Time & Mind: Was Einstein Wrong About Time?

  • The role of time in mainstream physics-as it arises in Newtonian theory, relativity theory, quantum theory, and the 2nd law of thermodynamics-is relatively well understood. However, there is a profound mystery concerning the passage of time associated with consciousness. Many physicists maintain that this passage is purely a feature of mind, going beyond physics itself, while others argue that it points to some new physical paradigm, perhaps associated with the marriage of relativity theory and quantum theory. Certainly, the status of time in any final theory of physics remains unclear.
The possibility that physics may eventually accommodate and elucidate the nature of consciousness and associated experience suggests the need to address issues that are currently viewed as being on the borders of physics and philosophy. It also impinges on developments in neurophysics, cognitive science and psychology. So this is an interdisciplinary problem and this conference brings together experts in all the relevant fields. There are contributions from the physicists Bernard Carr, Paul Davies, George Ellis and Lee Smolin, the neurophysicist Alex Gomez-Marin, the cognitive neuroscientist Julia Mossbridge, and the psychologists Jonathan Schooler and Marc Wittmann.
Although the conference is organized by Essentia Foundation-which is associated with the philosophical tradition of Idealism-it covered a wide range of approaches. Our vision is to cover topics that are relevant to Idealism, but not to exclude alternative views from the conference.

Bernard the reason you are you is because that is your identity. That is the one thing that only you possesses that nobody else does out of an infinite number of infinite for an infinite number of eternities. Even when this most prized possession that is your own self is shared as it always is with infinity because you are part of it there is still that little part that is you because that is the only one that there is that is you completely unique 100% One of a kind for all Infiniti of Infiniti of eternity an existence is you are the only one of these things that there will ever be whether you're an atheist or religious that is a fact both ways. There's only one of you that will ever be and there's only one of you that's ever been and that is a completely unique thing that will never be replicated or reproduced anywhere else. That is what people don't understand identity is the very first thing besides movement.

Time as a Superposition in Higher Dimensions: This notion suggests that our perception of time as a linear progression may be an oversimplification of a more complex reality. Instead of time unfolding linearly as we experience it, it could exist in a superposition state within higher-dimensional spaces. In this view, time would not flow strictly from past to future but could encompass multiple potential timelines or configurations simultaneously.
Elaboration: Consider time as a dimension similar to the three spatial dimensions we perceive, but with additional dimensions beyond our comprehension. In this framework, time could exist in a superposition of states, analogous to how quantum particles can exist in multiple states simultaneously until observed. From our limited perspective, we perceive time as progressing linearly, but in higher-dimensional reality, time may exhibit a more intricate structure, encompassing multiple possibilities and configurations.

It is a bit like the label curved SpaceTime, as a teen what did that induce inside my imagination, well that SpaceTime is a fabric of something whats however. So something is really curved physically. I think the same effect plays on us for Time, we experience it as a Dimension on it self. I do not believe that is the case however.

In realms where physics intertwines with thought,
Where time's elusive dance is deeply wrought,
The scholars gather, minds ablaze, to ponder,
The mysteries of time, its spell we're under.
    Einstein's legacy, a towering might,
Yet shadows linger, questions taking flight,
Was he mistaken, in his grasp of time's embrace?
Or does the truth reside in a subtler space?
Newton's clockwork universe, precise and grand,
With time as a river, flowing at its hand,
But relativity whispers, bending the stream,
A dance of spacetime, in a cosmic dream.
    Quantum mysteries, where particles entwine,
In a dance of uncertainty, where time may redefine,
Do they hold the key to consciousness's sway,
Or is there more to time than we dare say?
The second law, a decree of entropy's reign,
A arrow of time, flowing against the grain,
Yet within our minds, does time find its home,
A subjective journey, where moments roam?
    Idealism's gaze, casting shadows long,
    Philosophical ponderings, a timeless song,
    Neurophysics, psychology, the mind's terrain,
In search of answers, through each winding lane.
    Essentia Foundation, a beacon bright,
Guiding seekers through the depths of night,
In the convergence of minds, a symphony plays,
Time and consciousness, in an endless maze.
So let us journey, with open minds unfurled,
Exploring the mysteries of this time-bound world,
For in the union of science and thought, we find,
The essence of existence, in the tapestry of Time and Mind.

