  • Suzanne reacts to Rigoberta Bandini’s live performance of “Ay mamá” during the segunda semifinal of Benidorm Fest 2022. The Semi-Final 2 winner featured a large globe that looked like a breast as she addressed stigma of the female body (and more broadly topics like menstruation, breastfeeding and body shaming).

You absolutely understood perfectly the message of the song. That was one of our top concerns, if people were going to understand the message and you just hit all the buttons. Was it easy to get the message only with the visual components? Thanks very much :)

She is one of the fauvorite songs to be elected for Eurovision. She song talks about feminity and reividication. In the song and being a little girl, she is talking to her mother and ask her why they couldn't go to the city with their breast naked. Just like a reindication of them like the women they are. In Spanish when you say "mama", you can translate that to "mommy" or "breast" (that's why she repeats that so much). Using that like a reivindication of feminity and freedom. Nowadays, a woman is not able to show her breast but men can in many places (for exmple, Eurovision). It is used for sex, breastfeeding and for life. So she asks her mother. "why are our teats so scary?".
Women are still invisible in many countries, the reivindication of the naked breast is a symbol of freedom of women (like a person, like a female, like a mother, etc).

I think this performance has got a lot of symbolism and detail. What it represents and a great song that anyone can sing no matter what language do you speak, you can sing it.
Also, every person that I know is talking about this performance.
This act has grown in me over this week and in my opinion it should be the song that represents Spain this spring in Torino.

it is through testimonies like Suzanne's (thanks for sharing a so sincere and intimate one!) that Eurovision continues to make sense. Just 2, 3 women are enough to be impacted by the meaning of this lyrics. these 2, 3 women can reflect, they can also do different, pass it on to their offspring (if they have it) and that change will continue to happen in the generations that follow them. This sharing, for me (who was already a fan of the music - along with others from this incredible selection from Spain) makes me even more appreciate this music and Eurovision. Thank you Suzanne!

I love that "Ay mamá" makes us think, and analyze the world, the weight of patriarchy, and Suzanne with her thoughts reflects this beautifully. This is not only a reaction to the most complete act of Benidorm (art, identity, performance, even if the staging wasn't as good), but also a call to be ourselves, and personally I love this kind of song and entry for Eurovision. Enough divas, enough gorgeous people being flawless. We need more truthful stuff, not the hegemonic standard being reminded every single year.

It`s has been a long long time I haven`t interested in this festival. But something great woke me up watching the two semifinals. After going through this long "pandemy" it made me feel so happy. I couldn`t believed that I have lost my hope and faith. It was a pity that only five people of the jury got ruined all of that against most of the spanish people wanted. We lost again. My favourite songs are Ay Mama, Tanxugueiras y Blanca Paloma "Sonidos del Agua" .
I Agree with all you´ve just said. I feel very disappointed.
I am sure I will listen these three songs many times and I WILL ENJOY LISTENING TO THEM AGAIN AND AGAIN

I absolutely love your interpretation, you're damn right! It is a celebration to women, more specifically women's breasts and liberation, as the "Liberty leading the people" by Delacroix painting shows (with one breast out). Mothers breastfeeding their kids outdoors are being shamed, women are all being shamed about showing their breasts, even not wearing a bra under a tshirt! Maternity being underrated and not realising that's our next generation. Ageing women and soggy tits (as they call them). The way Belen (main backing vocals) has got unshaved armpits. The way Esteban (partner and father of her child) is supporting the protagonist. The whole piece, although not specifically polished for Eurovision, is making people think, and talk, and that it is wholesome a beautiful all around.❤❤❤❤

    Ay Mamá (traducción al Inglés)
    Artista: Rigoberta Bandini
Canción: Ay Mamá •Álbum: Ay Mamá
    Español
    A A
    Ay Mamá
    [Estrofa 1]

    Mama, mama, mama

    [Estribillo]
Por tantas mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Todas las mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama

    [Estrofa 2]
Tú que amarraste bien tu cuerpo a mi cabeza
Con ganas de llorar pero con fortaleza

    [Pre-Estribillo]
    Escúchame mama, mama, mama
    Paremos la ciudad
Sacando un pecho fuera al puro еstilo Delacroix
    Mama, mama, mama

    [Estribillo]
Por tantas mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Todas las mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama (Mami)

    [Puente]
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Vivan las mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama

    [Outro]
No sé por qué dan tanto miedo nuestras tеtas36
Sin ellas no habría humanidad ni habría belleza
    Y lo sabes bien
    Escúchame, mama, mama, mama
