Description
I am a long time runner. I run mostly marathons, and ultramarathons, but some shorter distances as well. I feel like I have learned some things to share about injury prevention and tips to perform well in ultramarathons. I am also hoping to share some stories from some of my awesome friends. I have not done public speaking in quite some time so that is a work in progress. My editing skills improving with each video so hopefully you'll like, subscribe, and leave a few comments to let me know that there are people out there that actually watch my videos.

I’m still rocking the escalante 3 and Torin 5 😂
Hi, Is Escalante much narrower than Loan Peak 8?
It's hard to understand the info they are giving on their website in terms of fit. Torin is standard and escalante original. But i see they look the same here while some people call them standard fit. I have wide feet so i need the widest option.
Hope The Badger goes to plan.
Both good shoes with different uses, yet some overlap. I wouldn't use the Escalante for long runs, and I wouldn't use the Torin for uptempo workouts. Else, they're interchangeable for daily training.
I agree with you. Thank you for watching!

Nice review, Jay. Rabbit is one of those lifestyle apparel companies that's getting into running shoes.
I got to see their new running shoes. Way to soft and unstable for me. I do wish them success.
@@TheOldUltraRunner indeed
It was great seeing you, Jay, this past weekend. Wishing you the best at Badger!!
Thank you Mari! It was great seeing you! A huge congratulations on your race! 120 miles is a fantastic accomplishment!
Good luck Jay. You will do well.
Thank you, Butch!
Good luck with the Badger hope it all goes well. enjoy and do your best. you got this 👍🏃🏅
Fingers crossed! Thank you!
I was wondering when the next update was upcoming. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching! My confidence is not very time. However, it is time to see how it goes.
You've got this.
I just bought the + version of this on amazon, is there a difference> I saw they were 10 bucks more than the go air sport regulars. I cannot find any info about this
I am sorry, I don't know either
Not heard about fit comparison v3 vs v4...fit the same? Toe box width comparoson? Length?
I think the length feels slightly longer. I think the width is probably about the same, however, the stretchier knit upper lets it feel more accommodating.
Living out in the middle of nowhere, a headlamp is vital. You don't know what sort of fauna you will run into. Thanks, Jay.
You probably get more use from headlamps than I do. I use it a fair amount on some of my crazy events that go overnight. Thank you for watching, Michael!!!
@@TheOldUltraRunner Always, Jay
I got this treadmill and it's too big to get through our doorways of our house. It's still in the garage Any ideas?
I think you can remove the supports and console and then reassemble. I was able to find an owners manual by searching on Google
Have you noticed any difference in the foam life? I have had some of the early Topo's and the foam wasn't my favorite ride. Magnafly, Phantom 2, magnafly 2. Interested to try the cyclone ride. Looks like you've already worn thru the cyclone outsole. Looking more as a daily trainer use. Cyclone may not hold up long if used for that i suppose.
The foam of the Cyclone 2 still feels good and bouncy 200 miles in. However, the outsole rubber is pretty thin. I am adding shoe goo to attempt to increase the life.
I can only speak to the Cyclone 2, which I enjoy. Thx, Jay.
They are good shoes!!!

