5 Types of Attraction You May Experience

  • Do you currently have a crush on someone? Are you in love? How about the interest in the psychology of attraction? Even though we are not here to discuss the science of attraction and how attraction happens in the brain, we are here to discuss the five types of attraction: sexual attraction, romantic attraction, sensual attraction, aesthetic attraction, and platonic attraction. Which of these types of attractions have you experienced so far? Are there any we missed?
    A platonic relationship is a close relationship between two persons in which sexual desire is nonexistent.
    Sensual Attraction is the desire to have physical, but not inherently sexual, contact with a specific person.
    Romantic Attraction is usually assumed to be bundled with sexual attraction, or that they are one and the same.
    Sexual attraction is pretty self explanatory.
    Aesthetic Attraction is the pleasure in the appearance of a specific person in the same way you might find a piece of artwork or pretty scenery.

      Now when it comes to communicating with society...those labels help in packaging so each individual can have an idea or "understand" and can somewhat be on the same page....but the error is that we are too fixated on the definitions rather than the experiencing.

    Another type of attraction that gets overlooked a lot is called altereous attraction. It's a type of attraction separate from platonic and romantic attraction characterized by the desire to be close to someone emotionally, or to be important to them. It can be hard to distinguish from platonic or romantic attraction because it can have elements of both, but basically if you feel a certain way for someone and you know it's not platonic but romantic doesn't really feel right either, you may want to consider altereous attraction. Anyway, thanks for making this video! It's really rare to see people talk about the different attractions so I'm glad y'all are 😊

    I feel like sensual attraction is more expansive than people define it. They tend to focus on the tactile aspect (touch) while sensuality involves things that engage all the senses. Sensual attraction could involve being drawn to someone's voice (raspy, low, musical, etc.), their form (slender, broad, tall, stocky, etc.) and how they move (graceful, languid, abrupt etc.), their smell (fragrance, natural, environmental, etc.), and so on.

    • @megansutton9699
      @megansutton9699 Před 3 lety +12

      Yeah as it’s SENSUAL so it should apply to more than just one sense (touch), I suppose everyone feels it differently, but it’s still the same

    • @halfofakitty
      @halfofakitty Před 2 lety +6

      Uh. That's aesthetic attraction. Sensual attraction needs to be sensual i.e. (non-sexual) touching hast to be desired. If you like someone's characteristics that is under appearances, aesthetics. You can also feel different types of attractions in different combinations. They don't have to be by themselves or in typical combinations.
      And some people do experience romantic attraction to such a low degree that it's close to being platonic. Romantic attraction doesn't have to involve wanting a relationship, it's an emotion, like the butterflies in your stomach and fuzzy feelings etc. But everyone's experience on that emotion varies, so not having one trait doesn't mean it's not romantic attraction. Similarly, some people may have sexual attraction but they do not desire a sexual relationship with said person they're attracted to.

    • @HeadDetectiveLassie
      @HeadDetectiveLassie Před 2 lety +18

      @@halfofakitty Sensual involves the senses. There are at least eight sensory systems, so it should be beyond just touch, one of many of the senses.
      Watching the hypnotic sway of hips or hearing a raspy voice in your ear or smelling the faint vanilla scent of cologne on cotton are all sensory experiences that could and should fall under sensual attraction.
      Aesthetic is mainly appreciating (visual) beauty. Sensual is an experience of touch, sight, smell, taste, sound, movement, etc.

