The longest I kept an orchid alive for was a month, which was my first.
My second? Dead in a week 😅
You gotta get your hands on a Phalaenopsis schilleriana and a Phalaenopsis Liodoro "Sweet Memory". The schilleriana has gorgeous pink blooms with a beautiful, light, rosey fragrance that are paired with leaves that have gorgeous silver mottling. The Liodoro "Sweet Memory" has lime green leaves that contrast well with their gorgeous peachy-pink flowers that give off a delicious, citrusy fragrance that isn't too strong or overbearing. You'd loveeee both I believe :D
DO NOT cut the Mini Mark spike when blooms end, summer blooming phals rebloom on the same spikes year after year (so only cut when it dries out). With any luck in a few years you will have several spikes, all with lovely blooms ❤
Pertaining to your “roots sitting in water” comment, it doesn’t matter. The roots that grow into the reservoir adapt to be water roots so they can stay submerged. The problem is when you change the environment around the roots. Ex: if you have an orchid rooted in moss and you change it to bark or leca, they will rot. If they are in leca and you repot it into something else, they will rot. That’s just how orchids are. So whatever grows outside the pot and into the reservoir will be just fine.

I just bought a rescue orchid and repot in orchid mix but now thinking of doing leca. I no longer use leca but have a bit leftover from my leca journey and it’s perfect.
Oh wow! Now I feel brave enough to see if I can grow mine in leca.. but then again I still have not put my crystallinum into pon.. 😉😁💚

OBSESSEED!! I love all of your phals. I am currently growing about 6 of my summer blooming orchids in Pon and they are growing so well. Orchids are my very favorite, now I am trying to see if I can grow the Miltoniopsis orchids. Just purchased 2 which I am calling 7 and 8, because 1 to 6 are in orchid heaven!! You have done a great job transitioning yours!! I tried LECA but didn't like how sometimes I would lose the entire existing root system and had to wait for new ones to grow. Also, sometimes the top of the Leca would be so dry that the new root would dry up as soon as it touched the Leca. Now, enter Pon which is working like a charm.
Something very particular about phals is that they'll make a plant spike two leaves from the top of the plant. So if you grow 2 leaves, your phal should grow two spikes assuming there is space 2 leaves down on both sides of the stem. (I hope that makes sense lol)
This inspired me to move some phal rescues into leca! Thanks for the tips!

Beautiful! I have around 12 or 13 phals in leca, and I wouldn't want to grow them any other way. I have some that have struggled, but I've usually been able to bring them back.
Great selection of Phals. I also have most of my Phalaenopsis under growlight and they are doing great! I notice that my phals have smaller flowers than I initially got them as well and they can definitely die back from over blooming.
The flowering is controlled by temperature for most complex hybrids for sure, that's how groceries has them on flowers all years rounds, and if I am not careful with AC in the summer I might a spike or two. I think if you can overwinter them without triggering a bloom, and keep them in vegetative growth for a really long time it would be able to produce exceptional shower of flowers next time it blooms.

I have quite a few phals in leca but there are few species phal that don't like leca so I grew 5hem in moss. If I remember correctly you had some paphiopedalum in leca too, how are they doing?
Aw thanks! Also the paphs all died and I had them in pon. It was a combination of neglecting them and also me not knowing what I was doing. Actually I have one left but who knows if it’ll survive 😬

I just got two MASSIVE and old phals as a gift from a friend. I have phals already and know all there is to know about them…but these are so old and sentimental, I’m terrified to do anything to them, even though the need a repot. Pray for me, y’all 😅
