    Considering its popularity, how did they manage to only make 20 episodes (excluding later 'specials'), in dribs & drabs over 13 years?? Isn't that barely 1 season's worth for most sitcoms?

    • @DRAG0NSPIRIT10
      @DRAG0NSPIRIT10 Před rokem

      Not for a lot of the British sitcoms, a lot of them only did 6 episodes per series. Young Ones only ever did 12 episodes total over 2 series. Black Book was 18 eps over 3 series and IT Crowd was 24 eps not including the special (and that was also 6 episodes per season).

    • @pbasswil
      @pbasswil Před rokem

      @@DRAG0NSPIRIT10 Huh, I wonder what factors made this the norm? I mean, Brits have historically watched TV just as much as North Americans, haven't they? - if they produced more, the public would greedily devour it, right? We know they have the writing & production talent... On the other hand, count up all the TV episodes Martin Clunes has been in over his career... Seinfeld et al would be jealous.

    • @DRAG0NSPIRIT10
      @DRAG0NSPIRIT10 Před rokem

      @@pbasswil I believe part of the reasons why a lot of our sitcoms are shorter is we had smaller groups writing them compared to US ones. A lot of the older series had like 1 or 2 people writing them so so it takes longer for each episode to be done. One sitcom Dinnerladies was written entirely by Victoria Wood (who also played the main character), that show was 16 episodes total (6 for the first series and 10 for the 2nd but she did have a harder time writing the 2nd one).
      But there are some that managed to go for a long time even with a smaller writing crew. Dad's Army was written by two guys and ran for 9 series and totaled 80 episodes including a couple of specials and the lost episodes. It also started in 1968 and ended in 1977 so it did really well to get as much as it did.

    Emma Chambers was the real star of this show, all of the others were really good but Dawn French always overplays her part and makes it unbelievable, she is good in comedy sketches but acting a part, no way. I only ever watched this because of Emma and Roger Lloyd Pack.

    • @DD-wd7ku
      @DD-wd7ku Před 2 lety +4

      Wasn't 'overplaying' the part of the vicar intentional to create an unbelievable vicar? Each of the characters were brilliantly portrayed by their respective actors. Geraldine and Alice complimented each other perfectly.

    • @honestchris7472
      @honestchris7472 Před 2 lety

      @@DD-wd7ku I disagree, the part of the vicar was played to stupid levels, like the one with the chocolate fountain when she put her head in the chocolate but first she did that silly nodding thing and said "I`m going in" it was embarrassingly ridiculous and when she had a chocolate binge, she made it look like she ate a hundred of them. When she was eating all of the Christmas dinners, forcing her mouth open and trying to push in a brussell sprout, just not believable at all. The reason that the end gags with Alice always worked was because eof the brilliance of Emma Chambers making it work, certainly not because Dawn French was there.

      @@honestchris7472 maybe you just missed the whole point of the show. It was comedy! Some slapstick, some serious and a story behind it all. I'm quite sure that Dawn French would have given a lot of thought to how the part of the vicar was to be played. The vicar's slapstick character enhanced the portrayal of the other characters, serious but funny, to provide a good balance of excellent comedy. The success of the show, even today, is 'testament' to that.

    • @honestchris7472
      @honestchris7472 Před 2 lety

      @@DD-wd7ku no, I did not miss the point of the show, it was a comedy but certainly not slapstick. It was about a normal village that had a woman as a vicar and how that was greeted by the people and it was funny but Geraldine Granger started out as very sensible, pointing out that she had breasts and the battle with David Houghton was a serious thing about the show ant it slowly changed to her being accepted. Dawn French ruined it with the stupid extremely unlikely things that she did, every other character played their part brilliantly, it was a comedy but not a silly comedy with slapstick. Even the bit at the end with Alice had the vicar being serious and the dimwit Alice being a bit thick and as I said, Emma Chambers was the real star and I watched it just for the end scenes, I was very happy with the rest of the cast because although what they had in dialogue was sometimes unlikely, it was not so ridiculous to be unbelievable like a vicar shoving her head into a chocolate fountain.
