That's true if you saw it at the time. This scene pioneered lots of stuff that's so common now it doesn't register as anything out of the ordinary. The digital double of Legolas, the fluid animation of the troll, the handheld camera integrated with CGI. More than anything, the staging Peter used was ingenious - the culmination of years of experience in low budget cinema. This scene earned the price of admission on its own.

I remember seeing the first part of the trilogy and thinking, wow, if this spectacular action scene was just the battle of Moria, which had been basically a skirmish in the book compared to Helm's Deep or Minas-Tirith siege, what would those be like. And indeed they delivered.

The reason why fans tend to use “Goblin” to mean “mountain/cave orc” is because the Hobbit book, which features said mountain/cave orcs, favors the g-word over “orc”.

One thing I've come to love about this fight? The idea that, should that Troll land a solid hit, that guy is done for. Balin's coffin gets smashed, a stone bridge gets shattered, two orcs get splattered like flies by accident, Boromir gets tossed across the room and winded for a full minute, Aragorn gets hit by a glancing blow and is knocked out...
There is just an ever-present sense of danger the longer that troll is alive and swinging.
Rings of Power's troll battle can frankly be tossed in the garbage for being the LITERAL opposite of this scene.

What makes this scene work is the subversion of tension.
    At first.
You see the skeleton fall and the noise echo. No music. No other dialogue. Just the expressions of our characters and a quick shot around Moria.
We have a chance to breathe with our Fellowship, Gandalf dresses down the idiot and we get ready to move on.
Then the drums. One at first. Then another. And another in succession. A shadow stirs in the deep, and the light grows brighter . . .

Aragorn and Boromir stopping the cave troll standing on sam, Aragorn saving Boromir and at 3:46 Legolas shooting the troll in the shoulder, saving Gimli. Those are just a few examples, but probably my favourites. There's this constant notion in the fight that no one in the fellowship would survive very long without the cooperation of the others.

Over the years, I've come to find myself relating more and more to Boromir. He's not nobility, not a Elvish prince or a lost king, just the son of what is essentially Gondor's middle-management structures. He has no supernatural abilities to draw on. He's lived every day in the shadow of evil, and his life is one long headache. He knows the end is on the horizon, and even though he's convinced of the hopelessness of the struggle, he goes along with it. Thrown in with a group of strangers he's charged with the protection of what are essentially four children, and he does his best to protect them (with a few key failings). He's the first to take action in this scene, to make a move to shut the doors, and he's greeted with two arrows near the face (foreshadowing his death).
With climate catastrophe looming, billionaires controlling world economies, and the rise of modern dictatorships, I really resonate with the exhaustion, the irony, and the sense that, yes, shit will always get worse, but, oh well, draw swords in that line "they have a cave troll."

the detail is so good in these movies, especially when it comes to legolas, first he tries to send an arrow top down but it doesn’t work so he has to kill it from underneath, also love how he uses more arrows for bigger targets, he uses three against an olyphant in rotk

I feel like the filmmakers did such a good job with moments like this, not only by going through all the hard work to create these large backgrounds and areas, but it also pays tribute to the book which describes in rich detail what everything looks like to set a mood.

People cannot imagine how beautiful Moria/Dwarrowdelf was in its prime. This was the most important dwarf kingdom of middle earth, greater than the lonely mountain. In The Hobbit, they show the lonely mountian in its prime, so you can try to imagine that x3 for Moria
