    Mine is a 2009, bright orange beautiful color, bought it new and now have 34,000 miles of trouble free riding. Uses 87 regular gas, consistently gets 55 miles per gallon and easily 300 miles per tank, still on the original front and rear brake pads, still on the originalchain and sprocket, run Michelin Anakee 3 tires and consistently 10,000 miles from a set, never a problem. Haven’t even touched the valves yet, starts right up and runs and shifts very smooth. Has the MadStad windshield mount with a tall touring screen, also dropped the pegs with a lowering kit as I am 6’2”. I also sit on an air hawk air cushion seat which totally eliminates the seat vibration

      Excellent choice! I have a 2012 650 with 5500 miles on it. I love this bike. Nice and quiet, but a pleasant rumble when drifting down a hill in town. It's not a good looking, strong attention grabber in town, but the headlights get enough attention to where no one has pulled out in front of me yet. Commuting I get around 60 MPG at speeds averaging 45-55 MPH. I've traveled on wildlife management areas and braved a few muddy roads for off roading. I will get rid of the street tires before any more mud. The only malfunction I've heard of is a stator going bad, but not for me yet. I have added practical additions, including a 16 tooth sprocket up front, but other than that, nothing. I feel the same way that you do: every time I look to replace I find that I cannot justify doing it. The only option seems to be a 2nd bike. Great, honest review.

      @MrBenHaynes Před 3 lety +1

      My experience with 16 tooth front sprocket is lowered revs by 400rpm @ 100kph, taking it further away from the fat torque zone.
      It also got worse fuel economy as the engine was labouring more and further from it's most efficient operating band.
      It would only work if you were sustaining high speeds (120kph and above) for long periods on flat terrain. Cheers.

      @hermanboing8489 Před 3 lety +2

      @@MrBenHaynes HI Ben and thanks for your reply. I would agree, but I've found that rather than losing the torque curve, it has changed it a bit, putting a bit higher in the rpm. I live in a big city and spend an inordinate amount of time getting out of it using four lane highways. The sixth gear helps. The biggest difference has been in first gear. It's probably psychological, but I always felt the engine was a bit busy over seventy mph. Happy riding!

    Nice video. After viewing many like this and reading numerous reviews, I bought a new 2017 Vstrom 650 XT and love the bike. It's my fourth bike -I still have 3 including the new Strom. It's by far my favorite street bike (I also have a dirt bike). The power surprised me, very quick for it's engine size and weight. And the handling is just excellent. I have to ride 5 miles on gravel roads to hit pavement and the Strom just eats it up. I do plan on replacing the factory tires with something more aggressive - probably the new Dunlop TrailMax Mission. I am amazed at how well both the ABS and the traction control systems work. Excellent review. The front forks are preload adjustable on this model (not so on the current iteration).
    I find a MRA VarioScreen spoiler just the ticket for resolving buffeting issues. The stock screen has three height adjustments for the seasons.
    (I've tried madstad brackets and monster Givi screens)
    The best value addition would by far and away be a set of Oxford brand "Hot Grips". Pure Bliss!
    Bang on all rounder, it's a gem of a motorcycle for those not into "social climbing" 😅
    It's so reliable and frugal that I leave the valve adjustments, tyre/chain/sprocket replacement to the bike shop (completed with annual registration inspection).
    I am keeping mine because I prefer the "dated" dash to the LCD screens that are busy and difficult to read in sunlight.
    A lot of bikes in this category now come with restricted outputs to comply with learner (A2?) requirements, making this model even more attractive.

    • @RichRides

      Thanks for the comment and all the info that will be really useful for others. As well as the normal screen, I used a Givi touring screen which I found great with my height and helmet combo. Have the same bike for over 3 years now and am absolutely satisfied with my choice. The engine is bulletproof as the other parts too. Had no issues in 14.000 kms. I am a weekend rider doing mostly daily tours btwn 100 and 300 kms in the Bavarian hills and the Alps, and the bike is just perfect for what I do. As I am 6'4" (1.96 m) I find the screen a little bit smaller than I would need, but I had bikes with much worse aerodynamics too. Of course my friends' very first question was why I did not pick a big GS or the like, but, hey, what for? This bike perfectly matches my riding abilities (I am 51), and I do admit that I am not and will not be the best rider around therefore I don't think I would be happier with 150+ bhp. I ride 90% quiet and twisty B roads and no motorways wherever I go. The bike is just perfect for that. Fuel economy is excellent. Great comfort. Classy V2 engine with tons of torque. Would be just silly to spend twice or three times the money for sthg "better" whereas the "adventure factor" would barely change. I love the "ride and hike" style of touring, I take photos, I go for a long walk wherever I happen to take a break, and I really enjoy a cup of Italian coffee in a small town my bike standind at the corner.That's what I'm telling people. Don't buy an expensive GS but, instead, see more of and enjoy the world and have fun with a reasonable adventure bike. In this case less is much more. Long live the V-Strom experience. Cheers from Germany.

    Nice review, any observations about this bike in wet and muddy road conditions? I’m considering it as a second bike for tackling country lanes which are unavoidable where I live, and are often covered in a layer of mud (sometimes mixed with manure!) which is a particular problem when the road is also wet. Anyone experienced this, and with what tyres? Been looking at Battlax AX41 tyres but the knob Les might be more suited to deeper mud they can dig into than a thin layer on tarmac, and road tyres designed for the wet are presumably designed to drive out water and stick to the road, rather than a liquid mud & water mixture.

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Justin. I've used it in the wet with no issues and as I ride the country lanes near home and North Yorkshire with similar wet mud during winter I know what you mean. You obviously have to be extra careful but never had any big problems. I think knobblies would be worse on road (better off road) that more road focused tyres though. I was using Battlax Adventure A40's (I think the A41 is just a new version) which I do recommend for everything. Gripped well in all weather and even lasted well too.

