  • In this video, I go over the basic approach to questions that ask you to describe or state the function of a particular (underlined) sentence within a passage. I explain the basic strategy using one example and then go through a couple of additional examples, all of them from official practice tests.

    Full text of example questions:
    (1) Some bird species don’t raise their own chicks. Instead, adult females lay their eggs in other nests, next to another bird species’ own eggs. Female cuckoos have been seen quickly laying eggs in the nests of other bird species when those birds are out looking for food. After the eggs hatch, the noncuckoo parents will typically raise the cuckoo chicks as if they were their own offspring, even if the cuckoos look very different from the other chicks.
    Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole?"
    (2) "A study by a team including finance professor Madhu Veeraraghavan suggests that exposure to sunshine during the workday can lead to overly optimistic behavior. Using data spanning from 1994 to 2010 for a set of US companies, the team compared over 29,000 annual earnings forecasts
    to the actual earnings later reported by those companies. The team found that the greater the
    exposure to sunshine at work in the two weeks before a manager submitted an earnings forecast, the more the manager’s forecast exceeded what the company actually earned that year.
    Which choice best states the function of the underlined sentence in the overall structure of the
    text?"

    Well, I love your channel. Try to focus on the grammar rules and puncuation too. For international students, those questions can be tricky. Also, you should do a video about vocab. How can I improve my vocab to solve those question on DSAT? Thanks for your videos !

    Can you please do a video on all the grammar topics tested on the digital SAT Reading and Writing? Can you please do a video on transitions? Can you please do a video on word in context questions?

    • @345tutoring
      @345tutoring  Před rokem +2

      Yes, I'm definitely planning a video on transitions and will eventually have one on Words in Context questions. It would be hard to a single video on all of the topics, but I will try to put together a blog post that links to all of the videos I've done on the different topics. Thanks for your comment.

    Hey a small question regarding all your videos and the membership ones, do you pick all your questions from the DSAT/SAT practice papers or do you make them on your own because I stumbled across many questions I've solved before

    • @345tutoring
      @345tutoring  Před 8 měsíci +3

      Hello. Thanks for your question, and apologies that it's taken a few days to reply...
      I mostly use official College Board questions (from the Bluebook tests or the PDF tests, which use many of the same questions). I do also incorporate questions from the paper SAT (when relevant), and then there are videos on the Khan Academy questions (still a work in progress, as I haven't finished all of the sections).
      However, I do not make any of my own questions. The main reason is that I just don't have the resources to do that, since writing plausible SAT verbal questions really requires a whole team of people, and I'm just one person. Plus, I think it is always best to stick to questions from the actual test maker (which includes the Khan Academy questions in this case, since they have an official partnership with the College Board).
      I have looked at some of the third-party practice tests (Barron's, UWorld, Score Smart, etc.), but they all have issues in terms of not accurately simulating the test. They can be useful, but they can sometimes do more harm than good when the questions are poorly written.
      Hope this helps, but let me know if you have any more questions.
