SINGLEHANDED MAN OVERBOARD SELF RESCUE DRILL: CLIMB OUT OF THE WATER USING MECHANICAL AIDS

  • In this video, I complete a Singlehanded Man Overboard self-rescue drill while at anchor to test and learn the use of mechanical aids to climb back aboard. I use two mechanical ascenders, climber's nylon ladders and a GriGri. The mechanical advantage was good, but there were challenges with the gear getting past the gunwale and the steel cable lifeline. I may make a few changes to this and post learnings and developments.

    What daunting challenge. I can’t even imagine falling overboard if you are out of shape.

      It does take a base level of fitness to climb back in. And, as a guy late in my fifth decade, the old "war horse" has other challenges beyond garden variety fitness!

    If the boat is doing over 2-3 knots, good luck getting back.

      Well said. I am working on a potential solution for that .

      @@respecttherisk2022 Yep, it's a terrible prospect. You need some way that the auto pilot can trigger to lay a hull.
