Much of the ROCK AND ROLL sound came from Elvis' 1940s sessions in the Church scene in Memphis. Elvis WAS part of the change of modern music. He WAS a pioneer. Its not culture appropriation / culture vulture when you help to pioneer a new genre of music. Elvis never stole a song. He credited everyone. He jammed with and appreciated those that came before him.
You can't STEAL "COOL" You can't steal "RHYTHM" You can't steal "SOUL". You can't STEAL "HOW TO DANCE". You can't steal "HOW TO SAAAAAANG". You either HAVE THESE SKILLS, or you do NOT. Elvis had ALL these skills and more.

I didn't know much of young Elvis, but in the 70's in my teens, I LOVED this song. All his songs stuck with me....they were different.

I am not meaning that in a bad way --- His Early songs are beautiful - His voice was much higher -- and later Elvis couldn't hit the high notes He said - 1958 On Are beautiful but so are 56 57 -- I enjoy them because that's when He was so younggg and full of dreams -- and very very shy but onstage he was wicked -- Elvis was always shy and his friends say he was very insecure like with his neck he hated his neck being teased about it called names why He always had collars -- as said By Sirley that lived right behind Graceland - and good friends -- IF You listen to his early interviews in 1956 Wowwww amazing

This was my great grandpa’s favorite song. Im from KY and my grandparents knew Elvis personally from 66-77.

My favorite. I was too young at the time to attend an Elvis concert, but now listening to so much of his music, I wish in the 70s he would have done more of this stuff and steered away from his 50s stuff. He was too mature to be doing the rock stuff still. Don't get me wrong, throw in 1 or 2 old songs but his voice was changing and becoming so rich. I feel like this was his sweet spot in the 70s.

This was a big hit for Elvis in 1970 (I was in high school). It got a lot of radio air play. And I have a vivid memory of a dreary, gray day..sitting, looking out the window at the pouring rain & this came on the radio. And I was in Kentucky (still am).

It’s almost impossible to auto tune Elvis voice there a video on that you can google it very interesting at Wings of Pegasus on why Elvis cannot be auto tuned. Freddy Mercury and others have been auto tuned but Elvis is impossible to be auto tuned.

@@sherrera66You're totally right! By auto-tuning it takes away the characteristics of hs voice & the way it should sound. Elvis' voice isn't suitable for autotune. Elvis often sang G4 and autotune doesn't read that verry well. (It's Now or Never, Suspicious Minds, I I Can Dream ect)

Thanks Ray, love this song and the whole album - Elvis in Memphis - is brilliant. That album was released in 1969, a year after the Comeback special and Elvis’ voice just sounds phenomenal !! Another side to Elvis and boy does he have a lot of sides. He’s just the best !!

And since we are on the subject of Fun Facts: Elvis was the music conductor in the studio on this track. Ronnie Milsap was the piano player on this track and Elvis kept telling Ronnie, "More thunder, Ronnie!"
Because Elvis really wanted the piano to mimic the sound of thunder in certain parts of this song.
Like I said before, Elvis knew what he wanted and he had a way of getting what he wanted musically wise.
Another Fun Fact: The Lady Back Up Vocalists are The Blossoms. They sang back up for Elvis during his 1968 Comeback Special and are the three ladies you'll see with Elvis on the '68 Gospel Medley which features "Where I Could Go But To The Lord/ Up Above My Head/ Saved". Three songs in one.
Darlene Love was a member of The Blossoms and was also in a bit part in Elvis's last film "Change Of Habit". You'll see her in the "Let Us Pray" scene as one of the ladies singing alongside Elvis.
And Miss Darlene Love had always had nothing but good things to say about Elvis.

