Blizzard 797, TNT 640, Oly 277 fix and test

  • A couple of small jobs and test rides! Testing the TNT 640s new rear axle, Blizzard 797 powder capabilities, and checking if the larger stinger on the bigbore stroker 277 made it stop detonating.
    Next weekend is probably the last snowmobile weekend for this season, hoping to get the 797 working again on saturday, and hopefully some oval testing on sunday!

    My dad was a ski-doo dealer from the late 60's through 1974. Had a home-brewed race team with 340 single, 440 twin, and 800 triple blizzards... to this day I love the smell of Bardahl! Good times

      I did not grow up with them myself but somehow am really attracted to the 60s and early 70s stuff, there's just something about having an engine right in your lap.

    Thanks for the memories! My father-in-law used to race this kind of machines for Bombardier from the mid sixties to early seventies. His favorite was the 1st generation TNT with a 600 engine. I thought the Blizzard would be the obvious choice but he said that the weight of the 3 cylinder engine made them hard to handle. Loved to see and HEAR them!

    This is great . My dad used to repair sleds in late 60s to mid 80s for fun and he had the 70 399 tnt and 68 elan but our neighbour had that blizzard and i still remember as a boy how cool the tnt and blizzards were they were the shit!! Like you we drove right out our back yard into the woods , good memories

      Only the TNT has bogies but honestly bogies are probably better than the slide suspension on the Blizzard ;) it's a real piece of work that suspension.
      And I have to admit I did add dampers to the Oly skis, made it so much easier to handle.

    Back in to early 70's my buddy had a 295 TNT all stock. That thing was built like a tank and just flew nobody could touch it. Credit where credits due, hell of a machine and I'm a Rupp, Arctic, Polaris guy.

    Rode these types when they were new. 1968 Olympic 320 with 15” track and 1970 Nordic electric start with 18” track. Air cooled. Both had bogey wheel suspension. Groomed trails not yet a thing. Made own paths thru the woods and fields. Ski spindles protected by hood unlike today. Ride on the weekends and repair-tinker all week! Too much emphasis nowadays on high speed. Not enough on having a great ride over the hills and thru the woods.

    I used to have a TNT Silver Bullet was a fast machine back in it day. My dad bought it brand new what a beast it was.Had lots of fun and many many lake crossings I remember being Fairly reliable but it would flood easy.

    Years ago I used to live up north. The first sled we bought was a 65 Moto Ski Capri. The headlight ran on a magneto and was about as bright as a candle. We brought home a lot of firewood with that machine and I knew what the first horseless carriage drivers felt like when they went down the street. The town's people wondered what all that racket and smoke was all about... then they wanted one.

    I use a squirt bottle with regular gasoline and oil (20:1) with a good shot through the intake. Will start in a couple of pulls and has enough fuel to keep it running until you can choke by hand or lever.

      Thanks for following along :) They weren't great but I didn't want to start messing with the jetting in this warm weather.
      Hopefully I'll get a proper test ride done with the Blizzard next weekend! I'd like to get down on the river with it so I can open it up a little, but I'm most likely going to get stuck on my way there (even if it's right in front of the house) so not sure I want to attempt that.

      Luckily don't mind really :) the nearest real neighbor is about a quarter mile away, most of the houses here are cottages and are mostly empty :)
      One of the neighbors sometimes comes out to watch when I'm making noise, he loves it!

    My dad had the 640 when I was around 11 or 12. He had to start it for me. I had a lot of compression. I would take it out in the field and when I was turning my knee would block the carb boot and choke it. Then I couldn’t start it by myself. He would get mad and had to go start it for me lol.

    This was such a rush watching your video with your retro machines. I'm totally envious of your Blizzard and TNT models, as those were the 2 primo muscle sleds from back in the day. That Blizzard looks like a handful, with those 3 scarf sucking carbs right at your gut, and almost 800ccs growling away.
    Your 640 TNT is a 71? It has a great bark to that engine. I always liked the looks of the 69-70s myself, but yours is certainly very desirable.
    We still have my Dad's old 70 335 Olympic here. Its been sitting in the barn for the last 46 years or so. I do turn it over every once in a while to make sure it doesnt seize. But it might be time to get 'er going.

