Hey Ben! Just wanna say that I have taken up content creation as well, and though I'm just now starting, gotta say it's a blast! I definitely agree with everything you've said here, and I hopefully will soon find a unique style of videos as well! 😂 Also just so you know, you're the one who inspired me to take the plunge and try it out! Heck, even if no one watches my videos, I like making them! :D

That's what literally kept me around and subscribed was your attitude and positivity. Plus you enthusiasm commentating your replays is enjoyable and sometimes make me laugh. This is kind of weird but your thumbnail selection attracts me for some reason idk. Anyways, great video, I can pass on info to my teenage son who is wanting to be a "CZcamsr", I don't think he realizes it's 20% fun playing games to get content and 80% editing his gameplay (I call it "work") but he's never going to know unless I support him and he finds out. Who knows maybe his calling isn't playing games but he'll enjoy video editing and that's also a career opportunity in itself for his age.

You know I am one of the guys you talk about. I am thinking to open a sim racing channel. Since very long time. I also did some broadcast in the past for some community championships and I enjoyed them a lot. But I don't know why I can't start. Maybe because I have still not clear the direction I want to follow. But you are really right on one thing: maybe I should just begin, and THEN the direction I will have to follow will show by itself maybe. Or maybe not. But if I never try... One day I will start, this video made me think a lot though. And I thank you for that.

    Great video Ben.
I've been doing sim racing videos for just over a year now and I agree with everything you said.
I find it very rewarding when I receive a thunbs up, comment or sub, but there are highs and lows and sometimes I wonder if it all worth the effort involved.
That said I am seeing steady growth and a little community growing which makes me very proud that a dozy old Yorkshire bloke has managed to achieve something worthwhile after retirement from work.

Hey Doug - great work buddy! I’ve tuned in to a few of your league race videos, Fuji most recently I think. For me one of the best things about sim racing is how many generations are all involved at the same time and all on a pretty even playing field too.
I think you’re right about the satisfaction from creating the content and community - in a way to stick it out on YT you need that too, as well as enjoying the racing!
Thanks for watching and hope to see you on track one day!

Commenting a year after the video is published might make no sense but I need to say that I don't follow many simracing channels and yours is one of them for two reasons. First, your narrative is great and you could probably comment on fishing videos and make them interesting. Second is your to the point format. As for new creator's go ahead an do it, but I cannot stress enough do your research on what works for sim racing and you. Learn basic editing along with title & thumbnails, plan every video like a picture story first. Watch other channels if you click off from a video within 30 seconds make yours better ! Some big YT's do race videos but I don't watch them, Le Broca has nailed it !!

Onya mate. Thanks for sharing the steps you took/take to get where you are.
I've tried commentary and I've tried the head in the corner videos but neither worked for me.
I need to find a way to make content where I don't have to do either of those, because CTA and retention on those videos was worst of all.
I think some people have it, and some don't. I don't, so I'm always looking for a style where I can be successful without having to be in video/audio at all, so I don't scare people away.

My biggest advice is definitely perseverance! CZcams comes in waves, you will have low periods, but they will turn into super high periods, and then settle back down to low periods, and the cycle repeats, if your in a rut, see if there is something about your content you can change. And just keep posting! You will make it through! Great video Ben 😊

Great video and very helpful. I have created content for about a year now and find it really difficult to gain new viewers. It feels like attention spans are so short that viewers lose interest pretty quick with my content. I suspect a large part of it is not that I record the entire race, but that my content doesn’t include any commentary beyond the intro. I feel as though I create something unique with the multicam POV , and that generally people enjoy it, but I really don’t get much feedback either negative or positive. Your video definitely helps to encourage creators and to not get stuck in despair.

    • @Ben_LaBroca
      @Ben_LaBroca  Před rokem +1

Hey Rick buddy - it can definitely be tough going. For what it’s worth viewers wise I think I benefitted big time from starting in a sim like RaceRoom that was going through growth but was also under served on YT. I didn’t plan it that way it just happened, and it got me momentum. Also - and everyone’s different - but my big sources of views tend not to be race videos but guides and other stuff. Hope that’s helpful mate and the main thing is you enjoy doing what you do 💪

Very good video!! I have around the same time doing YT of simracing as you but I haven't cracked the formula yet (180 subs.) I am not sure if I suck at making videos, my bad driving is not appealing (I know that I suck at driving) or that I decided to stick to Spanish. So probably my niche (people that like videos of bad sim racing in Spanish with a dull guy) is to small ... :) Anyways, doing the videos has making me taking sim racing a bit more serious and practice a bit more, also being super clean and fair (you do not want to appear in camera ramming people off the track, -some deserve it sometimes though ...)

It's not worth worrying about the channel being popular, because it almost only depends on youtube's algorithm... I watch a lot of simracing videos, sometimes I see really good videos with only 10-20 views and really bad ones with 10.000+ views...
In my opinion the most important thing is that you enjoy the time you spend making your videos, and the audience either comes or they don't. For example, I started making videos for a couple of friends a few years ago, with only 30-40 views/video for a long time, then one of my videos was picked up by the algorithm, and since then my channel has reached 1.5 million views. Despite that, I will never be a content creator, I still make my videos for entertaining that few friends, but of course it's a good thing if they entertain other people as well. But we must not forget that for most of us this is not a job, but a hobby. As soon as I feel that it is no longer fun for me to make videos, I will stop making them.
So I think the most important thing, as with any other hobby: ENJOY IT! :)

I'm not a youtuber, i'm just studying the ecosystem. Making a small channel may be easy. Unless you're a rich boy doing it for fun making a big channel that last for years and also worth the investment is harder. Most of the succesful youtubers are full time simers. Creating sim racing content is time consuming and money consuming. Imho the first most important thing to have is driving skill. It needs years to master. Not obligatory being an alien or a pro driver but some decent laptime and racecraft. Playing and recording videos is just a logistic challenge. In general people like watching videos that impress and inspire them. The second most important thing is the ability to talk an make engaging commentaries with your videos. There are some CZcamsrs here that use expensive rigs bragging to attract people in the other side there are some the skilled guy with good skills and nice commentary that get more views with cheaper rigs. Also biggest simtubers are people who master the art of being cash, i mean they don't hesitate to criticise or praise the sim they are playing. Sim racing is cool but many studio often do things that the community don't like so the community need to rise voice. Criticism and even controversy made the sim racing genre better.

Anyone interested in a ‘creator cup’ community league? It could be a place for prospective ppl like this video is focused on, meet regularly, race cleanly, I can imagine voice chat banter n more…thoughts? 😮

I want to do it...I have all the gear to do it...but I just feel like I need to become a much better driver first...unless there is a market for laughing at just how bad I am....

You mentioned a mid grade computer set up, What is your setup? My setup is over 5 years old and I am interested in upgrading my GPU my cpu is fine for me at 4.7 ghz but my gtx 1080 is starting to show its age in racing sims and I have upgraded my race setup to a Moza r5 and an inexpensive full cockpit and a 32 inch curved screen. I am getting more serious about racing and want to have higher resolution and FPS.

You could not have said this any better. You explain it all so well, this is a little diamond of a video. Will watch it back in those needed moments. Thanks Ben, sorry I didn’t say so when I first saw this, been meaning too for a while now.