    • @halfofakitty
      @halfofakitty Před 2 lety +3

      TLDR
      NO, aesthetics is not defined by looks. Officially the term is defined by beauty, which in turn is defined as "a quality or *combination* of qualities that gives pleasure to the *mind or senses* ." The last 3 paragraphs at the bottom are Wikipedia's definition of aesthetics which greatly outweighs that one word definition of the term. The bolded ARE under aesthetics.
      But under your logic tho, there would be no other forms of attraction then. And pairing words together can change the definition of a term, much like my afterthought below that is more synonymous with the word mental, rather than actual feelings. More accurately just a poor word choice when they were trying to come up with an opposite to physical (attraction). But it is a term already in use by allosexual people, so it's not like it should be a term that needs redefining necessarily.
      On a side note (this one isn't popular so it slipped my mind), 🤔 there is Emotional Attraction, which is an attraction to *who* someone is, and basically a sub type of aesthetic attraction. It sounds nitpicky, but the difference is obvious when it's felt. So gracefulness, swagger, etc. would fall under that. I would word aesthetic attraction as a pull to *look* at someone because of their appearance/demeanor, but emotional attraction as a *pull/admirants* toward them because of their personality / demeanor; *who* they are.
      Wiki:
      Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste, as well as the philosophy of art. It examines subjective and sensori-emotional values, or sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste.[2]
      Aesthetics covers both natural and artificial sources of aesthetic experience and judgment. It considers what happens in our minds when we engage with aesthetic objects or environments such as viewing *visual art, listening to music, reading poetry, experiencing a play, or exploring nature.* The philosophy of art specifically studies how artists imagine, create, and perform works of art, as well as how people use, enjoy, and criticize art. Aesthetics considers why people like some works of art and not others, as well as how *art can affect moods or even our beliefs.* [3] Both aesthetics and the philosophy of art ask questions like "What is art?," "What is a work of art?," and "What makes good art?"
      Scholars in the field have defined aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature".[4][5] In modern English, the term "aesthetic" can also refer to a set of principles underlying the works of a particular art movement or theory (one speaks, for example, of a Renaissance aesthetic).[6] Aesthetic in this sense has come to mean something like *the aura a given thing produces* , and is closely related to the slang term *"vibe".*

    0:58 "Squish!" I'm so happy you included that word in the Platonic attraction section. There are also other words created to describe the other attractions. For example a swish describes aesthetic attraction. And also Sensual attraction uses the word Lush however this one is very very rarely used.

  • @opprrer3328
    @opprrer3328 Před 3 lety +5

    I should show this video to my friends and family who don’t really understand my sitution as an asexual person.
    I’m panromantic, meaning I could have a romantic relationship with someone, no matter what their gender is. I don’t care about that. That way, I do feel romantic attraction.
    There are some people I just want to be friends with, although this is an attraction I haven’t really thought about. I have just made friends.
    If I ever get a lover, I do want to be near them. I want to hug, cuddle, hold hands, maybe even kiss idk. So I feel like I can definetely feel that type of attraction, but it’s nothing sexual.
    Aesthetic attraction, I feel this so much. It’s not people only, but also pictures, scenery, nature, whatever. So this is a clear yes. Some people also look very appealing to the eyes, but there’s nothing more - they just look nice.
    Lastly: sexual attraction. I have never been able to relate to adjectives like «hot» and «sexy», I just don’t. When I had a boyfriend, my friends asked me «what’s the dirtiest thought you’ve had about him» and I thought about it, and I noticed that I hadn’t thought about anything dirty with him. I told them that, and they were very surprised and didn’t believe me.
    I was with him for 4 months, and I never had a desire to have sexual contact with him or anything like it. In fact, us hugging was enough affection for me. I felt comfortable with that.
    I realized that something was up, when my friends talked about wanting to get «railed» by this and that person. I saw «sex education» series on netflix, and it greatly shows how someone want to be sexual with someone else. Also other teen series where that was all they wanted. I get it’s a series, but it’s based on teens thoughts and actions - and I’m supposed to be able to relate to this, but I can’t.
    Lastly, my mom did seem a bit surprised when I said to her «everyone cares about sex, I don’t get the big deal». She was surprised, yep. That’s how I came to teh conclusion I’m asexual. My friends still don’t quite get it, but that’s fine. I don’t get them either, lol

    • @outresru7751
      @outresru7751 Před 2 lety +1

      I can totally relate with the 5th part, the sexual attraction. When I was in school, my friends used to talk about guys ass and how they want that guy to kiss him or make our with him and they used to talk about sex all the time. I didn't enjoy it at all, and they thought I was weird because I didn't have any horny thoughts with the person I liked..
      when I like a person, idk I just love their vibe, their small quirks, their smartness or dumbness but I never think of kissing or hugging or making out with them 😂
      it's fine if I can do those things with them, but that's like the least thing I can think of, I thought I was at fault for not being able to "love" a person, with lots of self reflections, I realised it's okay to be like that.

