  • Upgrading my Mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro in 2019 | 250GB SSD, 16GB DDR3 (1066MHz) RAM Memory, New Battery, Hard Drive Caddy Tray
    This is a video for my Student Blog while studying my Graphic Communication FdA. I'm currently running an old MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), and it is beginning to struggle with Adobe InDesign... With the sky-high prices of MacBook Pros in 2019 and the thermal throttling issues, I thought I would experiment with an upgrade.
    Apple claims you can not upgrade the RAM Memory beyond 8GBs, but you can! Make sure the RAM speed matches what the machine came with. In this case, it's 1066MHz!!!
    I hope this helps explain how an upgrade is done physically. If you would like to know more on the installation process and creating a bootable USB, then please refer to the videos linked below :)
    **UPDATE**
    The cheap battery I used failed after a few months... Also, I found patching Mojave to be a little annoying with regards to update messages. Next time I'll just stick with the official macOS.

    Also OWC RAM works very well. I used a Seagate 1TB SSHD instead because the controller is only SATA2 and is a perfect combination of speed and disk space

    Tremendous video, thank you. I still running my Macbook mid-2010 with the original specs, seeing this video was proof positive I need to get a proper overhaul. Made all the upgrades [save for replacing the CD drive, which I like having] and the result was better than I could have imagined. Couldn't recommend making the upgrades more to 2010 users. Will do the Mojave upgrade in 2021 when the High Sierra OS is no longer supported. Just a quick question, how do you find Mojave without upgrading your Graphics Card? Does it still run ok?

    • @MickyWeir
      @MickyWeir  Před 4 lety +2

      It runs pretty well. There are cons however. It does keep trying to update, and if you do, you will need to re-patch.
      So I'd recommend from this point doing the hardware upgrades, but sticking with apples official updates and not the patching tool. So that means sticking with High Sierra :)

      @@MickyWeir : Thank you mate, will do. As an aside, I really wish I'd done a video to show my login in speed, then page to page speed to compare the 2010 specs vs what it is now. The videos I see online don't do justice to the total difference between 250gbHD/4gbRAM & 500gbSSD/16gbRAM....it is so different that it borders on a joke. haha. Anyway, thanks again, this video was the inspiration to get it upgraded and I'm glad I did! Cheers.

    I have the Mid 2010 Macbook Pro with High Sierra and it locks up when i install 8G of RAM. I have the correct 1066 speed and i bought it new. If i only put in one 4G stick it works fine (slow). If i add in the 2nd stick it will boot up faster and it runs for a few minutes and then locks up. Any ideas?
    Thank you for sharing your work.

  • @hispaaniasseoppimajajalgpa9637

    Great video! You didn't clean it at all? also the thermal paste it was in need to be done? Mine is 1067mhz so I need to get RAM and SSD 1067mhz correct?

    • @MickyWeir
      @MickyWeir  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi. Thanks for the comment... I had mentioned both cleaning and thermal paste in the video but they didn't make the edit and were cut out. A great tip to clean dust from the board is to use a new paintbrush and to simply brush it off :D
      You can replace the thermal paste as it will dry up over time and may not be conducting the heat away from the CPU as well as when brand new, but that is a more advanced task. I wasn't ready to try that just yet.
      If your RAM is 1067mhz on screen it will physically be 1066mhz. Have a look at the RAM itself to get a match. An SSD is recommended for greater speed than a mechanical HDD cannot achieve.
      The parts I use are listed in the description. Of course, this video is for a 13" MacBook Pro Mid 2010 7,1... If you are running a newer MacBook Pro your parts will be different.

    Thanks for this! I have a Macbook Pro 15-inch mid 2010. Will this work for my model as well? I read on the seller's Amazon Canada page that it only works for Macbook Pro 13-inch. But in the FAQ section, someone wrote that as long as it's with Core 2 Duo processors with the i5 or i7 (mine is i5), it should work.
    Do you know which one is true? Thank you!

    My MacBook Pro is mid-2012, with a 2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 microprocessor. No way to upgrade this with a faster microprocessor, right? Yeah, it's faster. The main reason for upgrading was just to keep it alive, and make sure it was capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud. Which it could :) I would say it's probably a short term fix. You should really buy new Apple gear after about 5 years in my opinion.
