You know, Ryan, since all these walls are coming down, you can redesign your layout in any way you like. You don't have to stick with your original plan for rooms if you don't want to. Very freeing!

Within reason. I think those stone/rubble walls are structural and probably can't be moved much. And honestly, they do lend a certain air to the place.
Yes…. The world is Ryan’s oyster as far as the flat’s layout. It can be bad ass. I’d suggest when you walk in the front door you can look all the way up to the top… maybe a meter by two meter cut out … use wire for your railing and 8” plexiglass on floor.
If that spiral stairway could be made structually strong enough, it would be very impressive to restore if your considering an open concept plan ... :-)

At least he wasn't demolishing the wall when he was standing beneath it, this time. He should have really been wearing a hard hat when he was doing that. 😅 Head injuries suck!

Ryan, I enjoy watching as you begin to transform this little corner of the world into your dream home. However, as a nurse, a mother, and a seasoned remodeler, I do not enjoy watching you risk your eyes, ears, head, feet, and lungs as you demolish the interior of your home. As someone already mentioned, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is inexpensive and can save you from serious, life-threatening injuries and illness. Please protect yourself.
100% agree, Ryan. I know demo is the "fun part" but, as Ann says, it only needs one little piece of debris and it's off to emergency we go and "sorry, but you're going to lose an eye."

You should be wearing steel toed boots, safety glasses and A HELMET, please. PPE exists for a reason. A lot less expensive than a visit to the hospital.
Yes, please! Especially working on your own like this. Hard hat and safety glasses at a minimum if there's anything you're working on shoulder height or higher.

CZcamsrs are always bragging about how cheap medical bills are in France so I just figured that is why no one wears a hard hat, safety glasses and a mask. 😂 And, I never see anyone there dragging an oxygen tank behind so demolition without a mask doesn’t bother their lungs. 🫁 Written by a woman who baked for hours in the sun as a teen and 20-something and has lived to regret it.

The exposed staircase looks fantastic as well as exposed stone walls!
I would be VERY careful - in such an old structure, removing all or most of the joists at once - does risk movement in the walls. Mentioned it several episodes back. An old house partly relies on the joists as part of its lateral integrity, not just the foundations.

My 🗳 vote, too. Replace the structural bits progressively, just a few at a time. There was a lot of ballast in the former floors that stabilized the walls below them
Masonry wall codes in my region allow an aspect ratio of no more than 1:10 and no more than 10' vertical without support. Also, you appear to be a single structure with your neighbor: think of the damage to them if your outer walls start flexing. One shudders to imagine.
Please consider adding some new joists on each floor to tie the structure’s front & rear walls together, before too long.

I like the stairs open and being able to view down the stairs from the opening. It has an architectural look.

The stone wall looks lovely, but also looks like it could use quite a bit of new pointing. And I'm still concerned about those stairs just hanging there in mid-air now that the wall next to them is down!
Maybe, Nick Moon has some ideas about how to handle that. Maybe, that’s the entire purpose of those stairway walls - keeping the staircase in place.
69 year old who helped her dad with many repair/demo projects on old houses. I can smell the plaster, dust, dirt and damp mold half way around the world. (Nebraska)
Some videos I literally smell dirt, dust and sometimes sawdust when that's blowing around. Glad I don't smell the mold, lol.

This reno your doing is going to be a EPIC change when completed. There's so much you can do with planning of room layouts! Crack On!
Just a little bit of overall advice. First, get all, and I mean all of the demolition done, so that you reduce the amount of dust when you're building. Second, try to finish the rooms from the top floor down. That way you are not tracking construction dust and debris on the newly remodeled floors. This is not always a workable thing, because you might need to finish certain rooms first, due to circumstances. In this case, try and leave the staircase for last. You've got great people to lean on for advice, so keep up the good work. I look forward to every episode.
Ryan, not going to lie…. Every time I have renovated, the demo was my favourite part and I am much more aggressive than you are with my favourite sledgehammer! 😂 very useful for removing walls. With occasional weird attempt at a karate kick. I call it cheap therapy! I am extremely happy to hear that we may get more than one video per week, thank you!
For a beginner as far as demolishing, you're doing really well. Go at your own speed, don't feel like you have to rush.

A truly good NIOSH approved mask is a great investment, that takes out particulate *and has vapor filter options when you get to that part of your reno. 🎉🎉🎉

You know, personally, I really like the rustic, exposed stone walls. I was thrilled when you started taking the coating off. I guess you had to return your Dad's rockin' drill. No pun intended. I know what you mean. I’ve wondered how much of this construction is actually really, really old, like it maybe could be in the basement. Even if not, the appearance of age in the rest of the decor is very artistic and versatile. 🎉 ❤
@@user-vb6gl6nf7c I believe you're right, I feel that building has some age to it. I mean, if they were using dirt to insulate the floors, that would have to go back to quite a while ago. I really like the staircase, and since it's been exposed, it actually compliments the space so nicely!
It would be nice to see the stairway open to see through, like it is now without the wall. It’s a nice feature. Perhaps railing or plexiglass would work in this space…. Let the light shine through….😊
Speaking of neighbors, did y’all investigate the shared wall? I’m nervous about the state of it after seeing the condition of all the other walls. Not sure how it works in France if shared walls need fixing but with all the new structural improvement you’ll be making it might be worth checking that wall while you’re at it.
I’m enjoying watching the progress you’ve made and must say you have a much more relaxed reaction to the discoveries leading to more demolition than I could manage. In the end, you’ll have peace of mind knowing all floors and walls are solid and will last another 100 years. Crack on!

