Best Affordable Gaming Laptop in 2022 (under $1000) - Asus TUF Dash F15 (FX517Z)

  • This is currently one of the best gaming laptops for under $1000 (on sale). You get the latest Intel 12th gen CPU with 10 cores, Nvidia 3060 gpu with MUX switch, and futureproofed input/output with Thunderbolt 4 (40gb/s).
At 4.41 lbs, it's super light for a gaming laptop, but it also means there's less space for the cooling system; when pushed hard, the air gets really hot. Some annoyances: The I/O ports are also too close together & the hinge doesn't open more.
Otherwise, I think it's designed well. Asus has done a great job balancing performance vs weight at a great price.
Here's how to upgrade the SSD & RAM: • Upgrading Asus Tuf Das...
    Major specs:
    CPU: Intel i7-12650H (10 cores -6 big, 4 little)
GPU: Nvidia 3060 RTX 6GB @105W with MUX switch (now 3070 for same price)
    RAM: 16GB DDR5 4800MHz (2 slots total)
Storage: 512GB m.2 PCIe NVMe (2 slots total)
    Display: 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS (144Hz, 62.5% sRGB)
    Ports:
    - 1x USB-C Thunderbolt 4 (40gb/s)
    - 1x USB-C w/Display & Power Delivery (10gb/s)
    - 2x USB-A (5gb/s)
    - 1x HDMI
    - 3.5 headphone/mic jack
    Network:
    - Ethernet
    - WiFi 6 (802.11ax)
    - Bluetooth 5.2

@@LudwickMa Thanks, I appreciate it. I placed something under the laptop too give it more space for air. It expels a lot of heat, so the cooling system is doing it's job, though I wonder if the thermal paste they use is any good.
By default, Thunderbolt 4 has power delivery. Here's more info by its inventor if you're interested: www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-4-vs-usb-c.html
Edit: just a thought; usb-c/tbolt charges only up to 100w (fine for typical stuff like word processing) but you need the power brick (200W) for power thirsty apps like AAA games and script-heavy web apps/sites.

Thanks. One note: When system is configured to automaticaly detect GPU based on launched application, MUX switch is disabled. IIRC it cannot be dynamiccaly disabled or enabled at runtime. So either you have MUX switch disabled and software can choose between dGPU and iGPU (but you will have lower performance) or you have MUX switch enabled and only dGPU can be used (you will have better performance but you won't be able to use iGPU for power saving etc).

Gpu graphics data is sent to the cpu before going to the monitor. A mux switch let's you route this info directly to the monitor and skips the trip to the cpu for better performance. Could be useful for competitive gaming and demanding AAA games.

Second thing is to manually select the nvidia card for the app in windows. If you open the nvidia control panel (bottom right corner of windows task bar) and click "Manage 3D settings" on left, you'll see a text link that says "Windows graphics settings". Click that and set your games manually to run off the nvidia card when the window options pop up. Maybe this might help you.

    Hi there,
    Great review! In-depth.
Picked mine up on Black Friday with the TUF monitor. But I found the thunderbolt 4 (labelled) port doesn’t recognise Gsync OR display settings when trying to configure the display in the nvidia control panel or windows settings.
Only the USB C 3.2 gen2 supports display settings, with displayport and 165hz (my monitor) refresh rate. And noticed by the nvidia control panel.

A cable directly connected from laptop to USB-C or HDMI should work without issue. Are you using a docking station by any chance?
Gaming gear (like keyboards) and proprietary tech like G-Sync can be hit or miss when docks, hubs or KVM switches are involved.
If you're using a dock and G-Sync/Nvidia panel both work with the USB-C port (non Thunderbolt), it could be super helpful to those of us who need this kind of setup. Thanks!

G-Sync no longer works over Thunderbolt 4 due to a manufacturing change (as of 12th gen Intel CPUs).
The best explanation I've found for the layman (if you're technically inclined) is here:

The game is called BPM (Bullets Per Minute). You have to time your shots to the music, so if you want to work on your rhythm, it's a fun game.

All Windows laptops come with a limited version of office (I think you can use it for a month? Then have to pay monthly subscription or something.) There are several excellent free office softwares you can download - search Google for "free Microsoft office alternative".

