    Nice job. I built Yachts for 15+ years. i was the TDS (Teak deck system) crew lead for a few of the years and you can buy or make a hot-knife with a squared tip and easily cut the rubber out. another more manual but simple way is to start by cutting the edges free all the way down to the sole, and sometimes at a 45 degree from both sides, and then with a 1/4 inch chisel scrape the rubber off the sole. using a 3/16 inch sanding block, sand the teak edges and the sole down to fresh clean dry substrate. Vacuum, and lastly Acetone or MEK wipe. One thing is you never do a color restore sand job until you have the joints refilled. which leads me to the caulking of the deck, after the solvent wipe, mask each and every joint ensuring all edges are tight and sealed. Use a pneumatic or power caulk gun and do a section that you can tool smooth before it skins over. I use a plastic spreader with a 5/16 or so half circle gouge removed. (the grove should just barely be wider than the joints).
    when the joint is filled, taking care not to cause more work by spreading it all over the teak, strike the joints with the tool by keeping the groove at a slight angle pulling the tool through the TDS. when and only when it is dry all the way to the sole you can then unmask and sand down to the fresh teak. I use a floor sander with 80 grit, then 120. I hand sand with a DA down to 220grit. now you have a beautiful new Teak deck!
    Idc if this gets read or not. It was a nice trip down memory lane. if someone gained anything from it even better! and if you read it all. CHEERS!

      Wow. What a great skill set to have. And no doubt a fine feeling of accomplishment after you overhauled a teak deck in need of repair.That said, as gorgeous as a teak deck can look, I'd never buy a boat that had one, just because of all that work involved...you know, 'cos there's nothing else on a sailboat that needs work 😂

    Well, I for one am very impressed with Willet Marine, their knowledge and their attention to detail!
    Not sure I could cope with the prospect of having to remove and then replacing the caulking yet it is undoubtedly the right thing to do! Plus all the sanding and, I suspect, application of some sort of coating - oil, wax, varnish, synthetic goop etc
    As always: admirable video!
    Health and happiness to the Admiral and her cabin boy

    Seeing you squeeze into a locker, reminds me how I've become fitter and more flexible clambering on/off/around the boat in recent weeks, preparing to launch, boat yoga doesn't need a guru, it is dictated by the things in obscure spaces that need attention. Being accustomed to boring moulded in non-slip decks I am in awe of the work involved in reonvating a teak deck. Perhaps it's an opportunity to rebed/renew some deck fittings, with trusty butyl tape.

  • @Tomm9y
    @Tomm9y Před 15 dny

    Regarding the Willet Shed, a great spcae to carrying out the work. I mourn the lack of planning controls to preserve boat yards, boat sheds, these are vital waterside amenities, yet waterside land is too often being developed into apartment blocks, while the marine industry and boating need more space to store and work on boats.

  • @bdphourde
    @bdphourde Před 21 dnem

    If you can find an older file, bend the tang backwards toward the other end. The tang can be used down in the groove to scrape out the leftover caulk. Bend and shape to suit the task and you can make it almost as wide as the groove. It will work well as a pull scraper to clean out the channel. A sharp leading edge on both sides will help to cut the caulk as you scrape the inside of the channel. I agree nothing dresses a boat, in my opinion, like a beautiful teak deck. I really regretted having to remove mine but it was too thin to salvage.
    I hope Carly & Hudson are doing much better. I know Hank is. Has he been more receptive to all the attention Hudson's been getting?

    CZcams should limit how much time a CZcamsr is allowed to point the camera at their own face. I did not see any of the restoration process. But I sure saw this guy's face a ton. Wow. Me me me me me! "Do not recommend channel". This is not a pod cast, it is a fix it video, we didn't see any fix-it stuff.
    If you like boat projects I recommend 'My First Boat". I do not know that guy, this is just raw appreciation for a true content provider. He shows what he's fixing, not his face. He fixes a thing and has voice-over the video explaining it. He does not point the camera at his face and describe what he will do, we actually get to see him do it.

      @@CadohaAdventures I was being facetious. It is horrible to watch these kids' point the camera at their face for minutes at a time. It is bad form and very self-centered.
      Usually, it happens after a content provider runs out of content. They'll start doing Q&A's.
      Thats when I stop watching. Go make a podcast.