An interesting aside to the specious time idea is the great American baseball player who claimed back in the 40's, when he played the game, that time "slowed down for him to the point that he could see the rotation of the ball as it approached and could react to it in ways that others couldn't. Interestingly he claimed to be able to smell the impact of the ball against the bat the horsehide of the ball striking his bat. Many have claimed he was full of it, but there is little doubt he was most likely the greatest hitter of all time. And perhaps his explanation is an example of this phenomena.

The relationship between mind and time is simple. Time is a measurement of difference. That’s why time is set by an atomic clock and we have time zones for light but not other things. Time itself is just the measurement of the differences between each other. The mind is grown differences through experiences and such. The mind grows its folds in relation to the differences absorbed by our sensors. Those folds are the neurons and the differences grown into our body/difference. These folds influence the body and the body manipulated reality to find things within the connections of differences. So time and mind are similar because the differences and connections that build both of them.

If an observer were to approach a null geodesic by accelerating close to the speed of light, they and their clock would perceive less time passing than a standard, earth bound dudebro.
So time is not absolute. The absolute substance is by definition the only substance from which all things are derived.
So time must not be a fault in the stars, for entropy is in the eye of the beholder. 😂

The issue of 'separate identity' and the fundamental privacy of personal experience in the context of that which is inaccessible and internal is addressed in the work on 'quantum information' by Federico Faggin and G Mauro D'Ariano which also has deep implications for an understanding of time as a fundamental mediator of trans-action within the hidden relational realm of the quantum substratum. Which can be found in a paper titled 'Hard Problem and Free Will: an information-theoretical approach' co-authored by Faggin and D'Ariano which incorporates quantum information.

Why do we corroborate each other’s experience? Under classical physics, the simplest explanation was that mentality is a map of physical territory. With QM, the Born Rule, Bell’s inequality, the invocation of internal symmetries in abstract Hilbert space, etc, this hypothesis of a physical world to explain our mutual corroboration is the no longer the simplest one; in fact it's become impossibly complicated (many worlds etc). Maybe QM suggests that we’ve been confusing the map and the territory. Maybe the realm of Mind/Qualia/Experience is the territory, and QM is the map, and then there’s no remaining impetus to invoke anything physical/objective at all. I suspect the mathematical models of physics are the best-yet attempt for predicting our mutual corroborations/constraints in a purely mental domain, and that's it. I wonder more people don’t entertain this “zero worlds” idea. This view is entirely scientific, if you reframe science as the most sophisticated and rigorous method for prediction of experience, rather than any description of a "natural world".

Not far from Cincinnati Ohio there is a somewhat smaller scale reproduction of the Eiffel Tower in an amusement park called King's Island. From the top of the tower one can see the entire park all at once- rollercoasters, games, food, water rides, and water park, you name it. But as you can imagine, experiencing the park in this manner is very different than actually riding the rides.
When a soul descends the Eiffel Tower of the block universe and starts riding the rollercoasters, it experiences time and everything else entirely differently.

I so much appreciate these presentations and discussion. It further confirms what I’ve come to suspect about the fundamental nature of existence.
One point of confusion though, is the concept of an evolving block universe. In the Einsteinian view, isn’t "block time" also part of the model? Evolution implies a process that unfolds over time, which wouldn’t square with an eternal, timeless “Now”.
This might be resolved in the Idealist position that the Block is that inaccessible domain behind Bernardo’s frequent analogy of a dashboard, and it is simply our experience or “view” (Smollin?) that evolves. Perhaps this is also what Bernard Carr refers to as an additional dimension?
At any rate, I look foreward to watching this again!

The challenge of dealing with time is to recognize there is a fundamental distinction between a materialistic/nominalistic worldview with which one can associate the function of the left cerebral hemisphere and is a form of time which is synchronic and 'chronotic' and, effectively, spatialized, as Henri Bergson would argue, versus a form of time that is fundamentally relational, intersubjective, qualitative, diachronic and 'kairotic' and is associated with the function of the 'relationally-oriented' right cerebral hemisphere. The former 'chronotic' time is 'the time of the physicist' is quantitative and numerical involving the counting of oscillations of a physical system that is a stable oscillator--it exists but it is linear, and it is NOT continuous NOR is it real. The latter form of 'kairotic' time, associated with Bergson's 'La Durée', however, is relational, intersubjective, and it IS continuous, circular, AND it IS real.

