly considering trading it for a 650 XT. The looks, engine, design, even the colours are right up my street. My commute is less than 10 miles a day... I need something economical that will still sit comfortably at motorway speeds, tour Europe and my home country of Scotland and I genuinely think that's it. The engine is a proven engine. It's been improved and refined over some 22 years.

I think it interesting that in the real world people like Vstroms. In my riding group of aprox. 25 riders
5 or 6 will be riding Vstrom 650's. No other bike comes near those numbers. I agree with all your like comments but do not find here (in New Zealand) the bike is looked down on at all. The brakes - all I can say is on a recent riding course I did the two Vstrom's performed way better doing emergency stops.
Now a question what sort of tyres are you using?
I want to do more of that sort of riding but the on road Bridgestones are not at their best on gravel.

When people say so your riding a Suzuki DL650. Yes the v-strom is one of the most reliable bikes out there, but don't tell everyone or the prices will go up. a much better bike than the BMW F650.😏

    • @mainstreammoto4856
      @mainstreammoto4856  Před rokem +1

I upgraded to progressive springs in the front and the progressive 465 shock for the rear. Its not as smooth of ride for the pavement but I prefer it. My kids call it the bumpy bike. Pros. Feels better off road and in the corners, handles luggage and a passenger better. Cons. Bumpy ride, can cause problems with the kickstand length since the bike sits taller. I had to make a custom bracket to lower the kickstand an inch and a half. Lengthening the kickstand didn't work because it interfered with the center stand. Upgrading the fork spring makes a more noticeable difference then the rear and is a lot cheaper. I think I paid around $110.00 for the fork springs and around $640.00 for the 465 shock.

Well, not really. My own self esteem isn't the issue. It's more like having a friend that people talk bad about even tho you know that your friend has very good qualities. They are unaware of the good qualities because they haven't given them a chance due to where they were born, their skin color or status. It gets old having to regularly defend a bike that is on par or better than bikes that are highly praised... I think some bikes are ugly too, but I would never tell the owner. If they like it, that's all that matters! Nor would I come to conclusions about it's capability before I spent a appropriate amount of time on it. Nor would I judge it on looks alone. Some people have to belittle something in their ignorance to make them feel they have something special. This bike is not the only great bike out there! I like ALL bikes, even if they are not my kind of thing or they don't suit my needs! I don't piss all over someones bike to make myself feel better about mine! Is it too much to ask that others do the same? I have low self esteem? ...why would I??
