      This is just shy of giving kudos to someone for being a decent normal human. That typed, yeah.
      Most people, in the public eye or not, don't seem to behave like normal decent humans. A good aspect of this is that it informs people (behaving as sheeple) who follow him.
      I can't count the number of times I've been waylaid by a group of "fans" (behaving in an unhealthy manner, to put it kindly) for critiquing something someone said or did... or just having a different opinion (than that of someone they idolize). It's not kosher. As an aside, never be an apologist, feel the need to attack someone else for having a different perspective (unless it's a take over the world type of perspective) or, well, idolize anyone. Be well and kind.

      @@danielklos1100% disagree. Let's say your analysis of Marc was bang on though; all it would mean is that he's a consistent person who is likely giving his genuine and honest analysis. Like, how can you say that another man's opinion or tastes are wrong? You can say you disagree with his take, but he's not wrong and obviously Kevin believes that Marc is genuine and holds Marc's insisghts in high esteem because Marc used to tear some of Kevin's work to shreds in the L.A. Times but there were always those moments in Kevin's work that Marc absolutely loved or the entire films that he loved from Kevin.
      We've got to get past trashing someone because they have their own insights into what amounts to meaningless trivial nonsense at the end of the day. If a person comes up to you and says that killing people is ok then yea, trash that person and call him wrong. If a man comes up to you and says, "I didn't like a thing and let me tell you why", why trash him or treat his opinion as worthless and less than yours? How can you expect other people to respect your own insights and opinions and to take them seriously when you yourself refuse to offer the same treatment to anyone who dares to disagree with you in return?

I seen something about McDonald's, I assume you used McDonald's to make a strawman argument or some comparison that in of itself has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion? Doesn't matter, the point is you in fact did call his opinions wrong. As I said above, why should anyone else offer your thoughts, analysis, and words any credit or respect when you yourself refuse to offer the same in return? That's the point and apparently, as you seem to do with Marc's words, you avoided it completely.

It was an attempt to make a strawman argument by using McDonald's in a ridiculous comparison that had absolutely nothing to do with anything said here.

    One thing a lot of people forget about movies that use time travel is that it's something that _doesn't actually exists._ It's ultimately just a science fiction/fantasy concept and therefore, writers and storytellers should be allowed free reign to invent whatever time travel "rules" they want.
    If a movie wants to say that altering a timeline results in changes both in the future _and_ in the past, I'm happy to go along with it... just so long as they stay internally consist with their own rules.

    • @darksaint0124
      @darksaint0124 Před rokem

      The problem is that they aren't internally consistent with their rules, they are making them up as they go along. The thing about franchises with source material is that there is a basis for how these things are supposed to work, but Hollywood writers have a tendency to try and recreate the wheel. I personally don't like Endgame, because fundamentally it isn't a Marvel story. They cannot tell that story in the comics because things don't work like that. And then after Endgame, the MCU had to continuously put in fixes to the narrative retroactively so any of it makes sense.

    • @shelbyvillerules9962
      @shelbyvillerules9962 Před rokem +1

      @@darksaint0124 But why can’t the comic books and the movies be their own separate entities?

    • @darksaint0124
      @darksaint0124 Před rokem

      @@shelbyvillerules9962 If they wanted to do that they would have gone the Star Wars route. Instead they keep going to the comics for storylines to butcher. In case you haven't noticed Hollywood isn't exactly a bastion of creativity and new ideas. Most big budget movies are either established franchises or something they took out of the vault that has a fan base that they think they can exploit. At the end of the day the point is to make money, and the more these studios cannibalize stories that people originally liked, the more they lose money. There are things about Flashpoint that I really like, but those are few and far between. If you're going to adapt the story, then adapt the story and stop trying to make up things that make no sense. Personally, I feel like DC has never made it to a point where they had the basics of their universe setup. Marvel is very much the same, but we know why Marvel is in that situation, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. DC owns all of their stuff, so they can't make that same excuse.

    Blows my mind that Mark does not understand the timeline explanation. It's spelled out very clearly in the movie. The flash movie doesn't use back to the future type time travel. Changing an event doesn't simply change events going forward, it creates a sort of pivot point that changes events before and after, all around the event you changed. Not sure how you could watch the film 4 times and miss that.

The themes of loss and "what if" were really well done and paced. It could have been a trainwreck of Batman '89 references and I was very happy it was a focused story that kept going forward. Even if it stands on its own outside whatever the DCU becomes I was still fully entertained. P.S. I didn't like any of the Snyderverse movies, so there ya go.

    @ 51:12, That's the whole plot of the movie! Barry THINKS that, because of the Butterfly Effect, he can't have too much interaction with that past, because it would change too much. Like Affleck warns him, he doesn't know for sure what effects saving his mom could have on the rest of the world. But like Keaton explains, ANY change to the past goes both ways. It has nothing to do with WHAT was changed. He specifically says that anyone stupid enough to change the past could create a giant mess of noodles crossing and diverging. Some universes running parallel is some parts, while others being vastly different. The change that Barry makes has no affect on the differences between this new universe and Barry's original timeline. The change just puts him on a completely different noodle. But the true irony is that Barry never actually learns this lesson, because he still changes the past by moving the can of tomatoes. Which is why Clooney shows up. Implying that he is on a new noodle, now.

