Keep in mind that the Google Assistant in Allo is not the same as the Google Assistant on a Pixel phone. People discovered that some questions can only be processed by Allo and vice-versa.

I would disagree with you and would say that the Google assistant you are using us the one found in Allo and not the one found in the Google Pixel. To make a real test you need and Pixel Phone and a one that use Cortana by default like the o e you are using.

Cortana can do many things, some of the main things are : Cortana always monitor where you go, who calls you, let your another device know about your phone's current position, can make call/message or more actions from PC to any device via Cortana with phone. Traffic update on your regular office/collage road and will warn you about the current situation about traffic against time. It is more informative then other. Cortana also behaves better with 3rd party app like opening/editing/closing/locking your device/suggesting.
This app is available on Windows/IOS/Android.
Commonsense : Cortana slower then G-Assistant, because Cortana loads image with articles from internet which G-Assistant don't. Download speed of a 2mb file and a 2kb file will never be same.
Overall: G-Assistant is straight forward and very serious to question and give answer about only one or two word. And Cortana is more creative, downloads the image, description and explain the whole things. The main topic/subject highlights larger and more then clear then G-Assistant. G-Assistant is like a statue, chatting to a automated app like 'Simsimi' not feels like real world.
Last year Siri stole a bunch of things from Cortana like place around, booking hotel, news/sports update and more.

Just wanted to point out, on the Cortana fails, some of them were because she didn't hear you correctly (such as "Tech Auto" instead of TechAltar in the Email one)
that's exactly my point during the email test. I have a contact called TechAltar in my address book, and I wanted to see if I can somehow make her understand an unconventional name like that. They both understand James and John and other simple names, but they struggle with more complex ones
Why did you ask "Who is Mamamoo" and then complained about Google giving you the members? You specifically asked for that. If you ask "What is Mamamoo" they will give you the band's information.
And next time, PLEASE get the real Google Assistant, Allo's preview is not the same. Like with Mamamoo's question, Allo will give you 3 people, while Google Assistant give you 4

Công Nguyễn Not to mention Google Assistant gives you a number of buttons at the bottom, which users can slide over even more options (even the actual search results). Remember you are using Assistant in Allo which is a conversation app. So if he was using a Pixel phone, then it would knock Cortana out of the park. Also if your GPS is not enabled, then Google Assistant cannot put into context some of the nearby locations with searches.

You need to use a Pixel to make a real test. It's clear that Allo's Google Assistant is different from Pixel's.
I used Cortana quite a lot in my phone when Windows Phone was still available. But only in the house, where nobody can hear her and hear me. When my hands would be otherwise occupied, I found her very useful in reading and answering text messages and sending emails and doing simple searches. I actually miss Cortana, and my Windows Phone.
Hey Martin, Just checking... are you a Microsoft fan? Quite a few of your videos are focused on MSFT and their product strategies.
I have been using Android for 5 years, windows phone for 1.5 years and Apple for 6 months now and I find Cortana(Microsoft) to be the best comparatively. Neither of these virtual assistants is at the point where we could rely on them completely, but knowing when to use them certainly makes things easier and faster.

1. You're doing a test on Google now and not Google assistant
2. I have Google now and Android 4.4 and I get pictures and links if I ask "How tall is mount Everest?" so I don't know how you manage to get text only.

Google assistant is only available on pixel phone and what he was supposed to do was dominate google by using allo app in his sony phone and even tho cortana cannot compete with allo which can just search anything faster then cortana. poor windows 😂😂😂

That was the Google Assistant, I assume ported on. Its clear that Google Assistant is OK, but not the revolution fans claim. I think, as the reviewer says, he will turn it off, so will most consumers; fun for a few days and then we just use a search engine. I love Dragon Dictate as it is useful, allowing you to dictate reports, emails, messages; far better than this ~gimmick~. But we all have to start somewhere and I am sure it will get better, and in a few years it may be more useful?

Google Allo's assistant cannot perform some system tasks or tasks like email, text messaging outside of Allo, etc on non-Pixel phones. For this reason, in this comparison, the Google Assistant is at a disadvantage.
You gave us MKBHD comparison which is compared Google Assistant on pixel and you did it with Sony, Google Assistant "conversation" works in pixel only, at least you have to wait for the update or that's what makes pixel so fucking expensive 😂😂😂

aim buzz I played with a pixel in a Verizon store. Played with Google Assistant and lets just say I'm underwhelmed. For me it the same experience beside not being able to like open a app or something.
I believe the appropriate phrase is "Apples to oranges.". To clarify a fair comparison would be against the google now app (with exception to context based questions) google assistant is more for conversation based interaction. (hence the dialogue bubbles and "search google" bubble specifically)

I had my pixel assistant on when you asked "play me a song by CHOPIN" and it heard it as "play me a song by SHOPPING" as well. But, when I asked the same question it worked as it should. It may just be a matter of how you say it in this case as your accent is a bit different than mine and it learns to work with the user more accurately as time goes on.

EPR89 it's Googles allo-app. it's a Messenger and there is a chat with the Google assistant as Preview. but the functions on Google Pixel Phones are different. also there is voice-feedback on the Pixel Phones.
+EPR89 it's not the actual Google Assistant app, but rather the Google Assistant within the Allo chat app. Same brain, but different interface, e.g. The Allo version doesn't talk out loud

It can't send emails when it's in Allo. On the Pixel, it can, but the Allo version is more limited.
And, the internal processing is different in the Pixel.

