Gauld’s is a great story and shows how if you want to make it to the top you have got to be resilient. Being hyped up at an early age could easily of gone to Ryan’s head which could of crushed him when he got released by Sporting but instead he got his head down and was humble enough to go down a level so he could show what he is about. It just goes to show the mental side of the game is just as significant as technique and physical prowess.

I'm obviously biased as an American and MLS supporter.. but I do have to say one of the best things about "soccer" here in the US is that we don't mind older players if they are performing. At 27, 28.. Gauld would probably be completely left behind by most European clubs as those older signings are exceptions, not the standard. They likely consider his prime right now, or even a few years back, rather than potentially ahead of him. Old Firm wanted him at 25, would they still want him, objectively a better player, at 30? South Americans and Europeans who get dropped by their academies or don't quite develop quick enough get another chance here in the US to play for longer and develop as some are just late bloomers. Take Jack Harrison for example. Now at Everton, could have very well stopped playing altogether when he got dropped by the Man U academy. Hell MLS all time leading goalscorer Chris Wondolowski didn't get to the 'Quakes until he was 26, where he then went on to score 167 goals and retire a USMNT player, well paid, respected, veteran at the age of 38.
Could have been a top top player but left Dundee utd a season or 2 too early, still ended up a good player with a few good years still left in him but I thought he would have played at the very very top with a Liverpool, an arsenal or a big euro team. Would love to see him capped though as he's good enough and deserves that recognition.
Compared to other “Messi clones” like Hachim Mastour, Freddy Adu, and Alen Halilovic, Gauld has had a pretty solid career and is currently one of the best players in MLS. He’s been a continual starter and top player for pretty much every team he’s played for so far.

One of the biggest talents I have seen to fail miserably and destroy their career was undoubtedly Anas Sharbini. Many players, and coaches also dubbed him as the next big thing while in Ryan's age up to until when he was 22 - 23. The dude had the potential to be next Zvonimir Boban, and in the Modric's potential range, and now he is playing in the fifth Croatian league. Anyone who played football manager 2007 - 2010 will probably remember him as a beast. And, btw....the reason why Halilovic's career went downhill was his father. You can research that story if you wish so.
Despite the fact that Gauld's career in Sporting didn't pan out in the way that it should've of, he would go on to prove his worth in Farense. He suffered relegation with them in the same season that we ended our 19 year league title drought but Gauld was truly exceptional in Algarve and it's just a damn shame that his time there just happened to be at a club that played better than what their results would suggest (Most teams in Liga Nos were only able to beat Farense by the skin of their teeth). I feel like Jorge Jesus' time at the club was the main contributing factor to him leaving the club as opposed to his lack of first team opportunities since he's always been a manager that prioritizes established players over young talents so that didn't help matters. A lot of young talented players during Jesus' time at the club were frequently loaned out to other clubs in the league (Palhinha, Podence and Francisco Geraldes, etc) so it was no wonder that Gauld would eventually see himself enter "loan hell" until he left. Gauld leaving Britian to escape the toxic tabloid culture should've helped him focus on his game more but unfortunately Portugal is a country that also has a tabloid culture that overinflates the value of youngsters and heavily scrutinizes them if they don't perform to standard (especially if you're a Sporting, Benfica or Porto player). Ryan Gauld is a great "what-if" story because ultimately it was a mixture of poor man-management, unfortunate timing and bad luck that caused him to not reach the potential that he had
The video doesn't give Ryan Gauld enough credit for his play for the Whitecaps, as he has been one of the best players in the MLS, not just the Caps. More than a few pundits voiced their displeasure when he wasn't a finalist for league MVP this year. Not sure how serious this is, but there's been some chatter about Gauld getting Canadian citizenship so he can join the Canadian national team. While the video highlights his abilities with the ball at his feet, his greatest attribute could be his work rate. He's tireless in the press with his strike partner, Brian White, and he willingly tracks back to help the midfield and back line.
Genuinely surprised Scotland havent capped him. Its not like theyre bursting with superstars. If Billy Gilmour get games so why cant Gauld? Its weird. Reminds me a bit of Wes Hoolahan for Ireland. It tooks ages for us to cap him even tho lots of Irish football fans knew he was a classy footballer. However due to his strange career path, height and style a lot of international managers wouldnt risk playin him in games, or even call him up to squads.. I dont get that mentality. Especially as we were average anyway so whats the harm in calling him up? Whats the risk? Scotland should play Gauld. Give him a chance to show what he can do.
Would love to see him in the Scotland squad I don’t think Steve Clark has forgotten about him I think it’s just now there is too much competition in our squad for that attacking midfield position, I’m pretty sure if he was an out rite no9 or no11 he had no problem getting in
Think mls defences are the issue for Clark. Pretty weak so the change in level to international is huge. He's talented enough but not getting tested enough in mls imo
Never heard of this kid....I'm enjoying this video (half way through) and wondering whats gonna happen to him (Edit) looks like that move to portugal was a disaster...went from first team in Scotland to development football..shame...but glad to see he's back happy and playing in Canada
I cannot understand why Gauld has not been chosen to play for Scotland. He is simply brilliant - but unfortunately sometimes even the brilliant can be overlooked.

