Very good talk by Ms. Vaidya. Thank you for putting the facts straight. My ancestors were from Goa. Having faced the brunt of atrocities committed by the portuguese church, they migrated down south to Karnataka for survival. Still in this day and age, we pay a visit to Goa ocaasionally and pay our respects and seek blessings of our Kuladevata. Memories can not be erased. Still awaiting for the church to offer apologies for their terrorist activities against humanity. World over, the church has committed similar atrocities in the name of religion.

@biju joze History is history. First and foremost we needn't slander anyone in any form. However an introspection is paramount. If you take world history, the Church (and hence Christian rulers) has been the most violent. It's only in context of the Indian subcontinent and Asia at large that Islam and Islamic rulers have been the most violent. So let us not shy away from that fact.

    • @saaamaak
      @saaamaak Před 5 lety +3

Christianity came to India, from Israel, centuries before it landed in the shores of Europe or America.
St Thomas (one of 12 apostles of Jesus) himself a convert from jewism, converted Hindus in 13 AD by faith alone, not by sword. What is wrong in sharing ones best religious practices? and conversion by self-will of the person wishing to convert, isn't a crime
So calling Christianity a western religion, and that it was thrust on Hindus everywhere in India isn't true.

Thank you Shefali Vaidya for this excellent talk, recounting history as experienced by Indians. This is a powerful reminder that whether it is the oppression by the Muslims or oppression by the Christians, there is no difference at all. In today's India, we have strong Muslim and Christian lobbies who have once again incentivised NOT being Hindu, and rewarded the convertees. Your talk should serve as a powerful jolt to those people still imagining some sort of secular utopia when India is dominated by these murderous cults.

No amount of apologies and compensation by the Pope of Rome, King or the countrymen of Portugal can ever help forget, forgive or wipe the slate clean.

Unfortunately, current situation seems to be kind of similar to what the portuguese managed to achieve in Goa. Being Hindu seems to be a reason for attracting attention and discrimination.. Ex : RTE act inherently targeting "non-minority" schools only, Interference in Temple management, taking away the offerings made to the deity and using it for all kinds of non-temple causes, Courts actively taking up PILs on matters related to Hindu traditions, festivals and encouraging reform but deferring similar movements in non-majority populations. Looks like we have not learnt from history. This talk should help all right thinking individuals to introspect and draw conclusions from the scary parallels that seem to be emerging. Excellent lecture. Really enjoyed. Here In Brazil there was also an inquisition, between 1560 and 1775, but there were never any "autos de fé." The Church appropriated the property of converted Jews and settlers accused of practicing sodomy and witchcraft. It generated, however, a mentality that still exists today, of whistleblowing, of gossip, the idea that power can naturally be cruel to those who do not follow its rules. Many people complain about these characteristics of Brazilian culture, but they cannot relate them to the inheritance of the Inquisition. Your talk helped me to understand this relationship better.

