- I upgraded the avionics in 76Q, I replaced the attitude indicator and directional gyro with AV-30's and give a review after flying with them for a bit. Spoiler, the DG needs help.
@Brotallion for the hat!
Hey just stumbled on your videos. I’m in El Paso as well, just getting started with obtaining a PPL. Looking at Mooneys to hopefully purchase one next year! Seems like you enjoy yours!
Welcome to El Paso! Let me know if you need help with your flight training or anything Aviation. Me and a few others been working hard for a few years to build the aviation community out here. We just stood up an EAA chapter here (Chapter 125) and we in general look for any excuse to get together to talk airplanes!
They have a certified magnetometer now!
DG precession is horrible on AV30 c. Have you installed the remote mag? Might help.
I haven’t. I have since installed a gps and slaved the AV -30 to it. However, there is gps lag, so I need to stop being cheap and install the mag
I have AV-30s with a Garmin 540W and the GPS course is amazing. My flights are sharp and straight even with winds. For the airspeed, I also had to reduce the indicated to match the ASI, by about 6kt. I want them to match at Vg when the wing is most efficient, and so that I don't think I am faster than what I really am.
What software version do you have? It's up to 2.1.5 to help with the precession, though I am also waiting for the remote magnetometer to be certified. Nice plane!
Does your Mooney/Brittain autopilot still work now that the uAvionix are installed?
I initially left the vacuum pump in for this reason. But I ended up getting a vacuum leak on my flight home due to turbulence. My initial test flights showed low vacuum and I had to fight the autopilot so I pulled the pump disabling the autopilot all together thinking it was the AV-30’s causing the leak. During the annual (install was in February and the annual was in November) I found the source of the leak, the vacuum operated step, rubber boot had completely ripped and was lying on the floor. What I think is that moderate occasional severe I hit cause it to tear. In the end, Im not sure the autopilot would work or not because I never got an accurate test.
Has your mechanical airspeed indicator been tested for a pitot static test. It's reading below the white arc in a stall, perhaps the av30c could be more accurate. How's the DG precession issue that's been going around affecting you?(edit yep magnetometer def needed)
I took her to do a full ifr pitot static test a few months ago. I had a static leak that got fixed. Both the main airspeed indicator and the av30 were within tolerance. On the DG side, I’ve heard, rumors only, that the metal cockpit of a Mooney really doesn’t help it at all. I’m not sure how true that is.