  • @reflectionist
    @reflectionist Před rokem +4

    I agree with Marc about a lot of his criticisms of the Flash, but at the same time, I wonder if those criticisms come from a place of the film "assuming" that the audience has a certain level of familiarity going in, and taking advantage of that as a means of not really trying to explain a whole hell of a lot... this is actually a wildly interesting topic, ESPECIALLY when it comes to superhero movies.
    The movies don't necessarily have to be well-oiled profound narratives with efficient and watertight plots if you're writing for an audience of super nerds that regularly peppers in phrases like, "Because you and me, we're from the streets."
    And if I can use my pre-existing knowledge of these characters, themes, and story beats to fill what are clearly some significant plot-holes in a movie, that's generally considered to be bad writing. And you also want to market for the audience that's been living under a rock for fifty years so that THEY don't get lost in the sauce trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. Imagine watching this movie and having NO IDEA that there was going to be a Superman movie in the late 90s directed by Tim Burton, starring Nicholas Cage... At THAT point, I'd be like, "Are these assholes fucking with us right now?."
    That's why Batman's parents have died like... nine times in live-action media in the last thirty years.
    Do we really need to see that happen YET again?
    It's why Batman V Superman wasn't even the most faithful live-action adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns to come out the entire year of 2016. And The Flash has the exact same problem as Batman V Superman does -- It's trying to force character beats and moments onto characters who just aren't THERE yet. So when Marc talks about how it's bullshit that Barry going back in time to save his mother somehow means that Superman (who would've been on earth for thirty-three years at this point) never existed in this universe... You're absolutely right, because Henry Cavill is significantly older than Ezra Miller, it's wildly incredulous.
    That's a Year 20 Batman vs. a Year 3 Superman. The FIGHT in The Dark Knight Returns wasn't about "Hey, you're an alien!" "Hey, you're an asshole!" it was ABOUT... the Sokovia Accords. Men who have known each other for DECADES - A political liability vs the President's personal lapdog. Much like Steve and Tony, Clark and Bruce have WILDLY differing ideas about what it means to be held accountable.
    ---
    TL;DR - Marc, if you check out the animated DC feature, "The Flashpoint Paradox," even it's a HEAVILY abridged version of the comics event that kicked off the New 52. It's not perfect, but it does address a lot of these criticisms. Namely in the fact that you can clearly see where DC was trying to adapt this storyline, but then they couldn't get THAT actor, so they changed the character, and they couldn't get THAT actor, so they changed the character.... etc.
    And why Sasha Calle and Michael Keaton ARE in this movie. They couldn't get Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and fans would have freaked the fuck out if they hired Michael Keaton to play THOMAS Wayne. Henry Cavill couldn't care less, Christian Bale wouldn't touch a shared universe if you paid him by signing over the deed to Fort Knox.
    This movie was never supposed to be something that could financially justify including a large-scale war between Atlantis and Themyscira as the backdrop for this little adventure.

    I like the part where Barry shows Barry the little bag of laughs he found. For some reas, Bruce Wayne retrieved and kept the Joker's little bag of laughs we saw Gordon take out of the Joker's coat pocket at the end of Batman '89. Why would he do that? I think he kept it as a reminder that killing the man who killed his parents didn't make him feel better or bring them back. Revenge didn't get him even, it only made him feel more empty. So he kept that little bag of laughs, and every time he needed a reminder of why he does what he does, he'd look at it. Batman's quest should be for justice, not revenge, and killing your enemies isn't justice. It only makes you more like them. I imagine he had to remind himself of that moral lesson often.

    I can usually see where Marc's coming from with his criticisms and for the most part can here too, but he seemed to miss the spaghetti explanation despite shrugging it off while talking about it. Barry's mother surviving didn't necessarily change Superman's trajectory in that timeline, it's that it was a completely different timeline at its core. To go back in time snaps Barry's original strand of "spaghetti" and places him in a different strand of "spaghetti". It isn't just the one act of placing the can of tomatoes in the cart and having Barry's mother live that warps the entire series of events, it was always a different series of events all together that Barry naively placed himself into. That's why he was warned not to try it - because he, on a surface level, misunderstood the rules of time travel (in the DC universe). It's why placing the can of tomatoes on the top shelf so his father's face appears on camera ultimately stuck Barry in yet ANOTHER strand of "spaghetti" that was different than his original, as we see that the store footage is different and, of course, the Bruce Wayne who knows Barry is obviously different as well. The movie ultimately shows us that there's no easy "out" for messing with time travel, and as Bruce (Affleck) warned at the beginning of the movie, it'd be extremely dangerous to attempt.
    All that said, I can agree with most of his other criticisms, especially Barry not caring about who actually killed his mother in THIS movie (as opposed to the never-coming sequel).

      A lot goes over his head and it's odd, but yeah he tends to criticize things he clearly didn't understand that made perfect sense for myself and others.

      @@Axolotl_Mischief I dunno, I don't usually feel like he misunderstands most things he criticizes. Like I said, I can usually see where he's coming from even if I don't entirely agree. Honestly the only reason I commented is because I noticed he may have misunderstood the spaghetti metaphor and I'm not used to him missing blatant info like that.

      I never bumped into Barry not being interested in who the killer was. He was just much more focused on saving his mum or clearing his dad's name.
      Far as I could tell he had nothing to go on and interfering further to find out or change events was to risk dire consequences, going back to his attempt to make the smallest possible change and not risk destroying the universe.

    I personally enjoyed The Flash. I'm definitely going to see it again cause I don't wanna wait for streaming and Blu-ray. Same as Kevin I was mainly going to see Keaton and I could've used more Supergirl. Calle was killer in that role, being said god bless Henry Cavill. 🙏

    I love how Kevin supports the DCEU. He never sounds like hes defending it for no reason. He perfectly lays out what he loves about the movies and he doesnt ever, EVER claim that his opinion of it or enjoyment of it is the CORRECT OPINION.

      Agree he just happens to be friends with Ben Affleck and what’s wrong with that? He’s a shill for comic book shit, when he cries watching trailers or describing pivotal and seminal moments in comic movie, ifeel that! He’s passion and emotion rants, I share the same sentiments!
