When I watched MJ with the Wizards, what stood out to me was just how high his basketball IQ was. His athleticism was always highlighted but he was schooling players nearly half his age because he was thinking 2 steps ahead of them. And he still had that competitive fire going too. That play where he pinned Ron Mercer's shot to the glass is one of my favorites.

Ron Thompson I had a friend that knew Chris Whitney and got us good tickets cuz we was from Chicago. At halftime he knew where we could walk to greet the players when they came out. I met a few of the players but when Jordan came out everyone rushed over to us and put their hands out. I did too and Jordan gave us all the 👊🏾. I touched his fist and said I never will wash my hands again. I forgot my vow when I used the bathroom after the game🤷🏽♂️He was the only player that buttoned his warmup all the way from bottom to the top. 6’6 is taller in person then Jordan looked on court.

So well said. There is a guy, I think Jonny Arnett, who put together a video on Jordan while on Wizards and just how great he played. I would recommend watching that video so well done and you appreciate just how great he was there. The defence which was 29th the year before, only notable addition Jordan, the team defence was 6th before his knee injury!! Amazing

People don't remember that Jordan was getting better and better as that first wizard year was going along. Had the wizards at 26-21 and 3rd in the East while leading the mvp conversation. Last 10 games before the meniscus injury he was avg 30 5 and 5.

Before he got injured, Jordan kept on improving and improving and also the team was improving and the Wizards were winning games and one of the hottest teams for a stretch before the allstar break. If Jordan didnt get hurt, the Wizards were on pace to earn a playoff spot.
What if MJ wouldnt of gotten injured.
Or go back further, what if Ron Artest didnt break his ribs in the summer before his comeback. Just imagine how much success MJ would of had.

I was telling the same thing to my friend the other day, MJ with the wizards was schooling NBA players at 40 years old, I even watched a game alive where the other team put all players they could to try to stop MJ and they couldn't. He toyed with every defender they threw at him . Unbelievable

I never ever want to bash someone who has the courage to post a public opinion ESPECIALLY an opinion against the grain. But, with all due respect the deep historians and analytical thinkers of the game is what got my attention during his Wizard years. The true basketball intellects were constantly begging the public to please try to watch as many Wizard games as possible. Because what he was doing at that age was literally mind boggling. I admit I wasn't a Jordan fan. I was always a Magic guy. But, I lived in DC during those years and I couldn't believe my eyes. It would have been remarkable if at any age a player could take three years off and come back and dominate. Because MJ was dominant. He was the CLEAR and I mean CLEAR front runner for the MVP after the first 50 games of the season. A 19 win team Wizards were a LOCK to make the playoffs and they were gonna get a top seed! And they became a phenomenal defensive team. And then MJ gets hurt for the remainder of the season and the Wiz go from a 3 seed to literally out of the playoffs as they couldn't buy a win without MJ. And then you mean to tell me the following year he's gonna come back from knee surgery and average 22 pts a game at 40 yrs old? What's even more impressive as you say he shot 45% from the field.......that is INCREDIBLE because anyone who watched Wizard games knew that literally EVERY bucket MJ made as a Wizard were buckets that were high degree of difficulty. At that age he rarely got easy points via driving for layups. Nope. As a Wizard he was forced to take only outside shots and many times contested shots. If anything shooting 45 percent KNOWING every single shot was from far from the basket and contested; if anything this proves how great of a shooter he was!!! That was way more impressive than a player shooting 50% from the field and later to find out that the majority of that players shots came from 5 feet and in. Jordan shot 45% after a 3 yr layoff with majority of his shots contested and high degree of difficulty. Even the great Kobe Bryant had said no doubt MJ was still top 5 players in the world. That is insane. To put it in perspective. We all know MJ averaged over 30 a game for his career and an amazing 50% shooter. But, keep in mind MJ early in his career was getting easy buckets at the rim which where high percentage shots. So of course he would have a higher percentage when he could drive. But to still have a high percentage when he couldnt drive was mind blowing. And to tie the knot and put it in perspective: LeBron has mad respect because he is a phenomenal career percentage shooter at 50%. But- but this is where it falls apart for LeBron. And why you have to look deeper into numbers. What does every basketball player work on from the minute they play basketball? Shooting!!! Kids don't get obsessed with dribbling like shooting. And obviously MJ is arguably the greatest mid range shooter of all time as his field percentage STILL remained around 50% as he no longer could drive. Think about this with LeBron. He is a PHENOMENAL field percentage shooter at 50%. Let's look deeper into the numbers. Outside of 3 feet. I repeat outside of 3 feet- the great LeBron James is a 19% shooter!!! That is below average for a high school player. This clearly shows James has been the beneficiary of winning the genetic lottery where he is bigger and faster than everyone and simply runs like a freight chain bullying his way into lay ups and dunks. And the evidence shows when he cannot get free easy baskets; he simply fails 81 percent of the time shooting outside of 3 feet!!! Outside of 3 feet folks! That has to put a ding on him. It clearly shows he is one of the worst scorers of all time outside the rim area. Whereas MJ was a rim player when he was young. And all the haters would say "wait till MJ gets older and cant drive to the hoop anymore. How will he score cause he can't shoot?" And early in his career MJ wasnt a good shooter so the haters had a strong point. But- when the time came where MJ was forced to play outside of 3 feet: not only did he become the greatest mid range shooter but developed the second greatest shot in NBA history after Kareems sky hook. And that was MJs fade away turn around. Do people realize how difficult of a shot that is? And yet he made it into the second most automatic shot we witnessed since Kareems sky hook.
Guys it's about appreciating genius. Or you can even say like Mozart; a revelation. It's literally when you see it, your eyes tell you ok this is different. There is something more at work here whatever it is. My eyes told me noway will we ever see another MJ. Just like we havent seen another Ali. Or in tennis a player like Roger Federer. Even if you dont agree he's the best; your eyes tell you he is far superior talented to his peers. Or a Mario Lemieux in hockey. How did a 6'5 two hundred forty pound hockey player look as smooth as Gretzky. And that's how I came to appreciate MJ. I realized this is just different. It not just looks different. It feels different. He told his teammates that he will never face a Game 7 in a Finals. And if he does, he will win it and leave them for being in that position. The risky position of a Game 7. Hence in 6 Finals he never faced an elimination game. Not one time!
And yes teammates......many didn't like playing with him because it was so high stress. .......but, as Larry Bird said- "if you wanna have fun, you play with LeBron. If you wanna win, I'm playing with Kobe." Point is- to be a goat your end game is always winning. And if you lose, you find a way to win. You don't join forces. And I leave you with that: Jordan needed Pippen? Jordan won his first ring with only one All Star on the roster: Michael Jordan. LeBron James had never won a ring without having at least TWO hall of Famers on his team! Meaning everytime he won a ring, at least 60 percent of the starters were Hall of Famers. And with Miami there were FOUR hall of famers and they didnt break .500!!!! They went 2-2 in the finals with the Heat. That was supposed to be the greatest team ever assembled and at minimum to win 5 championships. Any historian would tell you that Heat team. That run was an epic fail. Epic fail. Jordan goes 6-0 and that Heat team with 3 of the Olympic starters go 2-2?