I found a mechanical definition of time. If we have a universe of radiation alone, it is not possible to define either time or space. But the moment radiation self-traps to form mass by going in closed loops, time is formed. It is the number of rounds radiation makes as it goes round. This is a number and goes in one direction exactly like time. If there is more than one mass created in this way, space is defined by sending light to go an reflect back while counting time. The distance is derived from d=c . f. So, both time and distance are created when matter is created. This is also the way the SI standard of units defines the second and meter, by the frequency of rotation/oscillation and the meter by the number of wavelengths.

I greatly enjoyed these talks. I would like to bring to attention of the audience that the connection between consciousness, physics, and higher dimensions was discussed long ago in my paper "On the Quantization of Gravity by Embedding Space-time in a Higher Dimensional Space", Classical and Quantum Gravity, 2 (1985) 869. Among other, in that paper it stays:
"In a normal, awake, state an observer is continuously measuring (at least with his sense organs) the proper time; he has no idea of ’other worlds’. Besides this situation, our theory also predicts a situation in which an observer does not measure the proper time, and as a compensation he can then have some knowledge about the distribution of matter through the higher space, i.e. he can experience in some way the existence of alternative worlds. Has this last prediction any relation to reality? My conjecture is that it has. Remember that an observer is not always in an awake state of consciousness. He can be under the influence of hypnosis, drugs, etc, or he can simply sleep and dream. When in such a state of consciousness, he is no longer precisely ‘measuring’ the proper time; he is not aware of the usual three-dimensional space or world, but nevertheless he is aware of something: he experiences various hallucinations, dreams, etc. Is this related to some certain extent with the existence of higher dimensional space and alternative worlds?"
At that time, mentioning consciousness in a physics paper published in a physics journal was not very common.
The concept of a three dimensional "now", perceived by consciousness, moving in a higher dimensional space (for example, one with three time dimensions), has been explored in several of my other publications. How Einstein's "block universe" can be superseded by introducing, besides the special relativity time coordinate, t, an additional time, referred to as "evolution time" or tau, has been considered by some physicists following Stueckelberg's initial proposal. In such theories, the wave function depends on tau and four spacetime coordinates and can be localized in spacetime, meaning it is localized not only in space but also in the time coordinate t. The region of such localization moves forward along t as tau increases. In my paper "On the interpretation of the relativistic quantum mechanics with invariant evolution parameter", Foundations of Physics 21 (1991) 1005, I argued that the localization of wave function in time implies that the observer is sharply aware only of a brief time interval around the "now", and that the tau is the time perceived by consciousness. This concept corresponds to "specious present" as considered by Bernard.
In the works, superficially discussed in this brief comment, one can find how some of the concepts presented in the fascinating talks on this CZcams channel can be formalized within the framework of higher dimensional theories and parametrized relativistic quantum mechanics.

As written in the Book of Time, time existed prior to nothing so the length of nothing could be measured. Then time transitioned nothing into something. Time is fixed with a beginning and an end. Energy moves throughout time leaving a ghost signature at that point in time where you can return back to that point and witness the energy signature. Time being fixed means energy also has a signature at each future point in time. In the end, time will again transition something into nothing and then measure the length of nothing. Time is the beginning and the end.

Relaytivity: It seems to me that two things far apart do not exist in the same reality. In order to be in the same reality, you need to establish a physical connection between the two. But to do that you need Communicate I.E. something must travel from one to the other-and that takes…TIME. The farther away from each other the more time it takes and the greater the separation from each other’s (instantaneous) reality. There are no curvature in space only in time and space.