      Thanks! Yeah the Blizzard is bad ass, it's my number one bucket list sled and I still have a hard time believing I actually have one.
      The 640 is a 71 yeah. It looks like it did endurance races back in the day judging by the Swedish racing ski loops (they were mandatory) and the twist throttle was a popular mod over here for long distance racing. The pipes are Dougs pipes I think for a 72, one of them just barely touches the hood right at the air vent that 72s don't have. Really should get that dual carb setup on it some day!
      Take care of that Oly, if it's been sitting for that long and still turns over that sounds like it definitely has potential! Olys in stock form make really nice cruisers I think.

    That's a really nice trio Nico! Season is closing here in Canada too unfortunately, time to take the mopeds out! While the Unifolié is a nice touch on the Blizzard, the Oly is still a favorite with its dancing carb!

      I'm not sure what a unifolie is ;) but I love my Blizzard, it's my #1 dream sled and I still can't believe I actually own it.
      The carb is dancing controllably now at least like a normal one lunger :) it was maybe a bit hard to tell from the video but the oly got no traction at all when I got on the throttle, it has maybe 5 mm lugs but 200+ ice picks. It felt like it was connected to a rubber band, on the throttle nothing happened but when I let go it found some grip and moved :)

      Unifolié is the french name of the Maple Leaf (Canadian flag)! It's a nice homage to the sled's origins ;) It's hard to believe there's a Blizzard living in Sweden too, you're a very very lucky man! Did you import it from Canada or USA, or was it a Swedish race sled back in the days? Seeing the leaf springs jump around when you rev it on the stand gives just an idea of how powerful that 797 must be!

      Ahh I see! I bought it from Canada (Calgary) but it was originally from the US, but probably raced a lot in Canada too. Until around 2011 it was in Vermont.
      The springs have probably seen better days ;) but yeah the 797 is quite a power house compared to the 640 fanner. And it delivers instantly when you touch the throttle, unless the track is ratcheting of course, then it only delivers if there's a ditch to go down in, haha! :) I wasn't really expecting it to have traction and jump forward like that.

    ‘71 T’NT 440 was the first sled I owned. Speedo read 63 mph! Couple years later bought a 440 speedway. T’NT was a granny sled.

      It was quite an undertaking to be honest but so worth it, the extra traction can't be compared to even the best 114 tracks.
      I'm pretty sure I used 9 teeth 2.52 drivers, whatever size gives the same diameter as the stock drivers. They are on a hex driveshaft from some widetrack machine and machined to the correct length for the 797 tunnel. Drilled new mounting holes in the aluminum profiles that sit up in the tunnel, to move the suspension back a bit, can't remember the exact offset.
      I use the stock rear axle but modified plates off a TNT with the sliding brackets a lot closer to the pivot point. I lost almost all travel in the rear axle but honestly can't tell much of a difference. The rear springs sit just inside the track now right next to the rear idlers and are a real pain in the ass to mount because it's a very tight fit, but once they're in it's not too bad to loosen them a turn or so while adjusting tension. I had to cut about half an inch off each side of the track for clearance at the rear of the tunnel so the track is about 13" wide now.
      It's been working out great, after being frustrated about literally never getting any traction with it that's no longer an issue.
      And best of all is I didn't have to ruin anything so its a reversible mod. If you want to put back the stock setup the only evidence it was ever modded are a couple of extra holes in the aluminum profiles and those are well hidden inside the tunnel so not visible to anyone.
      I've just built my first suspension from scratch last year, haven't tested it yet but if it works out I may build one for the 797 too because the stock suspension isn't doing it any favors. But I like the fact that I could keep it original :)

    What kind of track is that on the blizzard?! how did you manage to get the big paddles to fit around the front cogs without rubbing on the tunnel? I would love to build an olympic with a paddle track but im not sure what kind of track would be easiest to fit.

