- I like how filmmakers recreated this battle from the anime! They changed the outcome a little bit, of course, but overall that was really close and really good!

This movie isn't good, but the care and attention to detail in recreating scenes from the anime is nothing short of phenomenal. It shows that they had respect for the original movie.
why did they put an M1 reload sound effect for the gun.
This movie completely misses the point of this scene in the anime. She pushes herself beyond the breaking point and destroys her shell trying and failing to open the tank in the anime. It shows how far the Major is willing to go by potentially killing herself, but also that she is still human and capable of self-sacrifice. She's then saved by a friend. This movie had nice visuals but is otherwise pointless, even the action scenes are boring and listless.
I'd have to slightly disagree. In the original, her friend saves her. It's a stereotypical trope hero who fails but her greatest friend(Batou) saves her at the last moment. In this scene you have the same struggle, only that she manages to pull through, her Humanity was stronger than her cyborg side(Spider Robot) and she manages to overcome the struggle. It's a very symbolic scene that is captured in this movie and maybe a heightened sense of importance without Batou saving her.

Batou coming in clutch with that experimental cannon. God, I loved that movie when I first saw it. And I loved Stand Alone Complex. Haven't seen the rest yet.

A missed opportunity. The original film was about what it means to be human. This remake was about who The Major was before she got her body and joined Section 9. It's has many of the visual elements, but not the philosophical ones.

Damn that fires a lot slower than the tank in the Anime.
It's on EZ mode.
The anime fight is so much more intense because every time the major steps out of cover a literal shit storm of bullets plows through the space where she's standing. Also they missed out on the really beautiful shot of the robot destroying the tree of life up to the Hominid branch.
Anime is paper played over and over their frames are far worse than the ones in reality.
And weren't the anime ones way more agile? With wheels on the legs
i enjoyed the clip. thanks for sharing. I loved the comic book as a kid, Appleseed, and then a few graphic novels like GiTS. I never did like Shirow's constant random nonsensical "philosophies" (a bit like George Lucas nattering on about midiclorians) and appreciated the Major's new personable subplots like her 'mom'. that was cool. it hinted of a future without belaboring the past.
I agree with others though, about this clip in particular, when Batou saves the day. the scene was supposed to show her limitations.

i like how they stayed true to various iconic scenes from the original, but they left out quite a few and placed those reenacted scenes out of order ontop of various plot changes.
Its like they took a scissor to an original VHS copy and taped everything back together.

Cause that was kinda stupid. In the anime major does all that work to bring it down and it's a five minute fight, then fails and it's brought down in five seconds by Batou and his op gun that he can hold that can shoot through a tank

Aside from the fact that the Major battles a Spider Tank, it's nothing like the original. For example, WHERE they are fighting in the original (the museum) has a lot of weight, making a point in showing different fossils, hinting to the evolution of organisms up to the "present" when biological is not the only way any longer. A literal fight between biological and machine and a figurative one as well. All this comes out just from the scene of the fight.
It has been replaced with generic destroyed looking street we've seen a million times before, which tells us nothing.
Even the fight itself has been toned down and made almost bland. Just to point out the scene where she rips that hatch off. She looks like she's having a shit, not like she's having a strong moment, where it's all or nothing, where, indeed, she rips herself apart in order to stop the tank.
So much crap in just 4 minutes. The rest of the film is just as poorly executed, turning a great cyberpunk tell into a slick nonsense. This film was such a disappointment, but it's not because of the lead, it's because of the producers and director not putting in the effort to (or not willing to) understand the source material. One may be thinking that the people behind the movie only wanted to milk a great franchise.
i agree entirely, I think if they had worked on it for allot longer than MAYBE it wouldnt have been so bad, i watched the original anime and compared to that this movie looks like a bunch of school children made it.
This setting isnt some generic boring looking street, its the place where Motoko and Hideo were living as runaways before they were murdered by Hanka

seriously all this film achieved is to "kill the franchise" and goddamit it's a good thing: after this trainwreck they'll hopefully leave Shirow and Oshii's legacy alone but what am I saying! they already poured all of their bodily fluids over them by copying every grain of storytelling and artistic content (no need to say they couldn't even steal it properly, sad stuff really...)
