    I bought this watch last year from an AD and while I was there I got on the list for a no date submariner expecting to wait at least 2 years. Within 6 months though I got the call and it caught me off guard but I had to buy the sub. After a few weeks I realised that as an engineer the submariner suited me far better. Although the explorer is a beautiful watch I found the bezel scratches up more than I’d like and it looks a bit too dressy at times. I don’t know what it is but the submariner just feels like a more solid watch and it also has the glide-lock bracelet. I ended up selling my explorer and now I wear my submariner every day.

I've still got my Sub but hardly wear it - I actually prefer my BB58. Submariners are also extremely common.

    The Exp-1 is the bargain in Rolex’s Sports lineup. Arguably a candidate for best all around one watch collection. Didn’t Hillary have his watch in his pocket? Tenzing was dutifully wearing his. In my mind it will always be Rolex 1sr to top of the world. Sorry Smithee’s

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z Před 4 lety +3

      Correct. Obviously the Explorer has been through numerous versions and reference # changes since 1953, at least a dozen by my count. In 1953 the Explorer name had not even been copyrighted yet by Rolex because of the usual red tape at the copyright office. The Hunt expedition were issued the 1953 Pre production Ref 6098. This was what Hillary was carrying in his pocket. Tenzing has stated repeatedly he was wearing his Rolex when he summited. The debate rages as to who was exactly first to the top. The first 3/6/9 quarter Arabic dial Pre-Explorer, (sans the Explorer name) was released by Rolex same year, 1953. Ref 6298. These were simply renumbered 6098s. All these watches had dauphine handsets. I had an original 6298 semi bubble back inherited from my father.

      Actually it seems both Hilary and norgay were wearing smiths at the summit, NOT a Rolex

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z Před 2 lety +1

      The Smith’s watch proponents surely want you to believe that Hillary and Tenzing were wearing Smiths watches. I’ve done a ton of research into exactly what brand watches they were wearing when they summited. My conclusion is there is no definitive smoking gun only circumstantial evidence, but that evidence heavily points to both men wearing Rolex when they reached the top. What we know for sure is both Rolex Oyster Perpetuals and Smiths Deluxe manual wind watches were issued to the 13 full members (less Tenzing). Tenzing was wearing either his Gold Datejust given to him by Rolex for his participation in the 1952 Swiss expedition or a Oyster Perpetual lent to him by Raymond Lambert of the 1952 Swiss climbing team that nearly succeeded the prior year. Interviews with both Tenzing’s family and Raymond Lambert’s family, all stated he was wearing one or the other. Period Photos from the Royal Geographical societies archives show dozens of photos of both Tenzing and Hillary wearing Rolex OPs during and directly after the climb. Go back and study the photos. You can plainly see that the Rolex OP is easily discernible from the Smith’s Deluxe worn by various team members. The Rolex ref #6098 Ovettone (the Big Egg) is 35.5mm diameter case size by a whopping 13.7mm thick. The Smith’s Deluxe is only 33.5mm diameter case and a slim 10mm thick. This difference is plainly visible, especially in the photos of team members wearing both watches. The famous photos of Hillary and Tenzing taken at the high attitude camp #8 just prior to them departing to establish the final camp #9 clearly shows both climbers wearing the larger Rolex OP. A popular story pushed by the Smith’s proponents is that Hillary left his Rolex at BaseCamp which is simply not true. As for Tenzing? He was never issued a Smith’s or Rolex since he was never considered a full team member. The invoices sent to the Royal Geographical Society from both Rolex and Smith’s show only 13 watches. So where did Tenzing get the watch he was wearing? The two most plausible answers is he was wearing a Rolex OP lent to him by Swiss Climber Raymond Lambert or his gold Datejust when he summited. Tenzing visited his good friend Raymond in Switzerland just prior to joining the 1953 British expedition. Lambert’s widow and son both stated that Raymond implored/insisted that Tenzing wear a Rolex and very likely lent him his personal Rolex OP that was given to him by Rolex for his participation in the nearly successful 1952 Swiss expedition to Everest. Both of Tenzing’s sons have stated that Tenzing was actually wearing his gold Datejust when he summited. He’d worn a big fat cased silver watch all during the climb but possibly switched to his gold DJ just prior to summiting? We may never know for sure since there is no direct concrete evidence like a photo taken at the summit that clearly show the watches. As a side note. Both Hillary and Tenzing were lifelong fans and representatives for Rolex. The estates of both men included Rolex watches not Smith’s. In fact Hillary owned 6 Rolex at the time of his death. His famous Rolex ref #6098 that he wore during the successful 1953 expedition is on display at the Beyers watch museum in Switzerland along with the mailing documentation that shows the watch was sent by Hillary from New Zealand to Rolex in 1953 for analysis and subsequently put on display at the Beyers watch museum shortly afterwards. No less that 7 of the 13 Rolex OPs worn by various team members have turned up in auctions or during research by watch sleuths. There’s allot more to this story than meets the eye. I’m working on a YT video that will present the arguments for Rolex vs Smiths in a fair light. It’s taking much longer then I figured but hope to have it completed in the not to distant future. Till then I encourage people to do their own research and not believe just one side of the argument or the other.

      Get the khaki and save yourself almost 5k, I've got a khaki and wanted an explorer, once I saw it in person and tried it on I was a bit disappointed. I have had an op 36mm before and I think that's a better looking watch than the explorer.

      @@danielf.1237 I have both the 36mm and 39mm. You either wear the girly but classy 36mm or the slightly bigger bloated, ugly 39mm. Your choice. Theres a reason the 36mm fetches more money on the used market.

      I too have owned both. Sold the 39 and still wear the 36 daily. IMO the 39 was too large and disproprtioned for my 16cm wrist. My late 08 version of the 36 is basically the same watch as the newer 39 when it comes to the case and movement. The poor quality lighter bracelet and clasp is a different matter. As they are a strap monster l find that l rarely wear it on its original metal bracelet.
      I guess that many 36 owners feel the same. Due to demand its true that they are selling for more than the 39. There might be a limited supply for a new 39 but theres zero supply for a new 36 and the good quality ones are getting harder to get
      Here are some interesting stats on both that most don't know. The 39 is actually 39.8mm so almost 40. The 36 is actually 35mm. The 36 glass has the same diameter as a 40mm submariner. The glass/face on the 39 is much larger. It could be the same as the explorer 2 but l haven't had the opertunity to measure. Dont trust what Rolex writes in their brochures.

      I doubt it, might make it more available as lots of people will have less expendable income but there will always be people waiting to clean up.
      I think there will be great deals on other watches but Rolex are an anomaly and I doubt they will reduce drastically (although considering how inflated they are now it may seem like they do). Also if the Rolex factory is still stopped making them there could be an even bigger scarcity. Time will tell I guess

      Not likely to happen. The people who can afford a Rolex weren't the ones hit hardest by COVID. If anything, decreased supply could make them even more expensive...