      It's a 32 mm full block 121“ track. The Blizzard has a lot more space in the tunnel than an Oly :) I have regular 9 teeth 2.52 drivers on it now with a custom shaft.
      But on an Olympic you can fit at least 7/8" lugs if you use 7 cog 2.52 drivers, for higher lugs you probably need 6 teeth drivers or move the drive shaft down and away from the tank a bit. I used to have a 7/8" track on the Oly before I switched to an ice track. All the traction you need on an Oly really, at least if you're not in deep powder.

      @@90daysinvegas53 honestly don't know, I've had it up to around 130 km/h or 80 mph.
      Clutching is a problem with these old clutches, I've clutched it to take off pretty good but top speed suffers because of that, I'm pretty sure the primary clutch doesn't compress all the way with the spring I'm using.

    I had a 640 TNT with tuners I kept breaking spindles I put spreaders on it and started breaking them every time out. I got rid of it when my 73 TX 340 blew it away.

      Yeah those spindles aren't the strongest. This 640 also had spreaders, and bent spindles.. I replaced the spindles because the splines were bad too and got rid of the spreaders.

      The previous owner did. Originally the sled came from St Albans, VT.

      I don't think the 71 is a racing number from back in the day. Your 797 is a 1971 model year. I believe that is what the 71 number on the sled designates. The 640 tnt is also a 1971 model year, if the 797 was owned by the same person, he probably put the 64 number on it to designate it being a 640 tnt, because 71 is already on the 797. Take good care of that 797, they are worth quite a few $ now.

      @@jessbottom9580 I know what kind of sleds they are and I know what the numbers mean but good analysis ;) They did not come from the same previous owner, I imported the 797 from Canada and the 640 was hidden in a barn in northern Sweden. The previous owner put the 71 on it, I put the 64 on the TNT myself.

      All 3 have no mufflers :) The Blizzard has its original pipes. The TNT has Dougs aftermarket pipes from back in the day, and the Oly has a custom pipe.

      AuMechanic Yep! Keeping it oldschool. This is the stock carb for this engine. The 797 has 3 Tillys.

      Yeah I think they're great too. But not everyone's cup of tea, a lot of people replace them with Mikunis. But good for me, that means they are selling their old carbs and I can add them to my hoard ;)
      A Tillotson would definitely solve the fountain problem.

      Sorry for the late reply, it has a 45.5 (bored 44) with 3.2 mm main jet. Had to drill my own jet, this is about a 1200 jet in Mikuni sizes. Running on E85 it wants tons of fuel.
      I'm going to try and taper bore a 44 this winter, that should give me almost the same flow but hopefully smaller jets.

      Jag tror egentligen att den pumpar så det räcker nu, det rann soppa ur gasaren efter 2 drag när jag hade översta membran/packning i fel ordning. Men det kanske är nåt annat fel istället.
      Jag hade hoppats på köra ner den på älven och bara hålla stumt för att testa, men svårt att ta sig dit just nu med en veteran iaf :/

      Det var nog lågfarten som var lite fet, jag kunde ju inte hålla så mycket gas utan att dräpa mig där i skogen :) den är svår att justera i farten. Bestyckningen blev helt annars jämfört med innan så jag tror att det har gjort skillnad att byta membranen men behöver en bättre teststräcka bara där det går att hålla stumt längre än en sekund. Skulle egentligen ha kört några gånger till men jag var stressad för jag skulle iväg lite senare och det fanns 2 maskiner till som skulle köras så det fick duga såhär tills vidare. Men jag ska se om jag inte kan fixa ett spår ner till älven, ca en meter hög plogvall nu som jag inte tror jag tar mig över med dom här.

    I hate the mikuni carb with a passion, I couldn't figure the thing out, nobody around here wanted to help so after 3 years and almost as many carb kits I sold the sledit was a 74 Yamaha tf433

    hi very interested about what track you had on the 797 blizzard? any detail please?

