    A big hello from us and Widget. This video is focusing on his first day home.
    He is currently catching so many Z's next to me as this uploads, so he is feeling a lot more setted now than on his Gotcha day.

    I'm on my 3rd greyhound, I take the old ones, that are overlooked, they are so lovely to have. One horribly abused,starved 10yr old dumped outside the rescue. I just happened to be there, with my 2 dogs. They said he'd die, a week to a month. Bruce had 3 happy years with us. Gentle, loving, sweet and although my heart broke when he passed, I've never regretted Bruce.

      That's wonderful of you to take in the older ones. You have a good heart. Sorry about Bruce. I bet he was a great guy.

      I've lost so many "Bruce's" over the years, it never gets easier..... and I would not want it to, because that would mean I no longer cared. So you move on to the next "Bruce" and hope to make their last years good ones. If you succeed in that, that heartbreak upon loosing them was worth it.

      That''s extremely kind of you Robert. We have just rescued 5 Greyhounds and we have 2 10 year olds that we really need to find a home for as soon as possible. Would this be something you would be interested in. It is very difficult to find someone to take on an older dog. Kind regards. Rob

    Oh, so handsome, and such a beautiful dog breed. I have a black whippet/greyhound, and he's just like Widget in looks, movement, behaviour, like a mini Widget. These beautiful dogs hide their feelings, but they feel deeply. Sensitive. So glad Widget has a loving home and family.

    Congrats on your beautiful Widget! My first racer was also a gorgeous black houndie. It’s amazing how much they blossom in the first year at home. I’m so sad we no longer have greys available in the US. We’ve had atleast one for 22 years and now are forced to consider other sighthound breeds when we adopt again. You will adore Widget!

      @@jessethabarber If you know any Southeastern groups with hounds available I would love to know who to call. Our group in Birmingham, AL placed 975 hounds a year but are now permanently closed. The closet group in ATL has only 4 hounds available and wait lists are now 2 years long. Almost all the remaining groups have a rule that you have to live within 2 hours in case the hound gets lost & they need to help find them. We’ve been active in the Greyhound community for 22 years. I have spoken with all my contacts & have been told to go ahead and get on a few wait lists now if we want one within the next 2-3 years. We were also told that the groups would chose our dog instead of us choosing one we like and our remaining hound likes.

      @@aliciahowell9617 I'm nowhere near there, I'm in Rhode Island, New York is a few hours away from me. There are a few places there, with hounds. I'm not sure how it works with being so far away though.

    • @aliciahowell9617
      @aliciahowell9617 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jessethabarber Darn! I got excited for a moment. We found a couple groups in Florida but they all had the 2 hr rule. I asked if they could make an exception if the leader of our now closed group (who drove hounds all the way to Wyoming and Canada and knows all the groups leaders) vouched for us and would take responsibility if a jailbreak occurred. I know GPA requires any bounces to go back to the original group and they have to be accounted for life. We are considering getting a Galgo from Spain but need a hound that will get along with our 90lb lap dog Atticus. Or perhaps a Silken Windhound. My husband isn’t a big fan of the long hair though. We have a soft spot for XXL goofy boys with previous hock break since they are so hard to place between their size and concern over Vet bills. Both my boys have been 90lb and had broken hocks. My dad likes to joke that they were/are ponies not pups. I would love to adopt a Deerhound or Borzoi but both are rare around here.

      @NattieChristopher-Eilidh Thank you for your kind &helpful advice. We actually found a group in Knoxville (GALT) who gets a handful of hounds at a time fr9m the tracks in West Memphis and Wheeling , WV. We applied with all the groups left in TN, GA, MS and the FL panhandle but many refuse to adopt to anyone more than 2 hours away. Most groups require hounds be returned to them if they owner can’t care for them so they keep a minimum distance to keep from having to absorb the costs of transporting hounds great distances. Our closed adoption center director vouched for us and got our application quickly evaluated. We went up to Knoxville (4hour drive from home and adopted a gorgeous, big boy HKF Big Red Boy who we named Archibald. He was only 18 months old and failed to place in his his maiden class races and we are delighted with him. He’s been with us almost a year and has already learned 10 verbal commands and 6 sign language commands. I’m hoping to get him certified for Pet Therapy volunteer work. I will certainly keep your recommendation in mind when we adopt again. Thank you!

    Greyhounds are like potato chips, you can’t just have one, get him a friend , they love the company, we had 4 at one point. But the two we have now are like peas in a pod.
    It can take up to 12 months before they really settle in .

      Greyhounds are awesome. They are very smart . we would have to spell out things so she wouldn't get excited. That lasted like 2 times only. They fo love to run. I would ride my bike around the neighborhood with her on a long leash. This way she could run fast, and we both got exercise. She was such a good girl.

    The biggest misconception regarding greyhounds is that they like to run . Which is true to some degree . They are bred to run , but in reality they only run maybe twice a day ( races) , and if they don't win they are either killed or sold . In actuality they are giant couch potatoes, more than willing to just lie around and with their family (pack) . I know I have a friend that owned 2 beautiful dogs , they spend most of the day lounging around and asking for cuddles . U do need a fenced in yard so they can exercise , cause if they c a squirrel ..or a rabbit ..or a cat they will chase it . U also have to teach them how 2 go up and down stairs as they are almost never trained for that . Their whole life revolves around their crate and the track .

    • @momtoty
      @momtoty Před měsícem +1

      @robertwashburn1085 If greyhounds stop winning, not all win races by the way, they are NOT killed or sold. They get retired and go home with their racing owner or get placed in an adoption group to get adopted. If they were killed when they stop winning, there would be none to adopt or none to continue breeding. Think about that> Now isn't that a dumb comment you made? Yes it is.

    Dogs do not get adopted, they get rehomed. Also Gotcha Day refers to the day a child is adopted, not a dog. Children are not dogs. Highly offensive.

      I can't believe u can turn such a beautiful moment of a dog getting a home into a nasty comment. I personally prefer dogs and children to most adults cause they are much more genuine and filled with love, acceptance and hope. As mosr get older it seems like they become sour like a lemon. I'm sorry u have turned into a lemon and I hope u can find peace in ur life.
