Oddly, the Mad Scientist trope is fairly young and past it's 38th birthday few months ago. So, while Stimpy could be classed as another genius amoral nut, he's fairly out of the supposed spectrum? But with all conceptual things, I really don't want to cut deeper into it. Creation is exhausting!
My best friend and I sang "Happy Happy Joy Joy" religiously ...she unfortunately passed away ....but us singing that at the top of our lungs until we fell out laughing is still one of my fondest memories ❤
The fact that my dad still loves this show and he’s now 53 says a lot about who their target audience was in the 90’s. He still sings the happy happy joy joy song.

@@DuskTillShawn You wanna talk about anything from the Bob Camp/Games Animation Era of Ren and Stimpy? Because when John K. took too long to provide a lot of Ren and Stimpy shorts (including the fact that, despite "Man's Best Friend" having George Liquor literally wanting to be attacked by either Ren or Stimpy as part of a Disciplinary Course, and Ren proceeds to attack George Liquor), John K. was fired and Bob Camp took over. Bob Camp is actually not a bad candidate, considering he was actually part of the Team since the Pilot episode "Big House Blues", the same reason Billy West remained voicing Stimpy during the Games Animation lineup of R+S shorts. Regardless, it would be interesting to see your thoughts on how Bob Camp handles Ren & Stimpy, when taking into account what we found out about John K, and the way he treated Ren & Stimpy during Adult Party Cartoon.
I recommend you start with "Stimpy's Cartoon Show", which does a self-referential commentary on how John K treats his employees; just imagine John K. is Ren and Bob Camp is Stimpy, and you'll get the joke.
Perhaps the best thing about Ren and Stimpy was the voices. How many of you, like myself growing up would always mimic lines from the show?
“You filthy swine! I will keeeell you!”

Yay! This one I agree is one of the most iconic episodes of the show. Even the Happy Happy Joy Joy song was used in a Lays commercial many years later too. Bob Camp and others did some awesome work on the boards too for this one.

Gotta love how Stimpy subjected Ren to psychological torture in an attempt to make him happy.
Also, I think that it's a mix between this, the Ren hermit cave episode, and the electric fence board game episode are the best.
This episode for the song, the hermit cave for the scene of Ren going crazy, and the electric fence for the very boundary pushing scene where Ren describes how he's essentially gonna torture Stimpy and his cousin? (don't actually remember whether it's his cousin or not).
Don’t make Ren angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
The thing that gets me is that it doesn't make Ren happy, it takes control of his body and makes it ACT happy. It's like a form of locked-in syndrome, Ren is concious but has no control of his body, forced to watch from within as it does what it wants no matter what he wants. Truely horrific.
This is also my favorite R&S episode. The exaggerated expressions, and even a couple moments with an "old" looking quality to them make this one. I especially like the "GO" in Ren's mouth as he says it. R&S in general was a favorite of mine because of the Bob Clampettness of it (the man was actually worshipped at Spumco, even to a fault).

The music in Stimpy's Invention is *BY FAR* the best thing about it. The song at 7:49 is called Shopping Spree.

Thanks for posting this, this is my all time favorite episode of Ren and Stimpy alongside Sven Hoek and Stimpy's fan club, both of which are my favorite episodes of the show. They are the reason why Ren and Stimpy is my favorite cartoon of all time thanks to the crazy art style and also how it influenced animation.

@@AceFuzzLord Joe Murray created both shows, Rocko is on Nickelodeon, while Lazlo is on Cartoon Network.
Ren and Stimpy is a prime example of how you can, most definitely separate the (scuzzbag) artist from the art. I hate J.K., but Ren Hoek, especially, is one of my all-time favourite cartoon characters.
Dude the Happy Happy Joy Joy song is like SEARED into my brain. When I was growing up my mom was OBSESSED with this show (it first aired 3 years before I was born) and she taped a bunch of episodes on VHS and played this one specifically OVER AND OVER AGAIN while I was growing up. She LOVED the damn song. I could resite that mf by heart even though I hadn't heard it in YEARS.

I really hope that the people at the outsourced studio got to be in a better place and not have to suffer like that anymore. I wholly agree with them vandalizing the show, nobody should have to live like that.
Yeah, that studio went out of business from what I found online.
Hoping that the people who worked there were able to find employment somewhere that they’ll actually be treated well. Nobody deserves to live like that and work under those conditions.