You need energy to have time. Time is simply how we perceive all the processes and energy transfers occuring simultaneously around us all the time. Chemical energy converted into kinetic energy for all living beings who survive off of nuclear energy from the sun being converted to thermal energy and warming our planet thus creating countless and constant energy transfers. Anything that moves or changes gives us the perception of time and anything that moves or changes contains energy. That is my ideas on time. Does being near a very dense object slow these processes down so that they occur at a slower rate (aging would be one of these processes and possibly conciousness or perception itself could be one of these processes.
Edit: I believe time doesn’t go in reverse because it isn’t even possible. If it goes backwards in time we might perceive it as forwards anyways. In the literal sense without any “handicaps” it would be simply because the energy transfers do not and cannot behave in that way. You would have to change physics in a very specific and seemingly impossible way to allow energy transfers to reverse but if every single energy transfer that changed the world around you doesn’t reverse then the time wouldn’t “reverse” as it was. Every energy transfer that carried away the energy of our loved ones or they could not come back the same way. This would be incredibly complicated and is completely theoretical.

I think time is a Dance of Objectivity and Subjectivity in Life
Life is a fascinating interplay of objectivity and subjectivity, a dance where each step is measured by the yardstick of human experience and understanding. At its core, life is a series of processes that blend the objective reality of the world with the subjective interpretations of our minds. It's a journey where the tangible meets the intangible, and where the concrete facts of existence intertwine with the abstract nuances of personal experience.
Objectivity in life is the solid ground beneath our feet. It's the reality that exists independently of our thoughts and beliefs, the universal truths that govern the laws of nature and the physical world. It's the predictability of a sunrise, the certainty of gravity, and the unchanging principles of mathematics. Objectivity offers us a stable foundation from which we can explore, learn, and grow.
Subjectivity, on the other hand, is the sky above us, vast and ever-changing. It's the realm of personal feelings, emotions, and experiences. It's the unique lens through which we view the world, colored by our individual personalities, cultures, and backgrounds. Subjectivity allows us to dream, to create, and to find meaning in the chaos of existence. It's the brushstroke of imagination on the canvas of reality.
The agency of subjectivity enables us to set goals, pursue purposes, and forge our paths. It's the driving force behind our passions and the spark that ignites our creativity. Through subjectivity, we interpret the objective world, giving rise to new ideas, insights, and concepts. It's the human touch that transforms the objective into something deeply personal and profoundly meaningful.
Understanding life as a system, a predicting machine, is to acknowledge the interplay of these two forces. It's to recognize that our thoughts and feelings, both positive and negative, are influenced by the objective world even as they shape our subjective experiences. This understanding empowers us to navigate life's complexities with a sense of balance, appreciating the objective structures that hold us steady while embracing the subjective experiences that make life truly worth living.
I believe time is the dance of objectivity and subjectivity, is what makes life rich and complex. It's a dynamic relationship that challenges us to think deeply, feel profoundly, and live fully. As we continue to explore this dance, we uncover the layers of our existence, discovering the beauty in both the measurable and the immeasurable aspects of life.

Since time is used to describe change, does time have discrete (universe-spanning, hence fractional) intervals, or is time simply extra-dimensional order-in-complexity, energy being any change in that? Expansion, or changes in volume of time, create mass (alt t) in black holes, so time seems to ping the distant future there, as much as the past. But how do super-fluid trans-locations of time (dark matter flux) encompass a gravitic space?. in other words, when E=mc2, we can replace E with 'change in extra-dimensional complexity' = (alt t) x c 2 (volume of time), no?.

