- BMW 535i F10 aFe Magnum Force Stage 2 Install & Review. Best Intake?
We upgraded from the BMS Intake to the aFe Stage 2 Magnum Force Stage 2 Intake. In this video, we did a full install and test run using both BimmerLink and Dragy GPS Performance Meter. According to aFe's dyno results, they claim +30 HP and +60 Torque gains. We can not confirm this until we take it to the dyno ourselves. Although we did notice an improvement in boost pressure and air intake temperature, the improvement was not very significant to feel behind the wheel.
At the top of dragy performance results you will see the DA numbers. This number can impact your timing significantly so figured I would detail this a little more. DA (Density altitude), is basically a means for describing how the weather conditions are going to effect our engines performance.
Look at it this way, if you enclose a 1 foot glass cube at sea level, in that cubic foot volume of air there is going to be so much oxygen. If you do the same thing on the top of Mount Everest there will be less oxygen in the air. Why? Air has 21% oxygen. The air on Mount Everest is much less dense, so there is less molecules of oxygen in that cubic foot volume of air. What effects density altitude?
Barometric pressure: Think of the atmosphere as a land mass; some places it is high, some places it is low. If you take your glass square and stretch it to the top of the atmosphere, if the atmosphere is significantly higher, there are more gas molecules pressing down, so the pressure is higher and the density is higher. If you go up in altitude, the column of air above you is decreased in height, so your actual barometric pressure measured right where you are at is less.
Temperature: As temp goes up the molecules get more active, and the gases expand, so less oxygen molecules. Lower the temp the better.
Humidity: Water is a contaminant for drag testing and displaces potential air molecules.
The lower the DA the better!

We did a side by side comparison video as well. I think the stock unit with a drop in K&N filter works just as well

No ecu reset for the intake change or some time for the ecu to get used to the change in air if there is one?
No reset. I drove around for about 10 min and did a few 0-60 launches before testing it with BimmerLink and dragy just Incase
I wonder if you compare it with just K&N replacment filter. As its a lot cheaper and its also free flow filter.
Yeah but the thing is the tube from the factory usually plastic. And aftermarket most likely is not flimsy plastic.

Not sure what you were reading when you said 30 psi boot pressure, and I may be wrong here but our turbo isn’t capable to achieving that safely. And if that actually wasn’t a misreading then I’d say something seriously wrong is happening. I think you had gotten a new tune when you dyno tested?

Boost psi was pretty consistent in the three runs we did on each setup. Stock vs BMS vs AFE. Boost psi was close between the stock and AFE with BMS being much lower. I do have a vent to atmosphere BOV and wonder if this has anything to do with it. Yes they did custom tune it when we took to the dyno.
Our next video will be the comparison numbers on each set up. Getting down pipe and intercooler shortly then going bootmod stage 2
ThicGarage I think you’ll like bootmod3. I put down 394 whp after going stage 2 with meth. Hoping to break 420 whp with the custom tune, then it’s out with the old and in with the new turbo setup.

I don't see how it's expected to make power of torque when the car is running the standard map,simple science tell me if your drawing in more air,your going to need more fuel,spark timing and boost,for the whole package to work accurately,as for quoted power and talk figures,I would seriously take that with a pinch of salt,but all said and done,the afe looks great and fits together well,and I certainly would use their product,but it would have to be combined with a stage 1or stage to map,great video though guy's.
Correct! We also did get a custom tune and then went stage 2 after the downpipe and intercooler install. The Ait box looks great but my opinion is that the factory unit with a k&n drop in filter will give the same if not better results