Bruno Cheyrou was the new "Zidane". Probably better than his time at Liverpool ever demonstrated, but another of those players whose closest connection to the person they're meant to emulate is their hairline.
Interesting thing is that in Football Manager 2005 ( at least no-patched version); Freddy Adu and Bojan Krkic were the best talents in the game. And Messi was awful. He he was still not considered a wonderkid. Even he was older than both Adu and Krkic, 2 and 3 years respectively
Putting that tag of The Scottish Messi wasnt the best way to start his career. He was unbelievable but that pressure can kill a guys career before its had time to begin. He was s decent player but overhyped like That kid From.Ranhers who was dubbed the Scottish Rooney Sheffield utd he ended up playing for Cant remember his name but you see where this is going. Neil McCann the poor mans Ryan Giggs 😂
Coming from a Sporting fan really wanted to have seen him blossom there... really liked him, and had really high hopes for him... but he never proved to have much resilience or a true will to play... although I somewhat always thought he should have had more of a chance... he kinda always gave off a vibe of being too soft... glad to see he found his level in Canada... all the best to him
@@henrymcvey6538 Mindset is a talent as well though. Just like being able to work hard is. People often say hard work beats talent, but tend to forget that working hard is a talent
Be a naturalised Canadian in about a year I think. Hopefully, the Canadians wont be as stupid as us and get him capped. Should be getting a shot on the international stage.

You can research that story if you wish so.
He’s doing great. Enjoying his football and making a living. Fair play
Fair play to the lad
@douglasbertram8592 Scotland squad, too much competition??? yeah we’re blessed with an abundance of attacking midfield talent😂😂😂…
THATS MY PLAYER. MY CAPTIAN.
William, Joao Mario and Adrien were only Portugal's Euro 2016 european champion midfield
I’ve not heard of him for a while I thought he had packed it in how old is he now ?
Only 27
Never heard of this kid....I'm enjoying this video (half way through) and wondering whats gonna happen to him
(Edit) looks like that move to portugal was a disaster...went from first team in Scotland to development football..shame...but glad to see he's back happy and playing in Canada
Still think of John Greens nickname for him, “The Gaulden child”
He didnt play for dundee, thats a seperate club that is arch rivals to Dundee United
sounds like he's doing well for himself. playing football and being happy where he is
I cannot understand why Gauld has not been chosen to play for Scotland. He is simply brilliant - but unfortunately sometimes even the brilliant can be overlooked.
Personally he should have gone to brighton. They have done so well with their youth players
Edit - that's not Anthony Stokes, that's some balding guy..
Wow , what a story. Souinds like he really doesn't like intrusive pressure and is happy earning good money enjoying his football. You can see that as a mental weakness or a kid who just knows what he wants out of life. Good luck anyway! : )
Ryan gauld he goes where he wants 😂
This guy is a success. He makes 2.5 mil a year. More than what many will make in a lifetime.
I always buy him for my PES teams
Bruno Cheyrou was the new "Zidane". Probably better than his time at Liverpool ever demonstrated, but another of those players whose closest connection to the person they're meant to emulate is their hairline.
Love watching this guy in Vancouver. He's sick.
An upgrade to Christie, Armstrong and McLean... Get him in the Squad!!!
Never heard of him.
If you choose canada over the auld firm then I think that says it all
I remember waiting for fifa to come to just sign him in career mode
Stevie doesn't rate him good enough for Scotland , in 2025 he'll be eligible to start playing for Canada .
Like who wants him he’s happy doing well good on him
Interesting thing is that in Football Manager 2005 ( at least no-patched version); Freddy Adu and Bojan Krkic were the best talents in the game.
He was s decent player but overhyped like That kid From.Ranhers who was dubbed the Scottish Rooney
Sheffield utd he ended up playing for
Cant remember his name but you see where this is going. Neil McCann the poor mans Ryan Giggs 😂
Must have been good that he could play for Dundee and Dundee United at the same time.
Hahaha belter. I was thinking the same, why not say United?
You missed out George Best.
Rooney grabs a point from the jaws of victory. Three points against BOTTOM team should be a given. 🎉
An interesting pronunciation of Brechin...
Zidane and Bellingham are completely different players I think. Whoever is comparing them is miles off.
Who had been Scotland's best player since Ally McCoist?
David Weir?! Charlie Adam? Scott Brown? Andy Robertson?
Can't decide what the bigger offence is, the pronunciation of Brechin or calling United "Dundee"
He needs a go in the national side
he shudda went brighton
Coming from a Sporting fan really wanted to have seen him blossom there... really liked him, and had really high hopes for him... but he never proved to have much resilience or a true will to play... although I somewhat always thought he should have had more of a chance... he kinda always gave off a vibe of being too soft... glad to see he found his level in Canada... all the best to him
Bit disrespectful saying his levels in Canada. Whatever went wrong wasn’t to do with his talent.
@@henrymcvey6538 Mindset is a talent as well though. Just like being able to work hard is. People often say hard work beats talent, but tend to forget that working hard is a talent
Why didn't Aberdeen give Ryan a chance?
Gauld would never get into our National Squad
im a scot and always wanted him involved..... lovely player
Wym takefusa Kubo didn’t end well? 😂 he’s sociedad best player by far and one of the best RWs in the world currently
Bellingham will be a multiple ballon d’Or winner
that's interesting.
Evey time you call Dundee Utd Dundee it hurts my soul 😥
Be a naturalised Canadian in about a year I think. Hopefully, the Canadians wont be as stupid as us and get him capped. Should be getting a shot on the international stage.
Jorge Jesus os notorious here in Portugal for not giving youngster chances. In Benfica he wouldn't even play Bernardo Silva after he was the top scorer in Benfica B he was a joke. Cancelo would barely get a minute either
Jackie McNamara...DUFC leg-end.
as a Sporting fan i was sad he didnt get to play more, Jorge Jesus kinda ruined it for him.