The polar opposite of black holes (cosmological) are monads (quantum):
      [Monad in philosophy/cosmogony]:
Monad (from Greek μονάς monas, "singularity" in turn from μόνος monos, "alone") refers, in cosmogony, to the Supreme Being, divinity or the sum "I am" of all things.
The concept was reportedly conceived by the Pythagoreans and may refer variously to a single source acting alone, or to an indivisible origin, or to both.
The concept was later adopted by other philosophers, such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who referred to the Monad as an *elementary particle.*
It had a *geometric counterpart,* which was debated and discussed contemporaneously by the same groups of people.
[In this speculative scenario, let's consider Leibniz's *Monad,* from the philosophical work "The Monadology", as an abstract representation of *the zero-dimensional space that binds quarks together* using the strong nuclear force]:
      1) Indivisibility and Unity: Monads, as indivisible entities, mirror the nature of quarks, which are deemed elementary and indivisible particles in our theoretical context. Just as monads possess unity and indivisibility, quarks are unified in their interactions through the strong force.
      2) Interconnectedness: Leibniz's monads are interconnected, each reflecting the entire universe from its own perspective. In a parallel manner, the interconnectedness of quarks through the strong force could be metaphorically represented by the interplay of monads, forming a web that holds particles together.
      3) Inherent Properties: Just as monads possess inherent perceptions and appetitions, quarks could be thought of as having intrinsic properties like color charge, reflecting the inherent qualities of monads and influencing their interactions.
      4) Harmony: The concept of monads contributing to universal harmony resonates with the idea that the strong nuclear force maintains harmony within atomic nuclei by counteracting the electromagnetic repulsion between protons, allowing for the stability of matter.
      5) Pre-established Harmony: Monads' pre-established harmony aligns with the idea that the strong force was pre-designed to ensure stable interactions among quarks, orchestrating their behavior in a way that parallels the harmony envisaged by Leibniz.
      6) Non-Mechanical Interaction: Monads interact non-mechanically, mirroring the non-mechanical interactions of quarks through gluon exchange. This connection might be seen as a metaphorical reflection of the intricacies of quark-gluon dynamics.
      7) Holism: The holistic perspective of monads could symbolize how quarks, like the monads' interconnections, contribute holistically to the structure and behavior of particles through the strong force interactions.
[Monad in mathematics, science and technology]:
Monad (biology), a historical term for a simple unicellular organism
Monad (category theory), a construction in category theory
Monad (functional programming), functional programming constructs that capture various notions of computation
Monad (homological algebra), a 3-term complex
Monad (nonstandard analysis), the set of points infinitesimally close to a given point

"The world looks significantly different depending on which time projection it is viewed in." (Naan). Of the three: Schwarzschild, proper and global, it seems that the third time should be chosen, since the asymmetry of time actually implies the accumulation of time, more precisely, history. In other words, it is the age of the system that is the determining factor for describing the physical processes occurring in the system under consideration. We can say that there is neither the present or the future, but only the evolving past.*
P.S. “The direction of the process is always the loss of energy availability.”, Feynman.
Thus, it is impossible to measure time even mentally experiment (without the use of clocks, instruments, phenomena ...) without energy consumption.

The asymmetry of time actually implies the accumulation of time, more precisely, history, variety.
Apparently, the researcher can detect and measure the effect of the aging process in his own frame of reference caused by the phenomenon of global time t(universe)=1/H: ds^2=c^2dт^2=g(00)c^2dt^2=(1-Ht*)c^2dt^2, where the Ht* parameter
shows which part of the global the time "elapsed" in its own frame of reference, t* is the measurement time according to the clock of the resting observer, t is the duration of any physical process in its own frame of reference.
That is, an observer can measure the increase in the duration of processes in the laboratory frame of reference: dт=[√ g(00)]dt=[√(1-Ht*)]dt~(1-Ht*)dt

This is an invitation to see a theory. Could light be a wave with particle characteristics as a probabilistic future unfolds photon by photon? This idea is supported by the fact that light photon ∆E=hf energy is continuously transforming potential energy into the kinetic Eₖ=½mv² energy of matter, in the form of electrons. The dynamic geometry of this process would form an uncertain ∆×∆pᵪ≥h/4π probabilistic future continuously unfolding relative to the electron probability cloud of the atoms and the wavelength of the light. In this theory, the wave particle duality of light and matter (electrons) is forming a blank canvas that we (atoms) interact with relative to the energy and momentum of our actions. This process forms a constant of action in space and time that we see mathematically as the Planck constant h/2π.