      Hi, it's a newer 121 track with 32 mm lugs. Making it fit without destroying anything wasn't an easy task! I moved the entire skid back a bit by adding new holes in the top aluminum plates on it (so no new holes in the tunnel). Custom rear axle plates, custom drive shaft, custom slides as the skid is really a bit too wide for these tracks but with some really narrow slides it just barely works. It's all reversible to stock if I want to.
      The difference in traction is immeasurable!

      @@plsextremsport I think it is a Polaris track. 32 mm full block. But any 121" track should fit the same I think. Yes 2.52 pitch, I can't remember right now if I used 8 or 9 teeth drivers. Stock rear idlers.

      @@plsextremsport the worst part about the whole thing is the rear spring setup. I had to cut the track (make it narrower) because the spring ends up inside the track with this setup because the rear axle is so far back. That was a real headache!

      @@Hollaendaren because I was born and raised in Ontario. My job brought me down here. I still watch every Leaf game.
      Even the Polaris tripples didnt have the sound of the blizzard.
      Our first Skidoo was the 10 hp olympique in around 1963. I ran that till I got my TNT 440.
      My dad kept it and bought a 68 super 370 olympique. Fast when it ran. But was unreliable as hell.
      Bombardier was slow to incorporate the use of Mikuni carbs and stayed too long with the center mounted engine which hurt them in the end.
      In 1974 they came out with the front mounted engine chassis. The TNT free air cooled engine was pretty nice. I never owned one but I never heard anything bad.
      Tiloston carbs were ok as a single carb. 2 were a pain 3 were a nightmare. I actually had a small vacuum guage that I used to tune them.
      I miss snowmobiling.... but we got airboats down here!!! LOL

      They are pretty small, and don't work very well. They're from 1971 and I want to keep the sled as it was raced back then so not going to change them :)

    some FMF power mufflers would actually make them more fun because you could ride it all day without getting a head ache and pissing off the neighbors

    put the factory throttle control back on it, it's there for a reason, the result of hours of testing, and lots of money, expertise. so you don't hurt yourself.

    You never got wide open on any of them. That's what people want to see. Open that sucker up and make it scream for about 5 or 10 seconds see if you can hit 80 miles an hour. Well, the people either want to see it wide open or a wreck : ) tell me I'm lying : D

      You're completely right :) As a true racer I have my excuses ready though! Here goes... I think I did go wide open on the one lunger but it never got any traction in soft snow with my ice track (no lugs just ice studs) so nothing really happened..
      I almost crashed the Blizzard with just a blip of the throttle so I think that was enough ;) And the TNT has the twist throttle which is awkward as hell on a sled especially when things get bumpy, but that's how this one was raced back in the day so it's staying :) I actually went to an 18 km enduro race with it and honestly I should probably be glad the rear axle broke after 2 km and I couldn't continue, I'd either have crashed because of the twist throttle or I'd have completed it and had sore muscles for weeks ;)

      @@Hollaendaren well I'll tell you what there's no question all three of them sounded screaming mean! They sounded awesome. I have to admit though I've never liked the thumb control throttle on anyting. I much prefer the twist throttle as you have on the one. My thumb tends to get tired it starts to hurt way before I'm ready to quit riding. Either way thanks for the response I appreciate it. Obviously I'm in the United States so you definitely have a fan over here and I subscribed. Keep up the good work and I'm ready to see that 4-cylinder fire up. That thing's going to be a beast. I hope it runs like you want it to. Something tells me it will. You seem quite knowledgeable and educated so there's no doubt in my mind. Keep up the good work bro!!

    Can't believe you are using starting fluid on a two stroke. But out of all of them I'd take the single all day long nice sleds

      A little starter fluid doesn't hurt anything. There's so much oil left in there from previous running it's got all the oil it needs until it pumps fresh fuel with fresh oil :)

    2:50 Spray the starter fluid behind the open throttle, not against the closed throttle. For better results. :)