Ms Vaidya has done an excellent job chronically exposing to those that care and have their heart in the right place - the atrocities committed by the Catholic Church and the missionaries - converting the Hindus my ancestors to the Christian faith. This period of the Inquisition has tarnished the name of the Jesuits - and leading the way to form the Inquisition and execute the atrocities - St Francisco Xavier. One Hindu remarked - why are there not more Christians - commenting on this page - the reason is simple - they have not heard the truth - and more they are not concerned about the situation in hand. A Cherokee has commented his tribe was treated the same way as Ms Vaidya explains to us - all. I lived in Goa and know a lot about what Ms Vaidya is talking about. Some Christians who have studied for their Masters and higher the History of Goa and the role of the Inquisition. The shame of this action is known to many Goan Catholics - however, after all these years - hundreds of years many of the so called converts have not be comfortable with their conversation. So many simple have abandoned the Church and more after learning about the atrocities. The ancient books recited by heart by the Brahmin priests and other commentaries written is Sanskrit - now translated reveal more - and in this digital world - as we see with the CZcams presentation - many will now support a revolution - to stand tall and represent - more, with one's heart in the right place. A documentary must be made and distributed to all the libraries, colleges, universities, temples, discussion and forums held and light shed - where there is abject darkness. Near Ponda I met some Buddhist monks way back in 1968 and learned about these monks and how they travelled from Goa to Siri Lanka and beyond. Of interest in the make up of a Goan - in music, as teachers, as judges, as leaders, as stellar workers in Government - all over the world - they have accomplished a lot and are respected. When I lived in Goa - I gravitated to the " thali " and love to chicken xacuti prepared by the Hindus. I encouraged the Hindus to play field hockey, and cricket - noticed most loved football aka soccer - women and men. The Jesuits can be mandated to create an institution to showcase the Inquisition - let the truth be told. Of interest the DNA sample can be taken from the remains of St Francisco Xavier from Spain - a Basque - and reveal if the remain are his or that of a Buddhist monk. I would often visit the temples in Goa - the Brahmin priests would stick to the mundane - and not engage on topics - such as the forced conversation - and many were intimated that I was interested in such a topic. I have travelled all over the world - and Goans - be they from any denomination - are more united outside Goa than inside Goa. The Chief Minister of Goa the very first one - was my friend - and encouraged me to play cricket for his team. When Chief Minister Dyanda Bandodkar ( I may not have his name correctly spelled) most of Goa - was sad. His cremation took place at the Mir-a-Mar beach - a ritual that would never have happened if the Portuguese were ruling Goa. My family have a few revolutionaries who fought the Portuguese - some had to flee - and others stayed back until they passed away. I normally do not like to debate on such a topic as the Inquisition, forced conversion, torture, rape, stealing property and a host of other nefarious activities - conducted with intent by the Portuguese. Paradoxically - the President of Portugal today is a Goan - he even visited his village - and seems to be open. It is time to send him a brief - chronologically stating what Ms Vaidya has revealed - and set the record - straight. The United Nations, the Court in The Hague, many Foundations that have taken the cause of genocide up - around the world - must at least know the facts. I knew some of the facts - my parents were open to the Hindus - and we had many good Hindus friends. However, this history is one of pain, trauma, guilt, nightmares, trials nd tribulation - fleeing from one's ancestral home - to some temporary safe haven. Those that fled men and women - were willing to die - for their faith - and their culture - going back thousands of years. Today - we have educated people ready to listen and more to right the wrong. We must continue to have forums - to discuss the content - a documentary should set the standard - with vetted facts. Facts stated by Ms Vaidya. Brahmin priests, scholars, historians of repute - on the subject of Inquisition and Goa's dark history - all vetted by a team of experts. More HIndus and if an exception is made - consensus from the team of experts - taken into account for inclusion. I was told at least in Bardez - those Catholic Churches - built by the river - Moira, Aldona, Mapsa, Panjim, Margao and so on - once on those very sites stood temples. This history and a vetted curricula must be introduced in the schools - the truth told - light shed - where there is abject darkness.

It was really painful, because I did not get to know that part of my family, and my choice to live as my Cherokee ancestors did was taken away from me. I would have chosen to live this way rather than *this* white mess I've found myself in today. I am having a REALLY, REALLY difficult time getting myself back to reading the history of Christian and especially Islamic conquests of Bhāratavarṣa, because the saṃskāras from my ancestors are there (epigenetics).
It is really hard! Look at the angry looks on the faces in the audience. I went through the same thing in the early part of life. Your people are still alive and moving forward. Mine are largely gone. Traditionalist Cherokees are reduced to maybe under 1-2%. Even then, their knowledge system was infiltrated with Jesus coming into the picture in 1955. Our fate was sealed, and we have become "museum-ized." Period...