Ryan purchase a big trash bin 30 gallon size. (Sorry, I dont know the measurements in France) and some of those tip bags. You can fill up the bags and stack them until you can empty them. I know you are working within a budget, but keeping your area clean will end up less work at the end. Happy Easter to you and blessings to your project.

Pulling the wall down and exposing the curves of the staircase is beautiful! Have you thought of putting your own on suite another floor up so that you have privacy along with the attic and can leave that wall to the stairs open? I would consider doing the same on the living room floor, too. It sure opens up the feel of the house. Well done Ryan!

Just a thought: Ed (Bordeaux life) mentioned for his renovation, that he was not allowed to create more livingspace with the reconstruction. Please check before you make the design for the house and the roomplan if there is any restriction. It will cost you just a little effort and might safe you a lot of money and energy.

Good that you met your neighbours. Regarding the cleanup. See if you can get a section of that tube Billy used at the Convent to load his lorry with debris. It would be a lot quicker and easier to load your trailer that way instead of bagging it or using a bucket. Regarding your videos; your viewers will watch them regardless of the number per week. I know others have mentioned it but .... please wear a helmet and eye protection. You are in a construction zone even while doing demolishing chores. Be safe! Don't want to see someone else doing your work cause you've been laid up with major injuries. Be safe!
Just imagine… having an electronic smart tint glass to replace that wall… you want to let the light in, you put it on transparent… you want privacy, it becomes opaque…. that would be awesome! Whatever you do will be amazing. ❤

Smart to tear the wall down, so when you take rumple to tip, it can go. Make the mess now. Maybe a waterfall glass or stained glass wall for that wall. Keep room from getting chilled when door opens & privacy for when someone is going upstairs(lady in a dress) make the section by stairs stationary & the rest maybe a slider or folding doors.

Like others, I would urge you to borrow some safety equipment from Billy. The house is definitely more dangerous now, especially with all that rubble everywhere. You are right to worry about it falling on your head. I would just shovel some of it away from the edges and off the staircase, even if you can't bag it up yet. None of us wants to see you injured Ryan. Another video per week would be lovely, but only if you can manage it. Keep going, it won't be long before you can start the renovation, rather than the demolition phase. 😄
That rock wall is actually a nice addition to your plans. Get it fixed up and regrouted/poointed and use it as an accent feature. Some granite is beautiful when cleaned up and it is by the fireplace too. So many opportunities available to you. The weather here has been a bit off as well, wet snow in piles then dry up only to do it again next weekend. You have a great day
Rooms need insulation and somewhere to hide the wiring etc. stone walls would be very cold in the winter.

I think you might be breathing in all that dust Ryan. The trouble is at your age you think you are invincible but in a few years time you may live to regret it. Quite a lot of people including me are worried about lack of mask and hard hat too! Never mind Dan the Gardener also rarely wears a mask or a hard hat. Not setting a very good example😂

You might please pace yourself. It sounded like you may be planning to clear the demolition debris in one day? Instead I suggest that you stuff some large trash bags and pile them up by the front door as you go. Maybe a trash haul could occur once a week or so for a while to lighten the pressure. Meanwhile, your safety and comfort would not have to be put off.

Rig up a stand-alone hammock, and you can move right in! You know, without all the floors, it's like being in one of those ancient 'keeps.'

To do a cost assessment on the walls plaster straight on the stone or use studs and plaster board to make flat straight walls plus allow air to to the stone to breath.
Is there a place in attic to put a small effective exhaust fan? To draw out moisture.

I think you should just reinforce the side of the staircase and leave it open to the room beside it. It really creates a nice open feeling and you can appreciate the curvature of the staircase.
Yes. Since it’s only you Ryan, make it open concept so you can treat it all as your personal, say New York loft.

Enjoying the progress! Just hope none of those flying chips of brick and plaster don’t end up piercing your eye! My cousin turned on his kitchen water faucet and a small bead of glass bounced into his eye. It was in the water! We don’t usually have to use eye protection when doing the dishes, but he ended up in the local urgent clinic to have the glass removed.

Something to think about, instead of placing the floor joists into those pockets you might want to have them run and sit into C steel beams. The beams will add greater support and won’t rot the beams again.

Still think uou should have kitchen and living area upstairs Bedrooms do not need views or a lot of light .Your bedroom could be the next floor spares and a utility on ground.And keep stairwell open so much airy and not so claustrophobic. Ryan - you should borrow the debris shutes that Billy used to clear the debris at the Convent . . . . . Shovel it out the window into a truck or trailer to haul it to the tip. Good luck with the cleanup - ALWAYS easier to work in a clean environment.