      Justin, their weight and top heavy distribution don't make them suitable for such conditions. I ride with Metzeler Tourances and battle through. My experience with Continental TKC 80's is vastly improved but they only get a third of the lifespan compared to the Tourances. Continental now make a TKC 70 Rocks (which might be a better compromise)

The main issues with bikes sat for long periods (but way more than a few months) is rubber things perishing (fork seals, shock mounts etc) and metal things (like chains) rusting. Other things to check are inside the fuel tank for rust (I'd drain the tank and refill with new petrol as it doesn't last well) and the age/condition of the tyres too.

    Absolutely NOT a "dual sport". I bought this identical bike....it is very nice on the street but in the dirt it is plain scary! Once tired if you go down it can be almost impossible to pick it back up by yourself depending on your physical condition ....you might argue the point but if the bike goes down on a hill? You better hope you have help! It's WAY WAY WAY more a touring bike and barely dirt worthy and then only on hard packed dry ....sand is MURDER.

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes I wouldn't fancy riding in sand on anything other than a full on dirt bike myself! For me the definition of an adventure bike is something that can do some more serious off road and a dual sport is more road focused but can handle some light off road. I think the labels and lines between all these things are very blurred these days :)

    • @dougiequick1
      @dougiequick1 Před 5 lety +2

      @@RichRides It is just abuse of the term to start calling large street biased motorcycles "dual sport" ....here is a litmus test for anyone familiar with Motocross ....if you can not comfortably safely reasonably ride a motorcycle around a full on typical motocross track ? then you are not on a real "dual sport" motorcycle ....And yes a really good rider might be able to get even a cruiser or sport bike around certain milder MX tracks but they would of course know that we're performing a stunt as opposed to riding something that was naturally easy to circulate the track on....not saying that even a true DS bike would be particularly good at it (although SOME dual sports you could actually even race and beat a bunch of riders on if you are good) .... it would be the difference between people seeing it either saying "well THAT is just assinine" as opposed to simply..."okay it goes around the track fine but WHY ? What the this guy does not have a truck and money for a real race bike?"
      I feel that the ONLY reason the "lines are blurred" is because people keep abusing the terms. Dual Sport and Adventure are distinct categories where the only time it gets blurred is the legitimate use of a dual sport as their adventure bike .But no reasonable person is ever going to deliberately choose a street biased bike like a Vstrom to do rough single track etc. A really good Rider might do it as a challenge to show off his skill or whatever but is not going to straight faced claim it was any kind of good choice.
      I personally own an 08 DL650 and a Honda XR650L .....I COULD ride the XR anywhere I can the DL but NOT vice versa! The DL is a PIG of a motorcycle offroad! If it is not a bonafide maintained dirt ROAD that most cars could traverse then it is going to an Iffy scary proposition to ride the Suzuki on. Having said all this, I will take my Vstrom over the XR every single time if it is mostly highway with just some reasonable dirt roads included ....like 80/20 and a long ride? The Vstrom every time because it is so much more pleasant to ride on the highway! So comfortable for many hours in the saddle....just a joy! The XR on the highway is a chore after a short time, heat pours off the air-cooled motor and there is a lot of tire and chain noise and quick stops are harrowing compared to the Suzuki...I only take it when I NEED IT ...I need it whenever there is mostly dirt road or especially when it will be rough at all.
      But hey for you guys that want to insist on abusing the term "dual sport" by including 500llb heavily street biased motorcycles? Well its a free atmosphere to say practically anything ...but it just comes across as pretty ignorant if you ask me ....it annoys me enough to respond. And hey find me ANY motorcycle publication that is calling the Vstrom "dual sport" Or calling ANY large heavy multi cylinder motorcycle "dual sport" for that matter

With the right tires, I would take my '09 Wee on packed gravel logging roads and dirt roads if it is not muddy. Even the Beemer GS bikes are dicey off road if the surface is slick with mud or full of boulders and ruts. Most of the ADV bikes that are built for packed touring are too heavy to be good for technical stuff. So, in that, the V-strom is in good company.
      As for picking up a DL650, I use the BMW method and don't have any problems. Engage the front brake by slipping a glove over it or something, turn the bars so the tire is pointing to the sky, step in close, bend at the knees, grab the lower bar END with both hands and lift in a smooth motion. Yeah, it's a grunt if the bike is on a down slope, but it's way easier than any other way. My 63 year old bad back can testify under penalty of pain that this works best.
      All said, I can't find a single disqualifier in the V-Strom. Pretty much bomb proof and easy to own. The only thig I changed was the 15 tooth sprocket in front to a 16 tooth. Makes a lot of difference on the hi-way and is not a deficit from a dead stop because the motor has ample torque. Like having a 7th gear.

    For a 650 "Dual Sport" ? The Suzuki DR 650 or Honda XR650L ...border line the KLR650...KTM 690...but NOT the DL650! NOT the Vstrom ...sorry it just does get that status. DL is a wonderful fun motorcycle just keep it out of anything at all loose and rough or else tremble!

      I agree. Great bike, but not for off road.

      Also agree can easily handle a dirt road and even a bit of rutting but nothing more adventurous than that.

    This dude spends more time checking the mirrors than looking forward, kinda annoying from the camera view

    I have a 06 1000. Lot bigger and heavier then the 650 ( which my partner had ). Lot more torque and faster, but saying that I find the 650 a lot lighter and flick able, plenty of power, easier through the corners and comfortable. The 1000 more roomy for 2 up, but the 650 is plenty of bike as an all rounder.

      A friend changed from the 650 to the 1000 and actually preferred the 650 (they only ride solo) because of the weight and handling.
