      I think in the case of the “Anthony” episode, I think it’s more on a combination of Anthony’s Dad’s aggressive and bias behavior towards Ren and Stimpy, John K's now notable incurable ego, and Richard Pursel’s involvement in writing the story; as he would later be involved with the Adult Party Cartoon in 2003, and Spongebob in 2005.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 3 lety +42

      While the initial line up of Ren and Stimpy, Doug, and Rugrats helped put the network on the map, shifting from a reruns and shows from Canada format, ever since the early 00's, they put a greater emphasis on their live action output. Essentially, Schneider was Nickelodeon's Teacher's Pet, and it was a falling out over Game Shakers (supposedly, I don't have the exact details) that caused them to split. Nick has given more allowance to their live action series, Dan's especially, than to any of their animated shows. I hear they treat most of the animators and or cartoons poorly, and if they speak out about it, they basically never work in the industry again.

    I’m a bit torn about the idea of kids being more durable then we give them credit for.
    On the one hand; Yes! I am a firm believer that we shouldn’t treat kids like idiots and give them the benefit of the doubt that they can handle stories with more mature or “”political”” themes.
    On the other hand; when it comes to what kids may find disturbing or scary... well, it depends on the kid.
    For example, when I was about 7 or so, I watched The Dark Crystal. And I loved it! Yeah, there were a few scenes that I found creepy, like the mystic alchemist’s death or the parts where the chamberlain tries to manipulate Jen and Kira, but I mostly just liked it for its atmosphere, the imaginative world and creatures, the music etc. Meanwhile, my sister, who was roughly the same age as me (but older by a few minutes) was terrified of the movie and never watched the whole thing until just recently.
    My point is, what one seven-year-old might find beautiful, exciting or entertaining, another kid the same age might be terrified by and find too much to handle.
    So yeah, we should respect kids and not treat them like idiots, that’s for sure. But at the same time, I feel like when it comes to stuff like what some kids find disturbing or upsetting, it’s should be sort of a case by case basis.

      On the way to primary school with Mum, there were two little 7-8 year old girls just ahead, possessing the power of innocent cuteness to the max. They were gleefully talking about what sounded like a video nasty where the big bad ripped out some guy's bloody heart from his chest with it sill beating before it burst into flames! Mum was shocked!
      Turns out that was actually a scene from 'Temple of Doom', which Mum innocently took me to a short while later, thinking it was just a PG movie. Only it was an EIGHTIES PG movie, one of the most infamous ones in fact that led to PG-12/13 becoming a thing. I was fine with it at the time, Mum was... not.
      Yet, just a just a year later, during the school holidays prior to secondary school, I was scared by a black panther jump scare in a Garfield cartoon. Took years for me to process the resultant nightmares before I finally accepted the black panther in my dreams.

    My personal theory of why the Anthony episode was banned was because since Anthony’s dad was based off John’s own dad, and John’s dad ended up personally chewing him out for embarrassing him and “making him look soft” in the episode once he saw it (Source: the Father’s Day page on John’s blog), John may have felt bad for that and told Nickelodeon to take it down so his dad wouldn’t have to see it and be embarrassed by it again.

    There's nothing wrong with the word "midget" any more than there is with the word "dwarf", and if anything the former is superior because it doesn't cause any confusion as to whether you're discussing folkloric spirits that resemble humans or humans that happen to be significantly shorter than normal. People just arbitrarily decided "midget" was offensive about a decade or two ago and began boldly asserting it until they could force the culture at large to pretend that it was and stop using it, and now "dwarf" is being claimed as likewise offensive because euphemism treadmills are always that way.

    i think one of the most disturbing and mean spirited eps is the one where Ren loses all of his teeth, like he couldn't get a break that entire time. first, he's annoyed by stimpy brushing his teeth and then ren is like i don't need to do that and then he looks in the mirror and his mouth is so disgusting the mirror breaks and then the next day he's having second thoughts like maybe he should do it and actually brush his teeth and he looks again and then his own teeth shatter and he feels all shamed and humiliated and hopeless, because now it's too late, you only get 1 set of adult teeth and now they are gone and overnight all his teeth are gone and then he only has stinky gumholes and nerve endings and then there are flies eating crap. . literally in Stimpy's catbox, eating cat turds and the smell of ren's mouth is so offensive that the flies almost get sick from it and they yell at Ren and then ren has to pluck out all the nerve endings and that must have been excruciating so he can put them under his pillow for the fairy to give him money but then the fairy is just a dirty old man and he's also a scumbag and is all like "oh i have no more money. . whatever, i'll take them anyway and just leave some lint. . it's good enough for him" and then ren is left with nothing and it's so mean spirited.

