    I saved take out containers over the year for bottom watering trays and Santa brought me heat mats plus grow lights. I’m mixing my own seed starting mix in a bin because last year I bought really bad seed starting mix. Just remember to bake your soil 400 F for 20 minutes and cool to avoid bugs. I’m also hanging yellow sticky bug traps by my starts to catch little flies.

      Santa did good! And, good idea on the take-out containers. The possibilities are endless!

    I enjoyed all your input, thanks! I did an experiment with earthworm castings in my seedlings and am happy with that. What a gorgeous plant start housing outfit. Maybe a video on that? I guess I am getting off-topic. Have a great day!

      Hey Rachel! I did a video on the window greenhouse a while back. I probably need to update it and do another...

    40w 4ft led 6000k "shop lights" from Amazon are perfect! My local big box store doesnt carry led shop lights. I use 2 or 3 per shelf. On the shelves I use 2 I have to have them close or they get leggy, on the shelves I have 3, they don't need to be moved up & down, they can be about 12-16" away without getting leggy. Something you also want to consider is your electric bill- if you're saving money on shop lights from your local department store that use t5 or t8s, you may he spending a LOT MORE each month, every year on your electric bill, (& those bulbs have to be replaced) whereas you could have paid a little more for led's & you'll save on your electric bill!

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      Good info! I’ve always understood that, with LED, you have to be careful with the “color” of light that it’s emitting. That’s why I’ve always steered clear of them.

    • @ElderandOakFarm
      @ElderandOakFarm Před 2 lety

      @@BerkeleyFarms me too at first! Gary @ the rusted Homestead has great videos explaining it but as long as you have 4500k-6500k you're golden! (Thats going to be that bright white light in the correct color, which I'm pretty sure is a mix of all colors but the highest in red & blue, which is what seedlings need the most of... its been a while since i did the research so dont quote me on that but i know for sure the 4500k-6500k is correct! Ive heard that 6000k os best so thats what I use) & MOST lights are 4500k+ but some are still made under 4500k which is that yellowish warm toned light...

    Loved all that info. I have used aluminum serving trays from Dollar Tree to bottom water. I did however buy some fish emulsion last year from the advice from one of your videos last year. Haven’t used it yet though lol. I plan to bottom water this year so how much of the fish emulsion would I add to my 1 gallon watering can? Again great info. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌱🌱💕👩🏻‍🌾

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      Love the serving tray idea. I would follow the directions on the bottle. They usually don't need much.

  • @jenniferchristiansen2040

    This is fantastic! My plans this year is to try to get as much garden to table planting as possible. There's only three of us eating. How do you plan ahead to stop pests?

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      That’s a great goal! As for pests, one of my biggest goals this year is to focus on soil health. That’s the 1st line of defense against pest. Healthy soil=healthy plants=stronger disease and pest resistance

    Got my soil blocker back and so excited to get ready to start seeds, what do you think about using old cookie sheets to put your soil blocks on, not sure how the metal will hold up with all the watering, but trying to think of eco friendly ways to do things!

      Thank you! I'll do a seed starting timeline video soon :)

  • @takeitslowhomestead5218

    Thanks for the informative video. I’ve heard that if we’re planning on up-potting our seedlings, we should switch to the regular potting soil because it has nutrients, such as compost, in it. Our last average frost here in the high deserts of Utah is May 20, so I still have awhile before I can start my seeds. 🤨 I’ve never used grow lights before, but you’ve inspired me to do so this year. Happy Planting!

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety +1

      You could definitely use potting soil when up-potting. Grow lights are a game changer!

    Maybe you can help me with this. I use grow lights and heating mat to start my fees and they germinate really well and they look beautiful and everything is great. Whenever I go to transplant them or bought them, they almost always immediately die. Am I missing something here? Can you help?

    What is fish emulsion? If you have an aquarium, could you use water from that as a fertilizer?

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      It’s basically fish byproduct. Has loads of nutrients in it.

  • @ElderandOakFarm
    @ElderandOakFarm Před 2 lety

    I don't see how people use potting mix for seed starting. The chunks, & I always have more issues with fu gus gnats bwca8se they're the bags that are usually sitting outside, with holes, getting rained on, getting moldy, etc.

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      I know some will sift it to get the big chunks out but I think it’s easier to just buy the seed mix

    • @ElderandOakFarm
      @ElderandOakFarm Před 2 lety

      @@BerkeleyFarms yea I used to do that & realized I was having a lot more issues with mold/algae, & Insects like fungus gnats... so I think ots worth the extra $! I still have some issues with fungus gnats though so I've been using gnatrol & so far so good this year!!!

  • @amberlennox846
    @amberlennox846 Před 2 lety

    Love the info you shared. I start my seeds inside, then they graduate to the greenhouse. How do you keep soil damp without overwatering/drying out?

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety +1

      Same here. Most of mine are started indoors and moved to greenhouse upon germination. For watering, I tend to just go off of look. My plants don't get watered much. Once they look like they are stressed a little, I know it's time to water. I feel like it makes for a hardier plant in the long run.

  • @melissaecfeedfeedefeederfe9442

    I'm confused about the grow light---all the grow lights I've seen are LED. Do I need fluorescent? I'm quiet a newby to all of this. What is up potting?

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  Před 2 lety

      I can't really speak to the success of an LED shop light because I've never used one as a grow light so I'd hate to steer you wrong. I know that fluorescent works great. I have heard that the different colors the LED emits will have an effect on the growth of the plants but, again, that's about the extent of my knowledge.