That statement is so not true. That's exactly what people use when they make these claims for the GOAT. Romanticism plays a very small part because nostalgia. But when you objectively look at what these players have done and try to tier them off there is data to back up a "GOAT" type of player. Until someone does or exceeds what MJ has done in modern basketball he will be considered the greatest of all time for the foreseeable future. Jordan was the greatest of his era and all eras. He did all of this in a league that didn't cater to his style of play.

Before his injury he was ranked 3rd in MVP predictions. And he lifted that team from the 2nd worst to the BEST defensive ranking in the NBA (all before that injury)... how's that for a 'what if?'

About time somebody put some respect on Jordan’s tenure with the wizards
MJ had broken his ribs before his his first year with the wizards. Also, 4 months into the season he had a knee clash with one of his teammates during a game which took whatever was left in his knees.
Prior to that he was actually improving and started to average 26/27 points and rising as Chris showed in January. I would've loved to see MJ actually healthy at 40. He would've done even better than just being an all star.

As a huge fan of MJ I was really glad he came back because I got to watch MJ twice when the Wizards played against the Suns. In 2002, we witnessed the last game winner of his career when he hit a game winner from the right of the court over Shawn Marion!! That was unreal!!

Even though Mj played 2 seasons for the Washington Wizards he wasn't as athletic but he still scored pretty good for his age and most Basketball fans was just happy too see Jordan still play plus some young players got a chance too cook him on the court 😄.
This is revisionist history. What really happened with Wizards MJ was that he’d score 28 one night but 15 the following night. He was capable of turning back the clock but it was very inconsistent.

A 39 year old Jordan had a team that previously won 19 games on pace to win 42 games. That's incredible. They were in the playoff hunt before he tore his meniscus. MJ was such a warrior that he played an additional i believe 12 games with the injury. His numbers plummeted in those games, but he tried to tough it out. He was averaging 25ppg 5rebs and 5ast before he got injured.

Born and raised in DC. Even tho it was old Mike we were so happy to see him play, fun times in the city . He was our best player at the age of 39 and 40. Had a chance to see him both years. Had he not got hurt his first year, he would’ve lead the Wizards in the playoffs.

I too never went to a Jordan game when he was on the Bulls. But, I was at one of the ones where he got over 40pts in Washington. It was surreal seeing him in a Wizard's uniform. It's something Ill never forget.

As a DMV native, Jordan playing for the Wizards is STILL the biggest thing that's happened to the franchise since the (was it 1977?) Wes Unseld lead championship. That Jordan Bullets throwback jersey is legendary.
I’m glad somebody is finally saying this. He was still good with the wizards and without that knee injury they would’ve at least been 5th seed in the playoffs and would’ve been dangerous. They had a rocky start but when they picked up steam it was over with for teams
