  • In 2019, a report highlighted by MIT Technology Review revealed the rapid expansion of China’s AI talent pool. The report’s key insight was intriguing: the count of top-tier AI researchers of Chinese descent had increased tenfold over the past decade, but only a small fraction chose to remain in China for their work, with the majority relocating to the US.
The think tank responsible for the report has now released an updated study, illustrating the transformation in the global AI talent landscape during a pivotal period marked by significant industry shifts and the emergence of AI as the most sought-after technology sector.
MacroPolo, the think tank of the Paulson Institute, which concentrates on US-China relations, conducted a comprehensive study on the nationality, educational background, and current professional affiliations of leading researchers who presented and had their papers accepted at NeurIPS, a premier AI academic conference. Their analysis of the 2019 conference led to the creation of the inaugural Global AI Talent Tracker. They have now analyzed the NeurIPS conference held in December 2022 to provide an updated perspective three years later.
Here are the four key insights about the current state of the global AI talent pool:
    1. China’s Role in AI Talent Development Has Grown
    2. AI Researchers Tend to Remain in Their Country of Graduation
    3. The US Continues to Attract the Majority of AI Talent, But China is Gaining Ground
    4. Top-Tier AI Researchers Are Increasingly Choosing to Work in Their Home Countries
The race to retain premier AI researchers within their home countries is intensifying, particularly as the gap in research facilities, job prospects, remuneration, and living standards among nations is closing. Establishing an environment and culture that not only preserves local talent but also draws in scholars from abroad is a challenging endeavor, yet numerous countries are currently striving towards this goal. The evolution of this scenario in the forthcoming years will indeed be intriguing to observe.

With 1.4 billions population, the report is not difficult to figure out. At the rate of AI progresses, the number of AI specialists will only rise at an accelerated rate in China. This could be another threat to the US and it wouldn't be a surprise that the US will ban Chinese researchers from entering the US or participate in exchange programs. This is unfortunate in the area of scholastic development but this is a fact of life now. Tell us what you think about Chinese AI researchers that are on the rise in AI. Is it a threat or good for AI development. Thank you for sharing!

India too has scope to do so. I mean every reputed Stats , Maths and CS departments in the US and Europe often have atleast one Indian and one Chimese person.
India and China will secure their place as world leaders as it has been before for centuries. However, we must resolve our border issues and work collaboratively.

If these people are experts, why is Chinese AI, so bad.
By all reports, these researchers download and copy ChatGPT, and then try to improve on it with Chinese branding.
Part of the failure is mandarin, as a language which uses fanciful words like dragons and mythical ideas from the past, instead of a language rooted in reality, efforts to use a.i. in mandarin is laugh out loud, funny (there's video).
They try and come to the U.S., because they have no other options or ways to gain expertise.
If they developed their expertise in China, their a.i. would be a lot better even with the shortcomings of their language, are these experts made up by the CCP?
Also there are credible reports, that their population is well under a billion, but, let's not offend the Chinese people and ignore the exaggerations.

How come you're so arrogant and ignorant at the same time?

@@48Dileep IBM has deep mind, Facebooks AI has no public name, Google AI is still secret but they admit to building quantum computers as a platform for their a.i., Microsoft has a program, and there is OpenAI, with versions of Chat GPT.
      Where exactly are we behind?
What University's inChina are working on a.i., what can you point to.
Where are the experts learning and training? Why are they coming to the U.S., instead od stay and making China #1, in a.i., why not set the example, and shock the world with a.i. we can all test and have our jaws fall open in awe, and envy?