I tried the google assistant on the google pixel and sending an email works fine for me, as well as playing Music for Chopin, your assistant was about to do it, but it was asking you what app you wanted to use to play that music. The google assistant you are using looks like it's from google allo and not the full google assistant, because I also have sound on my google assistant.
I feel like people who say they're worried about "privacy" with voice assistants are the same people who are terrified to ask for ketchup at a restaurant.

hey. if you try the same question with a phone where G.A. can actually talk then it tells you what you want to know. again. bad review. you can't test two voice assistant and use one on the phone it was made for and use the other one on a phone that it was just simply hacked into

Try asking "What is Mamamoo" it will tell you "a korean band formed by.." Also for postal office, it was showing the closing time...and sometimes it shows both open and closing time
When does the post office CLOSE? well i will have to give the edge to cortana for listing the opening times...

A few big things for me... Cortana SPEAKS more when spoken to. Which is a feature you NEED when say, driving... I prefer Cortana for that very reason and I made a video (if you click my name) about the glaring omission of reading text messages over Bluetooth on android phones while WP did it with Cortana with no setup. Making the device MUCH better for driving as it turned the phone into a truly "hands free" device.
I want to try Cortana.. But.. Can I tell Cortana personal things about me that Won't be shared with the Internet crowd or Microsoft? For that matter.. can I do the same for Google Assistant?

There is something you may not have considered. When you first set up Cortana and I'm not sure about Allo, Cortana ask what your language and country is. So when your using a Chinese word it's likelihood for being understood is less because of the region and language that was selected in the setup.

Your Google assistant experience was nothing at all like on my Nexus 6P. this video made it look only marginally better than Siri.
Interestingly, even the more complex questions in the middle of the video worked just fine on my nexus 6p with google now - in german as well as in english (I set my default language to german). Seems like many of the context-related features of google assistand have been implemented into Google now.
How to download and use Google assistant on other smartphones?
Can you type queries into Google Assistant like you can with Cortana? I like the fact I can type into Cortana when I'm around people instead of talking to it.
Google Assistant did show close times for you, "Closing soon: 1:00 PM" and "Open until 2:00 PM" are shown because you asked when does the nearest post office CLOSE. If you tap on the card of one, it will show you map, ratings, opening times and at what times it's most crowded in there. Yet you still gave advantage to Cortana.
Besides, because this version of Assistant is bundled into a messaging app, it doesn't have access to the whole OS. Which means it won't launch your email app, because it's not what you're supposed to be asking for in a messaging app. That's what the OS-wide Assistant from Pixel is for.
The assistant in Allo is a half baked thing that is just a prototype. Use the Assistant in the Pixel

It doesn't give you pictures and more information because you're not using the default Google Assistant app: _the Google app_. Use Assistant on the Google app (formerly Google Now), not that.

The fact that these capabilities are present only in Pixel phones is an insult to Android OEMs. These capabilities should be built into stock Android and not confined to Pixel phones only. Stock Android fans must be angry, especially with the end of the Nexus program, the replacement Pixel is a skinned and customized version of Android (!). Windows Mobile allows OEMs to make full use of Cortana and it isn't confined to just 1st party hardware. Just correct me if my assumptions are incorrect.
Agreed, though it is supposed to be rolled out to partners with later updates! I'm currently working on a video explaining why the Pixel phone is a terrible idea exactly for this reason (and a few others) :P

Ich habe meinen Assistant jetzt von der Aktivierung durch “Ok Google” mit einer App auf das Drücken auf die Leiser-Taste gelegt. Die Leiser-Taste, weil ich die OnePlus Gestensteuerung nutze ubd deswegen keine Navigationstasten habe. Der Assistant aktiviert sich nur, wenn ich kurz-lang drücke, sonst steuert sich die Lautstärke wie gewohnt. Das stört im Alltag nicht, ist aber immer erreichbar wenn ich es brauche 👍🏼
Great test, I did try a few of these questions with the regular Google Now launcher and most of them seem to work. And your English is quite impressive if you are not a native speaker! The Chopin question gave you away, though. When you say "play a song BY Chopin (SHOW-pan)", it opens Google Music and does exactly that (provided you are subscribed to All Access or whatever they call it now).
You wanted Chopin... Windows gave you Porcupine Tree! Not quite there but at least Cortana's got good taste
excellent video! deep and nice comparison between cortana and Google assistant. I agree with you: by now, digital assistant need to improve, but at this moment I strongly prefer the way in which cortana gives information, although at the end she forgets the context. personally, I love the fact that Cortana speaks, so you don't have to watch the screen to get information. finally, I miss cortana on my Nexus 6P because Google Now is not as smart as cortana on my previous Lumia 930: for example, if I ask to call using speakerphone, Now asks me to unlock my phone, while Cortana does it, which is really good when I'm driving
The Google Assistant that's on the new Pixel phone also speaks out loud, and that should come to other Android phones soon too, btw :)

About mamamoo - you should ask "what is mamamoo" and, i think, Google would answer you in the way you wanted.
And about CHOPIN - did you say it right? I mean, it really was like "shopping". In addition, if you want it to understand Chinese tea name, i think you had to switch language because it tries to understand your English.
By the way i really like Cortana's horror stories and songs to put me to sleep and songs and jokes. It's a shame she can't speak my language (which is Russian).
As for the privacy - i actually turn them on because it's just easier (only with google cause it can speak Russian). I can add things to shopping list, i can ask him for directions, a can do really a lot of stuff.

You are right about Mamamoo. I just checked it and it works :D As for the other ones though, my point is exactly that I can't just say names with my voice without switching languages, but I could just type them out and Google / Bing would know what I'm looking for. Also, that is how you pronounce Chopin in Polish (he was from Poland) :)