At one point, Presley proclaimed that “rock & roll music is basically gospel or rhythm and blues,” which, in the final broadcast, segued to a medley of gospel songs he especially enjoyed. “Elvis knew the old, old hymns of the church,” recalls Darlene Love, who sang backup on the NBC special with the Blossoms. “Whenever we had a break, he would go, ‘Darlene! Do you know this one?’ He’d go get his guitar, and I’d say, ‘Yeah. Come on, let’s sing it,’ and we’d go off in the corner to sing it.”
The gospel sequence, filmed the day after the sit-down set along with the special’s infamous “bordello” sequence that was cut from the initial broadcast for time, also fulfilled another mission for Binder: “I wanted to let the world know that here was a guy who was not prejudiced, who was raised in the heart of prejudice, but who was really above all that,” the director told Guralnick.
“The choir was originally all white,” Love recalls. “So they took the Blossoms with three black girls and put them in with the mix to make it sound more gospel. We thought that was going to be the end of it, but at the sessions, Elvis and the Blossoms got to talking - me mainly, because I had a big gospel background. Eventually he decided the Blossoms should be in the 1968 special.”
Love remembers Presley as being “a little shy, very introverted” during the rehearsals. “He was very nervous because he hadn’t performed in years,” says the singer, who was so excited about working with Presley that she snuck into the audience to watch during the tapings. “When you talked gospel with him, though, he was just like a friend sitting down talking. But he was very nervous because he had become a movie star and hoped the performance would be all right. He was very concerned about, ‘How do I look? Do I look all right?’ He was just like a normal person, but he was Elvis Presley. So how could you be normal?”

By and large, though, Deasy remembers Presley as lighthearted during the recording sessions. “My wife was at the rehearsal, and Elvis came in and walked up behind her,” he says. “I said, ‘Kathie, I want you to meet Elvis.’ And she turns around and elbows him right in the chest, and of course, he fell back and acted like it really hurt. We all got a good laugh. That’s how cool he was.”
Presley goofed around a lot at the rehearsals, too. He’d push recordings to just a few minutes before midnight - driving the music-union representatives crazy - only to finish perfectly on time. And when the band recorded “Guitar Man,” he came out of the vocal booth to dance to the music. “He was in such good shape,” Deasy says. “He was into karate, and he was physically very cool. He’s taller than you thought, but he was out there doing this dance while we were playing and it was a super connection. It became bigger than the music itself.”
Presley’s easygoing manner didn’t stop his entourage from losing their cool trying to impress him, though. “From the moment he walked in the studio, it was almost like all the guys there were bowing down to him, but he didn’t care whatsoever,” Blaine recalls. “Once in a while, he’d say something like, ‘I’m a little bit thirsty,’ and 15 guys would run at him with Coke bottles. And because he was studying karate, all those guys were doing the same thing. Elvis would come into the studio and one guy would leap out at him, like he was going to kill him, and Elvis would go into his stance. It was really hysterical.
“The demagoguery was just unbelievable, but Elvis was truly a gentleman and a sweetheart of a guy,” he continues. “He just acted the way a country boy would act.”
At a press conference a few days before the taping, Presley was humble. “We figured it was about time,” he said of why he wanted to do the special. “Besides, I figured I’d better do it before I got too old.”

It is after midnight now, so it is the 46th anniversary of Elvis' death. It also happens to be my birthday, and what better gift than my own StoryTime with Ray! And I have one coming for you Ray. What's really funny is that 1) I am a voracious reader, so me coming out of the library hit the mark. 2) I also have a degree in Culinary Arts (along with 2 others), so Elvis as a chef was a hoot and right up my alley. And the prospect of Elvis with icing on his chest - my blood pressure is shooting up, and I need a drink. Where the story becomes fantasy is me being naked under a trenchcoat. Elvis would have tried to run, but he'd have never made it past me.

E's range here is outstanding, along with the instrumentation. I wish he had performed this song at All his concerts on a continuum. I really only know of one sequence of time when he introduced and performed the song live during its release and it was fabulous. This song has always been one of my favs~ among many! #EPForever ❤

His voice is absolutely crystal clear even though it's 1970's audi technology which shows you how incredible he was as a singer. Mr. Vibe you should double up pretty soon and do this as a reaction believe me you'll be glad you did.
I think most of his live versions were Better than his recordings. Could be, because Parker and crew couldn't mess with it! You can hear pure Elvis in the lives, because He arranged and produced the sounds he wanted! He had the Best ear for music in the business as his orchestra leader Joe Gershew said,and he worked with alot of people!

Many singers sound like they're trying too hard to pull off certain vocal tricks. Elvis just did things so naturally, and his range was pretty impressive. Everything he did, he made it uniquely his regardless of who wrote it. You could say he and Roy Hamilton sounded quite a bit alike on Hurt. Polk Salad Annie, at first, was pretty close to Tony Joe Whites' original version, but Elvis tweaked them just enough!
