How I Chopped My Wing | Crash Analysis

  • I can't believe this happened. As I went to launch, I chopped my wing! This video breaks down what I think happened. If you've got any input please leave it in the comment section below!
    I packaged the wing up straight after this happened ready to be shipped off to The Loft for repair. Most repair and servicing companies will quote about 3 weeks especially since the corona virus is still affecting us all. Hopefully, I'll have my wing back before we head off to PMC Summer Fly In as this year it'll be in Cornwall!
    Thank you to Mike Chilvers for loaning me a wing whilst mine is being repaired! If you're interested in getting trained to fly a paramotor head over to www.ufly4fun.com/

    Some good self analysis there Dan. We all make mistakes and being honest and learning from them is how we become better pilots. The Swiss Cheese model is a great analogy for this, sometimes all the holes line up, its happened to me. Keep flying safe.

      Thanks Giles, I always aim to better myself and share my learnings with others so they too can avoid things like this. It's inevitable that something will go wrong eventually but this is one of those very harsh lessons considering a decent repair bill and 3 weeks without your own glider.

    This is a pricey way to learn and we all have a story like this , every launch has its own set of challenges to think about , just the one thing can put you way off a good launch , the good thing is , you know what put you in a not so good place on the launch , your analysis is about right but i think you was in a hurry and put your self under to much pressure , i did this to my self in the early days but now i will not compromise i step back and have a look at it all again in my brain . Great video dan stay safe mate

    @bleeder228 Před 4 lety +2

    Based on watching your friend launch from behind your position, the conditions seems well within a reasonable range. The objects that you were concerned about producing rotor were fairly low and not particularly large, I doubt they did anything to screw up your launch.
    What I did see was a BIG hesitation and some fairly poor glider control. My advice, keep kiting and working on your form. Stop hesitating and just commit, always hold enough brake to stay "in contact" with the wing. You should always be able to feel some pull from that glider.
    Crappy air conditions are always the go-to excuse and are almost never the issue. I really urge you to consider that you simply made some mistakes and lost control. I assure you that better control comes with a lot of practice and repetition. You will improve over time and this probably won't happen to you, ever again, with a couple more years of experience.
    Your idea of giving yourself more room is spot on. The rest is probably not from what I can see.

    @MrL22 Před 4 lety +1

    Great video Dan. I think there may have been a technique to minimising the chance of this happening. Looked to me like there was quite a bit of wind so as soon as you turn you could have applied a bit of brake all the way through launch to stop the wing overshooting you. So straight after you turn, a bit of brake, lean back, power and let the engine push you to the sky. Similar to how you would execute a one-step launch, but not as aggressive.

    • @DanielJonesParamotor
      @DanielJonesParamotor  Před 4 lety +1

      Richard Leishman yea man that’s what I was going for and the proper technique to launch but it was the being picked off my feet that caught me out. I had to then recover from that moving sideways, I should have held the brakes when I got picked up rather than letting my hands up to come back down. 🙃

    Hi Dan, good to self analyse, you picked up on quite a few points, however an important one missed. Trim out is normally used in v light winds to help the wing inflate and come overhead more easily. If you were doing that in stronger winds, it was too strong to launch for your experience, or you should have waited for a lull or calm patch and launched on neutral. 2nd thing is, carry some repair tape. That hole looked easily repairable with rip stop tape and you would have been back in the air in 15 mins unless there was more damage that i didn't see on the video.

  • @clippedwing-bensmith1614

    That's a shame mate, well done for sharing though. You were a lot calmer that I would be with a hole in my wing!
