Here is my review on the Altra Vanish Carbons, I told you I would give.
I have been running for about year and a half now. I run trails and dirt roads in my Olympus 4's and roads in my Torin's. Absolutely love both shoes and have put many miles on them. I ran Grandma's Marathon in my Torin 5's.
I decided to pull the trigger on the Vanish Carbon's because I wanted something light with lots of stack height for comfort on my long runs. I have a herniated disc and need comfort. I was also looking at the Vanish Tempo's but figured if I am going to spend money then let's spend money and be done.
What I was concerned about was the slim fit. I love my Torin's because they are Altra's standard fit and my feet feel good in them, especially as they swell up on long hot runs. My Olympus 4's are size 10. I have always been a size 10 but when I got my Torin's I had to up 1/2 size. There was no place around where I live that sells the Vanish's, so I had to cross my fingers and pull the trigger online.
They arrived quickly from Altra and after unboxing I really liked the overall look and color. They do take a bit longer to get on your feet. The slim fit and super flimsy tongue makes it hard. Once on they felt locked on. Unfortunately, they also felt too small. I noticed my toes where a little snug. I went out for a 5-mile run and they felt like they might work. They were light and fast and after 3 miles as my legs tired a bit, I could really notice the cushion and spring the overed. Today I went out and did 15 miles. Again, I noticed they want to go fast and had to fight to keep my pace slow in the beginning. As the run progressed and my feet swelled, I could tell they were crammed. My toes are going to feel it tomorrow.
What I did notice is how the extra cushion kept my knees and ankles feeling strong. Normally on longer runs my ankles will hurt and I get some runners knee in my left knee. So, I was very happy about that. Even as my legs tired, I felt like I could turn them over easier.
So.... I just read Altra's return policy and they are going back. However, I am ordering a size 11. I like them I just need to find the right size. I sure wish Altra offered these in their standard width. I will let everyone know how the new ones work in the bigger size. In my opinion, if you have wide feet these might not be the shoe for you. Stay tuned.

Thank you so much for your review. I am agree that many people may have to size up on their slim fit shoes. Altra sizing is always a bit of an adventure. I tried the new Mont Blanc trail shoes in my normal size, but returned them because I couldn't get the heal to stop slipping.
I later got to try out a half size down and figured out they would have worked. I couldn't have gone down in size more than that or the shoes would be too short for me.
I tend to buy my shoes pretty big, as long as the heal and mid foot lock down, I don't mind extra room in the forefoot. It gives the toes a bit of more room to splay and swell.

Nice review. I agree about the price. My brother paid 260 for the carbon. Hoka new carbon shoe for trails is $200. It seems all shoes are going up in price. My Mach 4 jumped $20 to the Mach 5 version. I hope we see some reductions soon as material and shipping costs go down. A 40 ft container is $8000 which used to be $3500. This is causing everything to go up due to transport costs but it will not last into next year.

In our running careers, stretching back to the mid 1990s, the price of a serviceable pair of running shoes has more than doubled. And at the top end it's gone through the roof. Running used to be such a cheap sport...

It is interesting. There was a time that I did not buy Hoka's because they were more expensive. That is not the case now. Fortunately, I did have a discount coupon when I purchased these shoes.

Updated review on my Altra Vanish Carbons. My first pair were 10.5's. After they came and I tried them on they felt a bit snug. My big toe was about a half a thumbnail from the end. I ran a 5 mile and then a 15 mile run. During the 15 mile run my feet swelled up and I could tell my toes were taking a beating. It ruined the experience of everything the shoe offers. Altra let me return them for a full refund and I ordered size 11's. I got them and tried them on. They felt like the right size but Ifelt a little heel slippage so I snugged them up a bit and tied a runners knot. Once running I had no issues with any slippage and they felt excellent. They are a more difficult shoe to put on but they are only for racing so such is life. I went out for a 16 mile run with some marathon paces. When hen I hit marathon paces i could feel the spring from the carbon plate and all that cushion felt really comfortable. Where I really noticed a difference from my other shoes, happened late into the run. My ankles felt strong and my knees felt even better. Normally those two things are what starts to fatigue on me. All in all I do like the shoe however why does Altra have such an issue with their sizing? I own size 10 Olympus trail shoes, size 10.5 Torins, and now size 11 with the Vanish. My hope is Altra will come out with the Vanish in the Standard fit rather than the slim. My Torins continue to be my favorite shoe but just lack the stack height for those longer runs.

Thanks for the update! I continue to be an Altra fan for their footshaped toebox and zero drop platform. I have also had some issues with sizing, shoelace length and sometimes quick outsole wear. They do seem like a good company as far as customer service goes. I was able to return the Mont Blancs when I could not get the heel to stop slipping. I also had the issue with the outsole starting to come off my Torin 6's after only 40 miles - they replaced them. I am glad to hear you are having a good experience with the Vanish Carbons now that you found the right size.

@@TheOldUltraRunner Ill keep in contact with you as I get more miles on them. I primarily will only use them for marathons but will probably run my 20 mile runs in them as well. I should probably pick up a pair of Vanish Tempos for my long runs. They just save on all that late mile leg fatigue. Keep making awesome videos.

Hi Jay, I'm looking into picking up a pair of Vanish Tempos, but the weight is a little discouraging. Can you please tell me your thoughts on Ego Pro midsole VS. FF Blast?
Would you say that the vanish tempos conserve one's energy because of the rockered design as well?
    Thanks

I am currently running in the Torins but looking to upgrade to these as my daily trainer for most miles. Would you say this shoe is noticeably more fun to run in and well worth the extra cost over the Torins? I find myself wishing the Torins had a bit more stack height and energy return. I enjoy a soft bouncy shoe. Also did you find the rocker to be distracting or natural feeling?

    • @TheOldUltraRunner
      @TheOldUltraRunner  Před 2 lety +1

I do enjoy my Torins. I find them very comfortable for long runs and recovery days.
The Vanish Tempos just feel much quicker with a more responsive foam and the rocker. I do not find the rocker distracting at all and really enjoy the ride. They even feel good to me on slower paced runs as well. The biggest possible drawbacks to the Vanish Tempos are the price, they are slim fit (so a bit narrower fit), and I still don't know how durable they are (so far, it looks promising).

Mine are still ok, I have about 110 miles.
The outsole rubber does seem to wear pretty quickly. I think that I will get at least 200 miles.

@@TheOldUltraRunner exactly. The outside rubber has worn through now, in the same spot as yours. I so loved the feeling of these shoes. However, I contacted Altra and they reimbursed me , no questions asked, I didn’t even need to send the shoe in! The photos were enough. I also showed them my Garmin shoe tracker and they could see I only had them for a month. Such a shame.

I like them both. Both very comfortable. I would give a slight edge to the Torins for comfort. However, the midsole and the rocker geometry in the Vanish Tempos definitely make them feel faster.
I still don't know the durability of the Vanish Tempos and they cost more. However, I am enjoying them so far. I have fewer miles in the Tempos because I hurt the side of my foot and was unable to comfortably run in them for awhile. Happy to say my foot is better and I ran in them this week.
