- Nato states have said Ukraine can join the military alliance "when allies agree and conditions are met" after President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the "absurd" delay to accession.
In a communique, Nato said it recognised the need to move faster but would not be drawn on a timeframe.
Earlier Mr Zelensky said there seemed to be "no readiness" to invite Ukraine to Nato or make it a member.
He is now in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, where the summit is happening.
Kyiv accepts it cannot join Nato while it is at war with Russia but wants to join as soon as possible after fighting ends.

The naivety to think it can end in a ceasefire when you shut down all possibilities to de-escalate. If Ukraine is guaranteed to join NATO after the war, there is no reason for either side to de-escalate. It only encourages both sides to fight harder and longer.

It was Russia which shut down all possibility to de-escalate. You are just parroting the Russian narrative of the conflict.

The reason he is asking for a specified time, is because he will make sure the conflict does not end until that time, hoping Russia will withdraw, or gets into a direct conflict with NATO. Either is fine for Ukraine, how ever it is absolutely not fine for NATO members, this will not be accepted.
I think it's the opposite. Hes worried that Putin will drag out the war forever to prevent Ukraine from ever joining NATO. Zelensky already can drag out the war as long as he wants. Europe is stuck with him. Europe would look like morons to abandon ukraine. They never will

For now they are getting the full support of the Western Allies. Until the war is ended, membership should not be given to Ukraine. Joining whilst the threat is still very much present would be absolute madness. It will draw Putin's attention towards other NATO countries and the threat of escalation will be very real

Even if Ukraine weren't currently at war, the territorial integrity of the country has been fragmented by the eastern republics who formally seceded from Ukraine with Russian backing. Whatever anyone thinks of their 'legitimacy', NATO cannot admit a country that does not have control over the entirety of its territory. Besides, they are currently being pummeled by the vastly superior Russian military at the moment, admitting them right this second would mean direct US involvement, and hence, WWIII. This is not a game. The US needs to stop meddling in the affairs of other countries already. Ukraine is to Russia what Mexico is to us, it's their geopolitical backyard