I kind of logical psychology or a mathematical psychology must be used to actually understand things because everything is 100 percent subjective to you and surprisingly that point of view in reality is every bit as much as waiting and important and correct point of view about reality as the entirety of objective reality itself is because they are in direct balance with each other think to the miracle of relativity and paradoxes in strange loops and identities which are all the same thing and so is the present moment called now and consciousness and every singularity and every black hole as well as every singularity in every particle because those are also infinite densities they're just not as massive or is energetic or whatever as other ones and there's still a singularity just like the present moment is a temporal singularity caused by mind coming into being his consciousness which is a information singularity or awareness. Remember conceived and perceive or two hours of the same coin everything that we perceived was conceived somewhere. The data and information doesn't just come from nothing it actually comes from us learning what we are so we could teach ourselves what we are as Infinity so then we can create ourselves for ourselves to learn what we are from and then teach Infinity again and and everlasting eternal cycle and series of spirals because they're not closed loops as I already said. In reality all of these strange loops are intertwined in innermost and an infinitely size pattern of loops each one its own but tied into all the rest and all existing in the same place because that's what reality is there is no time or space or none of that it is one gigantic infinite pattern of vibration and each loop is just like a loop in a singularity or paradox or the point of the present moment now which is where our consciousness is focused. Each strange loop is relative to the size of intelligence or mind or information or whatever it is that it is in relation to the more intelligence or mind there is the larger the strange loop all the way from the smallest particle and Planck lengths all the way to the largest black hole in Galaxy on the universe itself because the universe itself is just a particle in the larger universe but at the same time every universe actually comes back upon itself causing itself to become a singularity which to help the infinite number of strange loops it once again through expansion and growth and time and other things becomes its own source as it makes the ultimate strange loop for all existence which is actually all part of the same structure it's pattern or fluctuation. Bernard car is very intelligent and he has a good on reality I got a lot of respect for him and I got a lot of respect for many of you my most respected physicist is of course Rodger Penrose cuz his idea is the closest to reality as I see it. It's funny because a lot of businesses say there can't be anything smaller than Planck length yet is singularity is smaller than that. And that is what matter comes to. That Infinity is just as fast as the spatial it's important Infinity that surrounds you. Mine causes the present moment of now which is a temporal singularity or the mine time singularity that is the other half of quantum gravity or quantum relativity it is the opposite mathematically to the equations of relativity the Einstein created but if you reverse some of the polarities and some of the orders of operation and such you end up with equations that make exact perfect sense when you substitute the value of space with what I termites reminder time or the temporal singularity or you can call it movement or identity because everything is causal to another thing and the most simplest of things most elegant thing you could think of possible which is something you guys like to say all the time elegant well actually reality comes down to the most elegant of terms because it all starts out with just movement self nothingness Infinity love and from a religious perspective it's still a very logical thing to realize that God being infinite in size and in duration still is not infinite in number and to be all-knowing would still have to divide itself into an infinite number of finite units to learn each thing so he can createand besides that being the only person in existence forever when no one else there and nothing to do as well because once you are everything you can't be anything new or go anywhere else in fact you are nothingness at this point but that would be the ultimate hell and that's what they speak of when they talk about hell it's separate and it's from all other things for eternity and that's what God would have said that the unity but since God had to learn everything about what existence is which is infinite number of things that meant God always have company and plus God can't get bored living for eternity of every time God incarnates as a mortal person in all its infinite variety it gets amnesia so it never knows what life's going to shoot at it because it doesn't remember s*** except this life usually. That is the point of everything. That's what they call in krishna's pastimes. It's allegory about how an internal being wouldkeep yourself busy and interested in living and not die of eternal boredom. All these things are necessary. And since subjectivity is just as important as objectivity because objectivity is just group subjectivity or subjectivity that we all agreed on. Because of the relativity of each one of our own identities being a strange loop or singularity paradox. So since subjectivity is just as important as objectivity as objectivity is just group subjectivity or its subjectivity that we all agree on. Well the only thing that could possibly experience subjectivity or have any kind of subjective existence is something that is aware of such subjectivity because that is the very nature of the concept and this is the very first round of existence because subjectivity is what gives identity and that's what causes identity to come into being. From the pool of potential witch is objectivity isn't that funny looking at objectivity as the potential part and not subjectivity. But in fact that's how reality is look at quantum physics objectivity is the part that has potentialities and all these other things and not absolute while subjectivity does. Amazing isn't it doesn't it just blow your mind. Because in that sense of the word subjectivity is far more real than objectivity is. Literally in a mathematical physical logical empirical type way of thinking literally subjectivity is something more real than objectivity because objectivity comes down to quantum physics which involves probabilities while subjectivity comes down to experience or certainty or as I should say a a measurement decision or is it because once an event happens it's done it's concrete. That is experience by subjectivity not objectivity. That is the wave function collapsing.