This laptop is the worse laptop i have ever owned, same goes to the 2021 version which i also owned. My specs: 165hz 1440p, rx 3050, i7 650. Why couldnt have they gave me a i7 12700? also why a 1440p display on a 3050, 3050 doesnt even have enough vram for it. I have the ddr5 version and some of my games use shared vram as vram because it runs out of vram. no rgb too. I will be buying another laptop when i get enough money since when i bought this, i couldbnt return it.

I upgraded from tuf 15 21 with rtx 3050 to this laptop. The performance improvement is very high. 3050 really suck as the vram limits the performance of a powerful cpu. This on the other hand with 8gb vram can run most games on high and above for atleast two to three more years.

    • @SubscribeToMeForCookie
      @SubscribeToMeForCookie Před rokem

@@S-K-S- I’m guessing you have a 1440p display, it can’t run at high settings. I sold the laptop for a desktop which I built, it has a 3070 ti 8gb, and I have a 1440p display, it’s similar to yours in vram except for performance. For 1440p 8gb vram is the limit on high / extreme textures, my rtx 3070 ti is hitting the limit and I don’t think it will last a few years with this much vram. I think it’s nvidia that sucks, low vram, there is no game that takes up more than 12gb on 4k ultra settings and that is the limit of the rtx 4070 ti, so it’s still a bad deal unless you play in lower textures for years. And the asus tuf dash rtx 3070s are literally trash (not to offend you) they are low wattage gpus, I think 85w. Your getting extremely limited in performance with that low watts for a 3070, a 3050 is higher watts than that it can go up to 95w. I bet your laptop is also hot af, if my 65w 3050 used to get hot, I don’t know how hot your 85w one will the stickers literally mention the cooling being good but that’s cap. Now getting off of performance, the laptop is overall bad quality. So weak bro, feel like it would break any second. Trackpad literally clicks on it own when getting bent little bit

@@S-K-S- I realized I didn’t write anything about the quality lol, the temps are so high, trash plastic, the laptop has no Rgb whyy, the laptops trackpad had no palm rejection and I bet you notice it really annoying since it’s big and close to the edge.

      @SubscribeToMeForCookie Před rokem

@@S-K-S- ok I retrieved some of my other comments about that laptop: it only had 2 usb ports, no cool keyboard function keys like camera switch, fan max boost, a crosshair in the middle of the screen to cheat in games. (I have owned many other laptops like the legion 5 pro, msi ge76 raider which I got for around the same price 1000-1300 dollars with the dash f15) they all had useful features like that. Now I found out the laptop is made like this for battery life, the battery life is trash bro. It lasts like a movie or almost 2 movies. If they were trying to make a laptop with good battery life, they should have went with amd stuff, amd CPUs are much more power efficient than intel mobile CPUs and same with their gpus. I don’t know why they are so dumb

I Bought the the Tuf dash i712650H ,16GB RAM,3050Ti ,512GB SSD variant from Asus offline store in 96K(which also included a asus tuf bag of worth Rs 1500),And using it since last 5 month.
    #GEEKBENCH SCORE - #SINGLE CORE - 1770
    #MULTICORE SCORE- 10330
Cons-They could have given RBG keyboard in all tuf dash variant as its in normal tuf series, I didnt knew it doesnt have RGB while i was buying
    - I think it heats quiet a bit more or maybe it feels more hotter than actually it is.
    - They should have given 1 tb SSd instead of 512 as its not enough for keeping 3-4 games at a time.If not that ,then atleast gen4 sdd.
    - Only 2 usb 3.2 ports ,I was expecting 3 usb 3.2 ports.
    - Atleast they could have given 95 watt TGP 3050Ti or 3050 as in acer nitro 5 ( In 85K Rps),
    -THERMALS- #CPU- 75-80 C while gaming(25 watt-40 watt) if power crosses 40 watt(during loading games) temp go upto max 95 C
#GPU-80-86 C [initially it will immediately reach to 80 C and reaches max 85-86 C in heavy games]
Pros- LIfetime MS office, 1yr Maceffe
premium built and Keyboard, Compact and not that hefty
MUX switch is there ,DDR5 RAM
Good for casual gamers and college students.
i7 12th gen Cpu are better ahead of ryzen7 6000 series(present in rog series)
    Perfomance is beast (VALORANT 300fps-350fps)
(GTA 5 - 100-160 fps) Very high setting
(FORZA 5- 100-130fps) High preset and Raytracing high
(PUBG PC- 100 -144fps) both low and high settings.
RBG KEYBOARD and 1 more usb port and could have been given.
