It's beautiful isn't it growing old together when done right, doesn't mean it was easy or always happy but they are a success in my book. My parents were together for around 18 years but married for 13, and divorced that year, my in laws have been married for a little over 37 years. I see them struggle with one another sometimes, but I also see a lot of love and hard work they've put into their relationship.

I'm 47 and met my soulmate 3 years ago who's 55. We're an interracial intercultural, and for a time, international married couple in a small city in Iowa. We get lots of stares yes, because of how we look but mostly because we are constantly laughing and treating each other with deep love and respect. It's the first time either of us have ever been truly happy as it's both of our second marriage and first interracial relationship. All I can say is when it's there it's there, no matter the skin color, location, or cultural differences.

I've been in an interracial relationship and marriage for the past 26 years. Frankly, I don't really look at it that way, in those terms. My wife is Chinese, born in the Mainland, and arriving in NYC around 30 years ago. Sometimes we have communication problems because her Englis has not improved an iota since we got together. Don't ask about my Chinese- I couldn't do it- forget the phrases no sooner than I learned them. Sometimes it's frustrating. She watches nothing but Chinese television; I nothing but English language television. So we miss out on sharing important things. But she is my life. She filled what was an empty one and though I still balk at some of the ways she fills it, that's just the way it is. I suppose I've grown as a social being over the decades as a result of moving into an immigrant neighborhood for her.

You have to keep things in perspective. There was still a strong attitude against interracial marriage even in the 1980s when they married (and still for many people today). Before 1967, interracial marriage was illegal in 16 states in the USA. 16 states!! That's in my lifetime!

Such a neat interview. My wife and I will celebrate being together just a little over half of the time that this couple has been together (she is black, I am white) at the end of May. I know that a lot can happen but I definitely see us being much like this another 18 years down the road. I consider her my best friend. She was (and still is) drop-dead gorgeous; she is the funny, laughing, goofy, very expressive type whereas I am the stoic who finds it very difficult to show very much emotion and I think I was attracted to her opposite personality - I wanted to be as free as she is. After 25 years together, I would be lost without her. Hopefully, we both are given enough time to make it as long as this couple, or longer.
My grandma and grandpa were an interracial couple. My grandma was German and my grandpa was Creole. My grandpa knew Dr. King and marched in the Million Man March and my grandma went with him. She was just as down for the cause as he was. She even went to a Black Panther meeting with him and when they turned her away because she was white, my grandpa quit going. If they weren't down with his wife then he wasn't down with them. Love knows no limits and their story was so inspirational to me. I only hope to find a love like that one day. Half of my grandma's family disowned her for marrying a black man, but she didn't care. She was gonna love her man regardless of who didn't like it. Makes me cry whenever I think about it â„ïž
I often wonder about groups that exclude others because of difference, they are missing so much. As an older interracial married person I am sure your grandparents enjoyed a richer relationship because of their differences. The most profound thing that stuck with me is when she talked about their parents dying. Growing older and having to watch the people in your family die before you. Your parents, older siblings...etc. Supporting another person through all of this is some deep real life shit. but like when people say they dont see colour they dont literally mean that they dont see the visual difference. they mean they dont see it as a differenciating factor in our humanity. of course there will be differences. cultural differences have very little to do with race tho. race can be an important topic when discussing culture but no matter the origin of your dna, it is the culture and society that you are in that shapes you as a person, while race is only a small factor and the outcome of it will be different depending on, once again your surroundings. i mean no disrespect, just as a person whom until recently used this phrase, i just need to clarify how, at the very least i understood it, and meant it :)

So beautiful and REAL. A real relationship has struggles, frustrations, hardships and sometimes just simple gripes too. But it's about how you get through all those, the little bumps and the big hurdles together, that makes the biggest difference. It's not always pretty, sweet, loving and easy, but it's worth it.
