  • Moving to Spain is absolutely an amazing experience and one I don’t regret at all. But it doesn’t come without it’s difficulties. So here I come with the truth about moving to Spain.
When I thought of moving to Spain, I thoughth of living by the beach, enjoying the hot weather and perhaps enjoying a bit of paella and sangria. I can guarantee you I was not thinking about paperwork in the slightest!!
I didn’t know much about immigration but I knew it wasn’t going to be one of the easiest experiences of my life. However, I do not think I was prepared for the shambles that was to take place.
The bureaucracy in Spain isn’t the best… and is actually disorganised to a point that it is no longer logical! It begs the question - should you get a lawyer rather than dealing with the mess itself?
Stay tuned for my experience of moving abroad to Spain!

Just a note about the bureaucracy:
A visa you get before arrival and the residency process (a TIE/ NIE) you get once you arrive
    NIE - Foreigners number
    TIE - Foreigners card
Padrón - a certificate provided by your town hall for proof of your address
These 3 mentioned above are the main appointments I had to go to

It’s much easier to apply for NIE from home through your nearest consulate or embassy before you move. I had to wait a while for my appointment but it was easy, the consulate staff all speaks English (or your local language) and I had my NIE a week after my appointment

Thank you for your insight! For those that apply that way - how long would you recommend applying for a NIE before moving?

@@aimeeweekestravels They say it takes 3 weeks normally, so a month should give you plenty of time.

Hi Aimée, Thank you for your video. I am happy to hear that it worked out for you. I am in the process... well, my application was archived by the Valencia immigration office. I have a lawyer and we had a court date for the 26th of January 2023; however, there is an indefinite strike in the courts that started on the 24th of Jan. 2023. Therefore, my residency is in limbo. I started this process 18 months ago. I am married to an EU citizen, but getting my residency is still a massive headache.

madrid barcelona lisbon? which one is best for living?

That’s tricky to say as I have only lived in one but travelled the rest and believe they all have their own pros and cons of living there. If you plan on working there I would say Madrid but if you want more of a relaxed lifestyle perhaps Lisbon!

is a 10 yr old DUI conviction a problem? No issues before or after but an issue nonetheless. Hoping to move to Cantabria.

I am not too sure on that one tbh but it is worth asking for professional advice so they can point you in the right direction! Good luck on the move to Cantabria!