I had this episode on VHS as a child
Not to be "that guy", but my favorite episode was Man's Best Friend. I'm not being sarcastic. I enjoyed seeing George Liquor get what was coming to him. I've seen him in John K's later works, and his obnoxious personality only got more annoying to me. Seeing him on the receiving end of slapstick violence is very cathartic.
So much not-so-unfortunate implications within this one. I love how this episode did deconstruction of "everybody should be happy" trope by the friendly guy literally brainwashing grumpy guy by force. I also love hiw it's clear that despite his noble intentions, Stimpy is obviously wrong. And that's nit common in cartoons for kids.
I heard they had to change one of the scenes where Stimpy is using animals to build his machine apparently, the higher up had a problem with that so they had to change it to him using tools instead

I love this episode, but I think the jingle for the “Don’t Pee on the Electric Fence” board game gets stuck in my head much more often than Happy Happy Joy Joy.

Just discovered your channel! I love the rugrats videos ^^ i listen to them when doing art. Watching your videos is such a nostalgic feeling. A lot of these old cartoons inspired my art i do today and hearing analysis' on shows i watched growing up when i draw def gives me more ways to view new perspectives ^^
I consider Little Rock of Horrors to be the 2000s version of Stimpy's Invention, as much as I consider What Was Missing to be the 2010s version of Band Geeks.

I never really watched the show, but I know of Happy Happy Joy Joy. The other Ren and Stimpy things that comes to mind are Powdered Toast Man and Ren' Ice Cream Bar.
this is the best episode of Ren and Stimpy and also the best drawn and animated carton of all time
It's a shame that they fired John K despite of him being a huge asshole. It would have been great if they would have made shorter seasons with better animation like the ones in this episode and would let him make Ren and Stimpy and until this day.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this episode talked about with the subjects of stimming. Stimpy trying to "correct" Ren by forcing him to act the way he wants, while actually just torturing him for no reason, seems pretty similar. I could also see it as a take down of toxic positivity.

To give you a better idea of why Stimpy's Invention is iconic, I'll direct your attention to Nickelodeon All Star Brawl. Ten and Stimpy are playable characters, and if you lead them to victory, they'll both celebrate with a reference to Happy Happy Joy Joy. It's that type of attention to detail that puts all the pieces together.
I have to wonder if this episode is a little bit of a take that to cartoons like the Care Bears where they more or less force kids and antagonists to be happy with the Care Bear Stare…

It's probably for the best for Nickelodeon to distance themselves from John Kricfalusi. Here's hoping the upcoming Ren and Stimpy reboot that was announced in 2020 is good. Yeah, a reboot WITHOUT Kricfalusi's involvement is in the works. I just hope it doesn't suffer a similar fate as Powerpuff Girls (2016). Because we all know what happened without original creator, Craig McCracken, on the project.

Ok. Yeah admittedly I’m sure NO ONE has not seen or heard of this episode in some way or another.
I recall that song all too well despite not actively watching this show when I was little and even later in life.
This episode is definitely in memory aside from like three others- and credit where due.
Stimpy was indeed evil in this. In the manner of so good his intentions come off negative and Ren can likely be a strange occasional mirror to that in so negative equals good.
But idk. It’s there and it did its thing.

All the rule-breaking and terrible practices that comes with it.
Really. They weren't just callous about bad studio practices, they knew of it, they had portions vandalized they had to fix, they had a guy specific to the cartoon sent over.

wow... i had no idea phil studios employees were treated that bad... every focuses of john's problematic behavior, i never even thought about problems with the studios, let alone all the shit in the writers room... sad so many of precious memorys of mine keep getting tarnished.. from danny masterson to all the problems with nickolodeon, to how much of a disgusting monster vince mcmahon turned out to be... it's starting to get me down how common this is becoming for me..

I think this is the only episode I willingly watch of Ren and Stimpy as a kid. As I...despite liking Rocko's Modern life and Ahh Real Monsters. I just for some reason could not get into as a kid at the time? And...guess I just did not like gross humor at times, despite Rocko's modern life has that throughout its episodes. But- not as extreme as Ren and Stimpy's.