[Enrique] Dussel ("A History of the Church in Latin America", Grant Rapids, Eerdmans, 1981) gives a sophisticated analysis of the clash of cultures which followed the Spanish conquest of America. Its unambiguous result was that “the Hispanic civilisation virtually annihilated the Amerindian civilisations in America. The indigenous political and military organisations were obliterated, and the Amerindian elite and their institutions of education and culture were destroyed. What was left of the Indian community after being decimated in part by epidemics, wars, and inhumane treatment was totally unhinged from the ancient context which the norms and the organisation of the Amerindian cultures provided.

absolutely, we need to talk about this, my grandparents migrated to africa, then my mother came to the uk, and eventually had to bring my grandparents here too, all of my family are in lot's of different countries around the world, except goa. my family do not talk about the past, they never handed me a book about the inquisition, they are very strong in their catholic roots and i am the one asking these questions, buying the books and only at my age 45 am learning how ruthless the portuguese were to us and the jews. after all that was done to jesus, this is what the church did to convert? plus they hid their paedophile priests to face canon law, simply moving them from one country to another covering more crimes. there was a group in 2015 fighting for a public apology from the church for this inquisition, did this ever happen? i am so outraged, when i married, i wanted to keep my goan name because of my identity and goan culture as i married an irish and austrian person, but i cannot put my name to a religion that is responsible for mass torture or killing any more. i am already a vegan, actually, you can place blame on our current pope for that change, he was asked to go vegan for lent as he speaks up so much about climate change, a little girl asked him to do this and his response annoyed me so much, i thought ok let me go vegan if this man cannot do this for our creatures and climate change, it's now 2 years and i am still vegan, further to this a few things have led me to wanting to convert instead to jainism, i cannot pray to saints like francis xavier, having seen his letter to john iii, this is no small thing for me, my family are catholic fanatics who led me to believe the portuguese coming to goa was a good thing, for our education, our language etc..but how so? if all my family fled goa! i want to know who were we, what name did we have prior to taking a portuguese name, i will never find that out, we must encourage the truth about the portuguese catholics, doesn't matter it was long ago, just have to look at how many times the poor jewish people have been treated like this in almost every country they have tried to make a peaceful life in, it will continue unless we right the wrongs in these religious fanatics.

Do you think your parents are not smart? They were living in Goa when the Portuguese were their not you.... why they left Goa?
*WHY a good percentage of Goans including non Christians left Goa after the annexation of Goa by India?*
Where did a lot of these Goans go? I tell you, to Portuguese territories (Moçambique and Portugal itself) If Portugal was so bad to Goans why they went to Portuguese territories?
Inquisition was a bad thing off course, in Goa on paper it was abolish in 1774
The reality was that after the Lisbon tsunami 1755 the Inquisition was decapitated by the Portugal prime-minister which made it powerless in Portugal and other territories for ever. What happened after king D. Jose death, was that in Goa it was created another type of "inquisition" in 1778, which had no power other then passing fines, and that made people return to Goa, because if I 'm not mistaken 40% of Goan population by the time India annexed Goa was non-christian.
In Portugal the inquisition was even worse... but remember people were burning witches in other countries in Europe and they didn't have inquisition there. And let me ask you something: weren't Indians burning widows when the Portuguese arrived in India?

Part of the problem why Hindus were and are suffering is because they have not learned t o protect them selves and their way of life. I strongly feel that even today every one in India should have compulsory military service and should be ready to defend whenever a need arise. Remember the world has not changed much.

It was painful for Hindu like me to hear this well researched account .I haven't heard this before but I believe it very close to the truth. She also mentions that many slaves of Hindus and Muslims adopted Christianity to liberate themselves from slavery.I feel ashamed to know that Hindus also had slaves .We Hindus are so divided that it should be our endeavour to bring them together and that is the only way to save our faith.Let us learn from the past and be alert and let these things not repeat again.

If you are a true hindu, boycott all christian Institutions. Give up suit/boot, and wear dhoti/langot and celebrations in Western style like cutting cake with knife., instead cut ladoo with Khoi ta. Stop patronising western music and dance. All of these are part of Portuguese legacy in Goa.