What are a good pair of Topos for standing around all day?
I like my Topo Phantom 3's for standing around all day on concrete at the running store
Wait, isn't commando underwear an oxymoron?
😂, yes I agree! I think they are trying to say they are so lightweight and thin that it feels like wearing nothing.
I wear compression underwear under my shorts as well. Highly recommend for any workouts, not just running.
I have become a fan as well over the past few years
Had you asked me a decade ago, I would have said Altra. But since the VF Corp buyout, Altra has changed. Now I have to say Topo.
Went to my local fleet feet to try some altra's on as i've never worn them. Been wearing cheap barefoot shoes in the office but needed something for everything else and deliveries. I believe i tired the paradigm 6 as they were on sale. They felt good but the toe box felt really loose and the side to side movement was not good. Then I tried the magniflys'. everything from the upper to the tongue felt like a step up. A bit more rocker but not much more. the midsole did feel stiffer but being a bigger guy, that would actually benefit me, I cant speak for all altras but i have seen a lot of people upset with their quality.
@@midnitestate good shoes 👞
Thanks for the review! Would you say it runs smaller or a larger side for it's size? I'm In between medium and large.
I think that I am going to have trouble answering for a few days. I am out of town and do not remember what size I purchased. I know mine is large on me, I got mine on clearance, but I didn't mind because I could layer other clothes under it.
@@TheOldUltraRunnerany updates ? Thank you.
I have an XL. I would say they are probably pretty true to size. Definitely don't run small.
The Badger is getting close now Jay, good idea to test out the gear, at least you got the 1/2 ticked off & you're confident with the kit 👍
Yes, I did run about 20 miles, so I think it was good for a long run.
Question: if you have a size 42 foot. Do you buy a Large (42-44) and cut off a piece with a scissor? Or how does it work? I have size 44/44.5 and I don't know what size to buy.
I would, you can definitely trim them
Very good video thank you so much!
Thank you, Lusya!
Compliments to the volunteers of this Hell's Half Acre Marathon. That's true commitment working overnight. I hope you remembered to lube up the hotspots. 😅
Totally agree! It takes a special person to stay up all night and support some crazy runners. Lube is a must for longer runs, especially in the summer.
@@TheOldUltraRunner 👍
Keep pushing through, you're doing great, Jay. Looking forward to seeing how your journey unfolds!
Thank you, Mihai!!
Wow, your commitment to those 18.1 miles on a treadmill deserves major props, Jay! Watching the Western States livestream to stay engaged was a stroke of genius. Keep rocking those long runs and staying strong in the heat. You're crushing it!
Thank you, Mihai! I just hope that I am getting enough done to finish the Badger race
New heel lugs look beefed up
They do look pretty beefy!
Nice compairson. I've enjoyed the 3s, although I noticed that there is a crease between the big toe and 2nd toe. I can see a slight crease in your 3s as well. Wondered if they fixed that in the 4s. Super comfortable on road though, so I'm going for the 4s regardless!
I have not seen it in my pair of 4's yet. I have about 85 miles on my pair. However, it might still happen, I tend to raise my big toe quite a bit Thank you for watching!!!
Can't beat Balega socks. They're plush, and they last for hundreds of miles.
Thank you for watching, my friend!
@@TheOldUltraRunner Always, my friend. :-)
how do they compare to topo's magnifly 5? i swear by the escalante racers but want to try other options
The Escalantes are very slightly bouncier and weigh about .2 ounce less. The Magnifly 5's definitely feel more cushioned and appear to have a more durable outsole.
The differences between the Escalante & the Rivera always befuddled me. Thx, Jay.
Thank you, sir!!!
@@TheOldUltraRunner of course
Please compare Magnifly vs. Escalante
Thank you for watching! I am planning to do the Magnifly vs. Escalante comparison. Probably publishing next week. Quick thoughts - the Escalante foam is slightly bouncier, the Magnifly definitely feels more cushioned.
It's always a sad day when a shoe reaches end-of-life. But, there's a certain satisfaction placing them into the shoe recycling bin at my local running shoe store. I know that someone somewhere will get as much enjoyment out of them as I did.
I completely agree!!!
@@TheOldUltraRunner 👍
Topos usually fit me well, but this shoe was too narrow even though I sized up. Not in the forefoot, but in the anterior medial midfoot. The ball of my foot, the base joint of my first toe really, just overlaps the sole and starts to hurt after 500 meters. Loving my Cyclone 2, no such problem there. Altras neither. Never had this with any other shoe, really, not even "normal" road or traul shoes.
Very interesting. I have not had an issue. The shoes all fit us a little differently. Thank you very much for sharing your experience! I assume you were able to return them?
@@TheOldUltraRunner THanks for asking, unfortunately no. My first test run was too short to realize the problem, I guess my prior great experience with Cyclone 2 clouded my judgment and made me uncritical. I ended up taking them on a long, muddy, painful hike next, so returning them isn't a viable option anymore. I guess I'll experiment with aftermarket insoles and thick socks before donating them. I'm wondering now if my eagerly awaited Specter 2 will be Cyclone-shaped or MT5-shaped... Here's to hoping. I'm sneaking around purchasing Nnormal Kjerags at this poipnt, they're somewhat wide in the toebox and have "only" 6mm drop. Love your channel and its vibe btw. Regards from Berlin
@@Boulevardfree Thank you! The NNormal Kjerags have a nice bouncy midsole. I hope the Specter 2 works for you, I am definitely looking forward to giving a pair a try!
18 miles on a treadmill...thats dedication.
Back in 2020, I did a lot of running on the treadmill including long runs. I even ran the Dreadmill 100 in December of 2020. Since then, I seem to have PTSD related to the treadmill. It was very difficult going 18 miles, definitely prefer outside.
I’m going through the same, Jay! I have had a hard time motivating myself to go out for my runs in this humidity. I’ve been doing more strength training in the meantime. Wishing you the best at the Badger! I know you will get it done!
Thank you, Maribel! I think this will be my last time to sign up for an August 100.
I feel your pain. It's been triple digits going into the teens here in NorCal. Makes training a challenge since I disdain the dreadmill. Cheers, Jay.
Thank you, Michael! I think that this will be my last long August race.
@@TheOldUltraRunner understandable
Did you run with one model on one for and the other model on the other foot to feel the difference? I have Escalante 3 for less than a year and I look forward to buying Escalate 4 as soon as they are available here in Malaysia (or on Amazon…)
I did not run with model on each foot.

I’m starting to like topo more than altra the only road shoe from altra I can really enjoy is the escalante 3 the I’ve had problems with early outsole wear on the torin and Rivera
I am a fan of both Altra and Topo shoes. I am currently finding more favorites within the Topo lineup currently. My biggest negative with Altra over the years (for me) has been outsole wear on their road shoes.
I did my first run in them today on my trip to Indiana. Thanks for fitting them for me! LISTEN TO THIS MAN! He knows trail shoes!!!
Thank you, Tyler! I am glad to hear you had a good run today. I hope it is a little cooler in Indiana.
Nice comparison, Jay.

According to runrepeat teardown, the 3 weighs 9.5 ounce and the 4 weighs 8.4 ounce for a US 9. I remember reading somewhere at an Altra fans page that Altra is not using the weight of a US 9 now. And both 4 and Racer 2 are listed as original fit on Altra website. Runrepeat teardown supported that, their widest point at the toebox best that of Olympus
Interesting! I realized when I weighed them before I had the insoles out of my Escalante 3's. ,,,, 😜When I reported weights in the video though I used the size 9 from Altra website. Weighing my men's size 11.5, I am getting 10.5 ounces for the Escalante 3 and 9.95 ounces for the Escalante 4. It does appear the 4's are lighter. I pulled out the insoles from the 2 versions of the shoes and they appear identical to me. However, the 4's do feel a little wider, but they could just be due to the stretchier upper.
@@TheOldUltraRunner lighter is always good, and wider too (for me) 😁🤞
