A string of Christmas tree lights that uses no more than 15w of power will warm a tray of seedlings and help them sprout.
You know the little twinkle lights. If you can get Halloween lights (purple) these are the best for the seedlings too.

So simple and beautiful! I have extremely limited space and so do a lot of germination in my bedroom. This is perfect!

HOT WATER BOTTLE underneath plywood with lots of holes drilled in it you could encase it in silver foil box with some holes in top for ventilation
Or just a hot water bottle under ply wood with holes drilled in ply so heat is evenly distributed

I guess those aren't LEDs, since they wouldn't put enough heat out to work. A commenter below called them incandescent rope light, which makes more sense. Thanks for this money-saving video!

Led's would not be good, since they don't get warm. Only electric bulb lights get warm, but they have the disadvantage they could burn out.

This won't work LEDs don't emit any heat.

they do produce heat! not a lot but enough to warm a small area. My kids have them in all their rooms.

terrible idea for heat, LED's are too efficient at producing light. very little heat as a bi-product.

Also using a stapler to attach is dangerous, nick the plastic, you get leaks, hit the wire you get sparks. Spring for the cheap plastic holders for the rope light. Much safer.

lol, this is so stupid, I have these led rope lights on my deck. they won't melt snow, they have no heat out put .... LED

Actually, there is such a thing as an incandescent rope light. I think the woman in the video made a mistake when she said LED. But incandescent rope light does emit some heat. I may get this a try because I have about five 10x20 plant trays I need to keep warm and buying individual heating pads are going to add up.

You are completely right. The proper rope lights are made from LCD lights. I have been looking everywhere but the lcd rope lights were taken off the shelf.

Maybe with the plants on top its just a bit of heat and all you need for seeds. You don’t want to cook the seeds. Unlike keeping plants warm in winter which I’m looking for ideas for that in an UN heated building, I will use non led string lights. And the other comment. Germinating takes complete darkness? Not true. In elementary school we did put our pots with brand in the school closet to sprout faster but the seeds in your garden are in the sun during the day or do you have a light switch to turn that off. And in nature seeds are not covered by anything unless a few leaves so ok maybe not a totally correct video but using statements that are also wrong to take down a person is spiteful to me.

EVERYONE ALL READY SAID IT! THAT KIND OF LED DONT PUT OFF HEAT, BUT. ALL WAYS A BUT, BUT IF YOU USE A 100 WATT LED LIGHT AND MAKE THAT WOOD PIECE ALLUMINIUM TO DRAW THE HEAT AWAY LIKE A HEAT SINK THAT WOULD PUT OFF SOME GOOD HEAT!! JUST SAYING OLD ONE LEGGED JOSEPH T RETIRED NAVY

Sorry, but as cheap as heat mats are, I don't really see this being any advantage over just buying them.
If the reason is because you want to heat a larger area, maybe heat tape (the kind your wrap around piping to keep it from freezing) run back and forth on top of a sheet of polystyrene insulation board, then covered by a thin layer of sand which you'd then cover with say 6 mil plastic sheeting.
Btw you'd want to remove the built in thermal switch that comes with the heat tape (as this is set to only come on when near freezing) and put in one of those temperature controls for heat mats. This might come out cheaper for something like a 4'x 8' area rather than 18 heat mats, lol, idk.

10" x 20" heat mats are $40. This seems cheaper