    I think I might be ace. One moment when I doubted this was about a month ago when one of my classmates stood up in front of the rest of the class and I just couldn’t stop looking at them. I thought they were so beautiful. So I went back to thinking I wasn’t ace. But then I thought about that moment later and realized that I didn’t feel any desire to be physically close to that person, or be in a romantic or sexual relationship. So I’m pretty sure I’m asexual now.

    Thank you for making this video. It was always hard to explain all of this to myself and I feel better now after watching this.
    It’s so sad when romantic and sexual attraction do not align with each other. Like, I’m a girl and had boy crushes since I was a kid but then suddenly fell in love with a girl friend. For 5 years I had strong romantic feelings towards her but never even thought about doing anything sexual. Even now my first relationships ended, partly because me and my girlfriend never managed to develop genuine sexual attraction towards each other. I honestly feel so broken and keep wondering if there are any people like that here in this comment section? Tell me I’m not the only one :(

It's why I never had a crush based on that. Which over time I felt weird because every time I was asked hey do you have a crush on anyone I just said no. Then they didn't believe me and poked and prodded thinking i was to nervous to tell. For the longest time I thought I was weird and freak for not seeing what everyone else sees in each other. But over time I learned I'm not weird just have a different form of attraction compared to everyone else because of factors like a lower sex drive. Edit: We're dating now

    This really helps, because i thought there were only three types of attraction (romantic, platonic & sexual) when it comes to relationships. I'm ace and I actually feel a lot of sensual attraction towards my crushes 😂

    As an asexual person, now I have a video to show someone when I want to explain about types of attraction and how I can still have crushes and want romantic relationships without feeling sexual attraction towards anyone💕

      Validation that I can be in love with someone and not want a sexual relationship. Throughout my life I’ve fallen in love with people but didn’t want sex. My feelings were just as strong as those I’ve experienced for a sexual partner.
      I thought I was weird in this way and have been hesitant to talk about it. When I accepted my HSP-ness I figured that was the cause.
      Your video has helped me by providing a framework to describe these strong feelings...without getting caught up in labels or feeling like there must be something wrong with me.
      Thank you.

    i feel a ton of sexual, sensual, some aesthetic, and of course platonic attraction to a lot of my friends- but never romantic.
    it took me quite a while to figure out i was aromantic bc i feel platonic and sensual attraction so strongly while only sometimes accompanied with sexual and aesthetic, so it always confused me when id flirt with people so much and immediately back down when proposed with the idea or possibility of dating them

    Thanks, I really needed it. Could you do a video further explaining the difference between platonic and romantic attraction? I would be really thankful.

    I want to give big thank you, Psych2go!!! 💞 I've watched your channel for few months now, I've learned so many new things and some videos have helped me! I really like your many animation styles and ideas, and one big plus is that your videos has real information, some other videos doesn't, and it's annoying. I just don't know how to explain how much I love this all content you've made 🤧❣️ Thanks!

    Hi! I'm a straight female and I recognized two of the five attractions mentioned in the difference between how I feel seeing attractive men VS attractive women.
    When I'm attracted to a man, I often feel sexual attraction but when I see a beautiful woman I feel aesthetic attraction. I didn't know there was a word for it before but I was pretty close since I often described the beauty of these women as close to the beauty of art. These women are satisfying to look at, well proportioned, well made but I don't feel any urge to do anything sexual with them. I can tell how beautiful I find a woman but it will often be based on more "objective" criterias than for men.
    So yeah, that's my experience with distinguishing these two kinds of attraction.