    There was an episode that was banned from reruns a few years after it aired; the one where Ren and Stimpy are taught about the evolution of life and the dinosaurs by a museum curator.
    Both Ren and Stimpy would also portray various prehistoric animals. From single celled organisms, fish, dinosaurs, to prehistoric mammals.
    Also a short lived meme came from this episode
    Why was this episode banned, you may ask? Was it about them explaining evolution (even if they're not being serious)? No
    It was a something that the Curator said while describing the various (and obviously inaccurate) ways the dinosaurs went extinct; while it seems he said "Peruvian Mud Flood". Some parents heard that as "Peruvian Buttplug". So some complaints were made and the rest was history. You can see it on complete series dvds, but I don't see coming back to TV anytime soon.

    Funny enough, “the last temptation” and “Sammy and me” got very similar treatments like man’s best friend, only unlike man’s best friend, they did eventually air on Nickelodeon, I’ll be it, 20 years later. Sven Hoëk and Ren Needs Help both just aired, and both in their entireties. I recorded them on my DVR about 2 days ago.
    As for Bell Hops, I don't think it was banned on its own, but it originally aired as part of an actual banned segment/story (I don't remember which one), and they never bothered to separate the two stories/segments. A similar thing happened with a Fairly Odd Parents story/segment that was banned because they were making fun of the British and their teeth. There was another separate story/segment of that episode as well, and it's just considered "lost", because it was never actually "banned", but also never separated from the banned story/segment either.

    This was a really interesting watch. I actually agree with most of your verdicts. The only one I kinda disagree with on is ‘Ren’s Retirement.’ I think the episode is more case sensitive, especially with all the disturbing imagery. I think some people could handle it well and others could not. If I had to guess as to why ‘Bell Hops’ was banned, I would guess it’s because of the excessive use of severed heads, especially towards the end.
    After looking banned episodes, I found a list of episodes that were either censored or banned. In it, I found a few other banned episodes that you didn’t mention. ‘Big Baby Scam’ was eventually pulled from airing for, from what I can tell, unknown reasons. The bath scene I can kinda understand being removed, as well as maybe the shot of Mr. Pipe being naked, but I don’t understand removing the entire episode. ‘Stimpy’s Fan Club’ was banned in some places for the extended scene of Ren planning to kill Stimpy. I’m not really sure if I think this is justified or not, but I’m leaning on the side of it not being justified. I also think it’s hypocritical to ban this episode, but not ‘Out West’ for the excessive mention of hanging. ‘Hermit Ren’ was banned for having dark subject material. I think this is unjustified because the episode displays everything in over-the-top and cartoony ways. ‘Prehistoric Stimpy’ was banned for having many inappropriate jokes and the use of the word “buttplug.” From what I remember, the episode wasn’t actually that bad. I think they could’ve just removed the mentioning of a buttplug and the episode would’ve been fine. ‘It’s A Dog’s Life’ was banned also for having dark subject material. I think this one is justified because the episode goes way overboard with the material it presents and doesn’t try that much to be funny about it.
    This was a really interesting subject to watch and discuss. I think this just further shows how much of an impact ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show’ has had on media and how we view it.

    • @LucasFrasure
      @LucasFrasure Před 3 lety +1

      Tbh, if no one knows exactly why ‘A Visit to Anthony’ was banned, then I’d say it falls in the ‘Bell Hops’ category of being unjustified because of no reason being given by Nick. I don’t know if this is true, but I think the twin towers being destroyed in ‘Powdered Toast Man vs. Waffle Woman was shown in its own dedicated shot, so the episode could easily be edited to still show the city being destroyed. If that’s not true, I think simply showing the aftermath of their fight would be enough to get the point across. I’m not exactly sure how ‘Dog Tags’ could be edited to not show Ren attempting suicide while still keeping the story intact. Maybe it could just cut to Stimpy’s reaction and only briefly show Ren? IDK.

One can also include efforts contained within Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, as well as Walter Lantz's cartoons. Don't buy the rights to show these works of art if you're going to chop them up, censor, ruin or even ban them! Show them in their entirety or don't buy them! By this ridiculously flawed corporate logic, Disney's brilliant Fantasia should never see the light of day, not only for the demonic Night on Bald Mountain scene, but also for making fun of both ballet and fat characters with Hyacinth Hippos' Dance of the Hours and for witchcraft and sorcery in The Sorcerer's Apprentice!
