      @clg632012 the only amount probably lost was the gold that stuck to the belt in all actuality he wouldnt be that dumb to forget the bucket and if he was he probably swept the floor and collected it after by panning it out in water

    • @Jackofafewtrades
      @Jackofafewtrades Před 4 lety +10

      @@ghosthunter0404 You wouldn't pan it out in water, you would refine it using sulphuric acid, like they do in the jewellery trade. Workshops and jewellers generally clean their spaces either once a week or before swapping metals (mixing metals is bad juju) or even every morning, depending on how pedantic you're being. They collect the metal and refine it. I worked with an old man that rented a workshop that had belonged to a jeweller that died (or something) and he tore up the carpets and refined the gold in them. Used that to buy the majority of his starting tools.

    Something you might consider doing with the shavings. Carve out a design in a handle, mix the gold into epoxy and fill the carving. Sand smooth and you have some beautiful gold inlay

    • @SonsOfLorgar

      Or just use a clean soldering pen to melt the gold dust into the grooves before sealing it in with the epoxy

    • @rallywagon261
      @rallywagon261 Před 6 lety

      you could do that, but the problem with melting gold the applying it to the wood is that wood starts to burn at about 150 degrees C. Gold melts just above 1050 C. This isnt ideal as it will char the wood under the gold, which will give it a flimsy foundation and eventually lead to the inlay coming out. You might lose a little bit of gold in the sanding process, but when mixed into the epoxy, at least you dont need to worry about losing all of the gold.

    • @benjaminlorrig9299

      Not possible due to the melting points or each of the metals. Silver melts at 940 degress Celsius and platinum wouldn't even have become dull orange at that temperature. Also platinum is extremely hard to weld with other metals besides platinus metals. As for the gold/silver combo, the silver would melt into the gold over prolonged exposure to heat and you would get electrum.

    Alec I actually have an idea on what to do with the gold filings that you saved so that none is wasted. Try to get a little crucible so you can melt it down, pour it out in a long string (probably make a little mold) so you basically have a gold wire. And then make a standard wood handle for the little gold knife, and carve inlay into it and lay in the gold wire!
    I think that would be phenomenal!

      Hey, I can help with some input from the jewelry and lost wax casting industry!
      Reclaiming precious metals is also a rather costly process, but super common for every business or even single artisans that deal with gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Lots of chemicals, lots of testing for reclamation percentages, and lots of labor. In the end, it's not a 1 to 1 exchange rate when dealing with dust collection, but comes very close.
      Another annoying aspect: The 'dollar' amount of gold fluctuates so often in a single day, that most shops doing this service give you a fixed rate in terms of what they find as the 'cost' of gold, and often times, they won't even touch it if its not of a certain troy ounce amount!

      Allan Harwood Awesome thanks, I wrote another comment talking about Cody's Lab(don't know if you watch him or not), he does a lot of fine metal refinement. • @aehink143
      @aehink143 Před 6 lety +3

      Oh yes, Corys Lab gave a WONDERFUL demonstration on the process. And honestly, it's nearly similar, but with additional testing mid refinement to make sure allotments were in specs. We'd test samples in house, send a sample to the clients testing of choice, as well as a third party blind testing, multiple times. Range of purity always within 0.5 to 2.5%. WICKED close. Losses needed to be very carefully explained.
      Honestly despite all those annoyances, I loved the work. Minus the hazardous chemicals. I was always more a lover of the lost wax casting process.
      SCIENCE SIDE NOTE: Potassium cyanide makes yellow golds REALLY shine. Just a quick 60 second dip does wonders.

    Would the gold actually scale or would it just alloy with whatever it picked up from the anvil?

    So this is the guy that Bond villains go to have their weapons of choice made.

    Fun fact, the stickiness of the gold is it welding to your anvil.

      shane Flood Nope, the wold welds itself to the steel because it has very little oxidation on it’s surface.

      I'm almost certain it is doing that because of the borax left over from the original pour

    If you wanted to make something useful out of it, you could make a letter opener. You don't need or desire a sharp edge. You might be able to work harden it enough that the opener would hold its shape without bending when slitting an envelope.
    The biggest problem is keeping contaminating materials out of the gold. You need polished tools and working surfaces.

    I was cringing with every file stroke. Five dollars per stroke, that's more expensive than a high class prostitute.

      Also come to Detroit. "high class" hookers run about $75 usd an hour. $150 if you want to a raw session of will I contract aids?

      No, Filip, the small amount that sticks to the anvil and the shavings have a very high value, due to the fact that gold has such a high price per gram.
